I heard a comedian - I think it might have been Gary Gulman - saying the least-used app on his phone was the phone. It seems people don’t really want to talk on the phone, but they won’t be without theirs for reasons. Assuming you carry one with you (sorry, land lines don’t count here) what do you use your phone for most often?
I will admit, I resisted getting a smart phone for a long time - I liked the portability of my cheapie flip phone and I certainly wouldn’t want to watch a big-screen movie epic on a tiny little hand-held screen. But I’m on my second smart phone (had to replace the first one ahead of the switch away from 3G) and while I don’t walk around all day bent over the screen, I’ve found several handy features.
Like texting - I really like texting. It’s not as intrusive as a phone call going in either direction, plus it eliminates the need to call back and ask “What time were we meeting again??” because the conversation is right there! I texting.
The other most-used function for me is the clock-alarm-timer, sometimes in conjunction with the calendar. I set reminders for appointments or other things, then I can go about my business without fear of forgetting. As I write this, I have a timer set to remind me I have to leave at 7. No chance of the intrarwebs distracting me.
Third most used is the camera, specifically because I have the most amazing grandkids in the world, the older of whom loves having her picture taken, or better yet, a video.
I’ll occasionally use it to look up something or post on FB or here, but mostly, I do those things on a real computer or my tablet. My mini-pocket-computer is mostly just and adjunct to my brain, and I find I’ve become more and more reliant upon it.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 42 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 75 and N.O.S. for the day. We shall sloth around da cave today. Tonight is men’s night over to the church house, thus that will take care of sup. Steaks are marinatin’ and beer is chillin’ as I post.
I like my smart phone. It’s an iphone but not one of the big ass ones. It’s called an iphone SE whatever that means. Text is by far my favorite feature. Like MOOOOOOM said, I really like the fact that it’s like a phone convo except everything is right there so I can look at it again for info if’n I need to do so. I like the calendar and reminder stuff for appointments. I like the camera. I like the todo list maker thingy for stuff like grocery lists cause since I will take my phone with me, I never forget my list! When I am not at da cave and want to do sump’n like sneak in here or look at the book of faces, I will do that via my phone. I still don’t want to talk on it much, however. That’s a lifelong thing for me.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah,
Unfortunately for me, I pretty much just listen to the radio in the car while driving, so songs will remain a mystery if the DJ doesn’t identify them. But sometimes my husband use a similar app to identify a song or singer when I’m driving.
swampy - I’ve made shopping lists occasionally, but I still tend to go old-school pen and paper most of the time. Guess I should crawl into the 21st century, huh?
It’s currently 41 degrees and raining. Rain will continue throughout the day.
I would say my most used feature or app is actually FB messenger. The kids and I communicate via that every day. Next is my camera and Lens, then Spotify, the alarm feature when I travel, texting, finally the calendar for reminders. I also play Wordscapes on it every day to give myself a five-minute break or from something tedious. I listen to Spotify while out running/walking, sometimes during work, and while on road trips via the car stereo.
The visit with the kids was most excellent. Everyone loved dinner and ate plenty. My mother was up to her usual, but I managed to shut her down, and then she behaved. She was very complimentary of new furniture, so I was pleasantly surprised there.
By 8:00 pm, I had 10,000 steps in. Those steps were accomplished by doing nothing more than vacuuming, washing the floors, doing some more laundry, chasing the grandkids, cooking dinner, cleaning up while cooking, and finally after eating. I couldn’t believe it because I never stepped foot outside the house all day.
I am well and truly tired. The weekend was very busy, all weekend. I need a day of sloth to recover, but I have multiple meetings and shouldn’t miss them. I am hoping next weekend is an easy weekend.
Hands down texting. I have a notes app where I keep passwords, but I paper and pen for shopping lists. I like the Kindle app so I can read when stuck waiting. Local weather app is important.
I’m on prednisone for sinus inflammation and it’s giving me insomnia. Never happened before. I’m not happy.
Texting, weather and the Nest app for my thermostat.
Up and out the door, in fact I’m already in the shop, about to get to buildin. Got 7 big boxes to put together and paint. The designer calls them “plinths” but in reality they’re just wooden boxes.
Just got Toby to sleep. I got Roxy to school a few minutes late, but no biggie. SIL is done and on his way home, so yay! Not sure what the rest of the day holds.
I primarily use my phone for texting, putting reminders on my calendar, accessing the internet and grocery ordering because my kids started eating like the food is trying to run away. I’ve gotten to the point where I actively dislike talking on the phone.
Today is back to work day. I wish I’d taken one more day off. But, overlyboy slept through the whole night - I could hear him snoring through the wall - and hasn’t needed any medications since yesterday morning. His biggest issue right now seems mental. He’s already upset he can’t do everything he used to and keeps forgetting that it’s just a matter of time, though to a teenager, six months is a lifetime.
It’s gorgeous outside, or will be. I’m still in my PJs, but I’ve gotta get a walk in today. I feel stale and gross after spending so much time sedentary in the hospital. No amount of showering is taking care of that so far.
Work is trying to tempt us into going back into the office now with food trucks and delivery. Food is great, but not so amazing I’d deal with an hour-long drive on the way back from work, especially when delivery apps exist.
Morning all. Slept on the other side of the bed (a advantage being single allows) and stayed in until nearly 8am, so I guess it worked OK. Doing the morning internetting, then shop-n-sammich and work in the swimmin’ portion of my exercise routine. Youth soccer starts today, first time I am not coaching in a bunch of years (have a trip planned the first half of May so would miss three weeks and that isn’t fair to the kids) so might take a walk around the fields tonight just to see the activity (and if anybody needs help…). Weather is nice, due to reach 72F they say, but rain tomorrow (always rain tomorrow).
I just got a cell phone so still exploring it’s properties. I don’t call all that many people and don’t have that many I would text, but being able to take photos is a nice touch and I was able to load my ticket for a night out to the phone all by myself, so that was a good feeling. Still much to learn.
talkie, glad the boy is doing better.
VanGo, plinth away the day.
Taters, glad things went well with family, but 10,000 steps is a lot. Take it easy today.
OK, onward into the week. All y’all take care and have a good one.
Happy Moonday!
It was a not too bad 45 feels like 37 at the park this morning. The temp was higher than yesterday, but it didn’t feel as cold. Weird.
Good group of dogs with lots of running and playing.
Texting is for sure what I use the most, although I do talk quite a bit on my phone as well. Texting is okay for a short conversation, but most of mine are marathon talks. I’d be lost without my time and weather widget. I play a lot of games on my phone, and listen to YouTube. I use the calculator a lot, and the alarm clock. I use it to check my Ring app, and the banking apps. I use Google, Gmail, and my camera. I have an app called Fluid that I use as my wall paper. I have signed and faxed documents using my phone.
I disabled all the social media stuff, they were too annoying.
OH MY! A HUGE black and white cat was just up on the ledge of my living room window. That is a huge leap to get up there, more than five feet. It sat there for a few minutes, staring in the window and jumped back down. I’m used to seeing birds and squirrels on the ledge, never a cat before.
It was bigger than Adam.
Sometime today I want to take the dogs to the dog wash. I want to get them cleaned up to go to my mother’s. Ripple is blowing his coat and needs a good brushing. My son is going to bake cookies to take, and some muffins. We only have one stick of butter, so will be a single batch of cookies. I may stop at the 7-11 to get some butter on the way back from the dog wash, but that is not a priority. I can always stop at Krispy Kreme on the way down. I need to do laundry that I didn’t do yesterday, unless I want to be traveling naked tomorrow.
I need to pack up some stuff to take with us. She likes the grocery bags we get up here, a thicker plastic bag with handles. She can use them to put out recycling, we can’t. I found a few things in the pantry I won’t use, with four boys in her house, anything and everything gets eaten.
I have to irk too, so I guess I should be getting busy.
There wasn’t a lot of work this morning. Which was good, because there was even less help. And it was Hell(o) Fresh Monday I ended up pulling Bottom Blue on 300. #306 had all the meal kits(either there’s a football team on that route, or everybody in the neighborhood has a tapeworm). #304 had all the boxes of screws and ceiling fan kits. #305 had cases of Bounty and TP. I am sore.
My most used app is texting. I like being able to think before I speak.
WetOne, I do not like Prednisone. It makes me nervous.
“The journey of 1000 miles starts with 10,000 steps between the kitchen and living room.”
Probably the camera, as I have Plantnet for identifying plants. I also have Birdnet for identifying birdsong. I’m not a big texter (although the audio option makes it easy for arthritic hands to use) and few people have my phone number.
Today I’ll try to convince someone to come fix the weather stripping on the rear French doors. We’re approaching one month to listing the house and it’s tough to get anyone to respond that quickly. Also need to wangle a dental cleaning on short notice.
I don’t really text all that much compared to most people, I think. Mrs W and I text each other a handful of times during the day, usually just a few words each. Yesterday I had a short (4 total messages) text convo with my Sis-in-law. Once in a while I need to contact somebody from irk. That’s about it. I actually find texting more intrusive than a phone call, because people expect a reply NOW. A call is easier to ignore.
My Internet browser (Safari) is how I get to SDMB, and I google stuff a lot, so that’s probably my most-used. Also, Apple Music on my way to and from irk every day, the Wikipedia app whenever I’m curious about something, IMDb for those “what show have I seen her on?” moments, Twitter more than I’d like to admit…
And I have lots and lots of games and other apps that I don’t use a lot, but are still nice to have when I want them. Smart phones are awesome.
Another Moanday, which is actually my Wednesday. Spring breaks are hitting, so the zoo will be busy on weekdays the next few weeks. I don’t mind, but I usually like a slow Monday after a crowded weekend. Not gonna happen today.
Our boarding passes for our cruise are electronic. I may print them out just in case, but it shouldn’t be necessary.
SIL’s CAT went quickly - I think maybe they took him early because he got there early, so I was out of there well before 10. Now, dunno. It’s nice out and I really should mow the ditch - maybe I will. Maybe not. Who knows…
I use my phone quite a bit for watching TV shows and movies. I’ll use it for catching up on South Park or Superman and Lois if I happen to miss it when it airs. At dialysis, I’ll throw on Bar Rescue on Pluto TV. Last night, I watched the overtime period of the Arizona-TCU basketball game on my phone.
I just filed a formal complaint with the State Insurance Commission against United Health Care. When i bought me cell phone almost three years ago I started getting calls from UHC for a woman named Laverne Smith. Despite the thirty or so times I have been assured that they have corrected this issue, I continue to get robocalls. Sometimes they stop for a month or two, but they always start back up. I have had two conversations with people who claim that they are upper management in the last three weeks, one of which gave me his cell phone number, who have told me that the situation has been permanently resolved. In that three week period I have had three calls. I spoke to the guy who gave me his number this morning to notify him of the complaint. I also told him that I will continue to file complaints until this stops.
I know I could just block the number and not get the calls. It is the principle here. UHC, I am sure, has been just shining me on these last three years knowing that there is nothing I can do to make them stop. Maybe the State Insurance Commission will convince them of their mistake.
