Your favorite funny commercials

Everybody probably remembers the “I can’t believe I ate the whole thing!” Alka-Seltzer commercial from the late Sixties (as long as they’re old enough!); and there was a somewhat inept announcer touting the “New Arrid Arrid Arrid X-X” deodorant (a voice-over kept correcting him with “DOUBLE-X!”).
Anyone else remember (even unintentionally?) funny commercials?

Off the top of my head I remember the car advert from a few years ago where the little kid is always wearing the Darth Vader mask and his dad tricks him into thinking he made the headlights turn on by using the force.

Try hearing It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year without thinking of the Staples commercial.

Best ad campaign ever.

I’ve fallen! And I can’t get up!

That always reminds me of a Dennis the Menace cartoon. He is “running away from home” again; to his surprised parents he says, “You’re always talking about the ‘good old days,’ when I wasn’t here. Well, ENJOY yourselves!”

A beauty! A true delight!

GEICO had a whole series of real winners. I loved the cave-man ads. (Too bad the spin-off TV show didn’t work out, but even so, that a show was even tried that was a spin-off from an ad is remarkable!) I also like the Gecko (but preferred him before he took on the doofus pseudo-Brit/pseudo-Australian accent.) Even their “Maybe it’s something in the water” ad was clever and funny.

In the UK, the Specsavers ads usually come up with something amusing:

Among my favorites is a Fed-Ex commercial that I believe was first aired during a Superbowl.

A caveman ties a stick to the leg of a pterodactyl, which then flies away, only to be snatched out of the air by a predator within seconds. The caveman then goes into a cave and exchanges grunts and growls and screeches with another caveman (for the benefit of the viewing audience, the conversation is subtitled):

Caveman 1: Package didn’t make it.

Caveman 2: Did you use Fed-Ex?

C 1: No.

C 2: Then you’re fired.

C 1 (so stunned by the unfairness of it that he beats the cave floor with both hands in frustration): But Fed-Ex hasn’t been invented yet!

C 2 (dismissively turning his attention to something important on the boulder that serves as his desk): Not my problem.

The newly-unemployed caveman storms out of the office-cave, sees a cute little dinosaur walking by, and in a fit of pique, gives it a vicious kick.

At which point he is stepped on and flattened by a passing brontosaurus.

You agitating my dots?

?!? If you’re talking Alka Seltzer you can’t possibly forget the jingle that caught on to school yards everywhere….Plop Plop…Fizz Fizz

Or School’s Out!

I get a chuckle from this one Oka Cheese because it satires the cultural/language issue in Canada pretty well.

One of my favorite pieces of trivia is that this was directed by Michael Bay.

Surprised he didn’t blow up at the end.

“Day Vear!”

“Evening Vear!”

A Wendy’s commercial from the 80s featuring a Soviet fashion show.

It’s hard to top Stan Freberg’s Jeno’s Pizza Rolls commercial. Some of the references are obscure now, but for pure delight, it’s never been topped.

Freberg is the gold standard of funny commercials. Here’s a sampling (including Jeno’s)

“Today the pits, tomorrow the wrinkles.”

Yeah, GEICO does a great job of coming up with new, often funny ads, run them for a week or two, then replace it with something totally different. I really liked their recent lemonade stand ad. Ice T!

The Ice T/lemonade commercial is hilarious. Every time we see it, we smile.

Anybody rememmber these classics from outpost.com?

Seriously – these were not in-house gags, they actually aired.
