This was a HUGE deal in my family when I was a kid, and from the time I was 10, I got off school to help at the polls (my father was a precinct committeeman). Afterwards, watching the returns at the Democrat headquarters, where someone would open champagne with every win, or Scotch with every loss (there was sparkling juice for the kids), and cake, and buffet platters, and huge projection TVs was so exciting for me. I still get excited before election day like something really special is happening.
I also used to work at the polls every single year, before I had a baby, and I’ve worked a few years since when I’ve been able to manage it.
The first year after I turned 18 when I could be a REAL, OFFICIAL, PAID WORKER was the biggest rite of passage in my life after by Bat Mitzvah.
