Fav pro male tennis player

Mark Keil, one of the lowest ranked players ever to make it to the pros. But by some fluke, he beat one of the highest, and a genuine champion, Pete Sampras.

He made a documentary about the experience that was pretty funny called The Worst Player Ever to Beat Pete Sampras. It actually got picked up by some of the smaller indie film fests, which was very good for a first time filmmaker with a short.

Don’t know whatever became of him, but I met him when he had just failed as coach of Indiana University tennis because he had a substance abuse problem. He was just out of rehab when I met him, though, and in a really good mood. He was so funny, I remember thinking he ought to give stand-up a try.

Next?

Arthur Ashe for me.

Fav pro female tennis player?

Gabriella Sabatini

Fav NHL hockey player

Chris Chelios. An excellent player, with a career that lasted forever. He played for both my favorite NHL team (the Blackhawks), and my collegiate alma mater (University of Wisconsin) – he and I were (at least briefly) at Wisconsin at the same time, and he went out with a friend of mine a few times.

YMF winter memory?

Thanksgiving Day, 1950. I was five years old, and there was a HUGE blizzard in the eastern U.S. We were expecting lots of guests for the holiday, with lots of food, but the holiday was cancelled with everybody snowed in. There were drifts of snow up to our second-story windows. When the street was finally plowed, there were mountains of snow on both sides of the street, and when we finally got dug out, all the kids climbed up the snow and slid down into the street (there was virtually no traffic).

But we had enough food to eat, until mom could get to the store two weeks later. But we got damn sick of turkey.
