Your favorite food group?

Grains: rice, wheat, oats, cornmeal, pasta, etc.

Vegetables: greens, squash, corn, peas, root vegetables, peppers, etc.

Fruits: apples, berries, citrus, melons, peaches, grapes, etc.

Dairy: milk, cheese, yogurt, etc.

Proteins: beef, poultry, pork, fish, eggs, beans, seeds, nuts, etc.

If you could only eat one for the rest of your life, which would it be (assume you can get all the nutrition you need from just this one group, even though you obviously can’t, that being the entire purpose of having food groups, but we’re going to ignore that)?

I’m anticipating there’s going to be a lot of hairsplitting about what exactly qualifies as a fruit or vegetable, as many of these things are technically one thing but in practice are seen as the other, like tomatoes, squashes, and eggplants, so for the poll I’m just going to combine fruits and vegetables. So there!

Also, note that corn is the the fruits/vegetables, but cornmeal is with the grains.

Also, I didn’t think the “Oil group” was going to be particularly relevant here (I like butter as much as anyone but I’d never consider eating nothing but butter and washing it down with peanut oil), so it’s not included. Sorry.

I’d say fruit because it is usually sweet and I have a sweet tooth.

Does beer go into the ‘grains’* group?

*What’s a zombie’s favourite food group?

I chose grains (PASTA!!), but then I realized I’d need to borrow from some other food groups for my sauces…

Maybe I can just have buttered noodles with some spices thrown in, considering they aren’t really included in any other category.

It’s liquid bread, isn’t it?

I went with grains (beer notwithstanding), because I could eat nothing but bread and pasta for the rest of my life…which admittedly might be rather short if I eat nothing but bread and pasta, but at least I’d die with a full stomach

It’s kind of like asking who your favourite kid, or parent is; they’re all good and there’s no real answer for me.

I suppose if I had to pick one, I’d go with proteins. I might get by on chicken wings and steak. Wait, which group does hot sauce fall into?

I went with dairy because I would die without cheese. (I am from Wisconsin)

I chose protiens because I think you’d get the most variety there. Beef today, fish tomorrow, eggs for breakfast, nuts for snacks, and so forth. It wouldn’t get as boring as an all-veggie or all-grain diet.

But, oh man, would I miss my cheese.

Chocolate.

Where is the chocolate food group? Cacao is a fruit, probably. And there is the sugar beet.

Fruits and vegetables.

My post exactly (other than that Wisconsin thing).
mmm

It has to be fruits-and-vegetables as the most diverse group yielding the most combinations within itself.

Plant foods can be rendered into roughly bread-like stuff and meat-like stuff and cheese-like stuff… and, critically, condiments. Hot sauce, for example, is mainly fruit, grape wine vinegar and peppers.

I voted proteins, as I’m practically a carnivore, but it was a very, very close race with dairy, as I just LOVE cheese and ice cream. Can you tell I’m not the skinniest person in the world?

Tofu is a vegetable, maybe the fruits/vegetables group, I could make a kind of pasta out of firm tofu and put spaghetti sauce on it…soy ‘parmesan’ cheese…tofu ‘cheesecake’ with berries…tofu ‘egg salad’…oh hell, just bring me a bushel of nice sweet corn and a watermelon in the summer…

I voted grains because they’re the main component of what I call the *salty crunchy *food group.

I’ve never understood the confusion. Nobody ever asks “Is a carrot a root or a vegetable?”, or “Is lettuce a leaf or a vegetable?”, so why do they ask “Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable?”? It’s the same question.

But speaking of tomatoes, those aren’t found in any of the other groups, so I’ll have to take the vegetable group. Plus, there’s a lot more variety available in vegetables than in anything else. I really can’t figure how Wheelz sees more variety in meats, unless he’s just never had vegetables that didn’t have all the good stuff tortured out of them.

Grains. I could live on bread alone.

Vegetables is a supercategory comprised of roots, bulbs, tubers, sprouts, stems, leaves and buds.

We might say the difference from fruits is in the relationship between the plant and the eater. Fruits are offered for the eating; vegetables require a little more imagination and more work on the human side.

I picked fruit and veggies supergroup. I normally say i am a carnivore, but I am an omnivore, I love lots of different fruits and veggies, and am somewhat willing to say fruit and veggie because I absolutely adore stuff like fresh spinach, artichokes, asparagus, tofu, apples, pears, bananas.

I would miss rice, and butter and cheese, and a steak or lobster, and fresh baked bread but I could find enough to make me happy in the fruit and veggie category.

I am a carnivore through and through. Gimme meat!

Plus, you gave me punkin seeds and nuts to snack on. I am happy.
