There’s a Swedish proverb: “Shared joy is double joy; Shared sorrow is half a sorrow"
So share when you feel like it. That’s what Mumpers are for.
I think that the golf cart said something very rude and Gordie of course had to take umbrage at the outrage.
cookie, I’m sorry for your loss and pain. Four years doesn’t sound that long at all, you must miss him something terrible. If speaking of his passing will help settle your mind, I am more than willing to listen and offer support and sympathy.
I’ve been to one once over twenty years ago. I used to smoke tobacco, so you would think I’d like to be in a place where everyone smoked. You would be wrong. Once a place has been crossed off my list, it usually stays off my list of places to go. They are probably much nicer without the overflowing ashtrays of the one in Phoenix all those years ago.
It was a beautiful day and I didn’t want to waste it inside. Hubs, of course, turned the AC on and played his computer game so we both were happy. GG was confused.
Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off to heave. It may be another long one.
I wonder if his mom was killed at a driving range
“My name is Ignio MontoyaGordie. You killed my fathermother. Prepare to die.”
So what what do y’all do whe it’s 0300, and you want scattered, smothered, and covered and a fistfight? And you can’t measure weather without the Waffle House Weatehr Index:
Closed Waffle House: Bad
Jim Cantore in front of a closed Waffle house: Make peace with your deity
Jim Cantore won’t go near a closed Waffle House: Ragnarok
And so cool! There’s two mini trains near us, but only children get to ride them, as the trains are smaller.
We’ve been talking about spending some days in San Francisco the next time we go to Seattle. The last time we were there together was before 2000. We had planned to do a sabbatical in 2020, but…
Nashville’s also on my list of places I would like to visit. Never been there, and we have a friend that lives in the area, not to mention there’s some mumpers in the area.
This week was busy. Monday I had a meeting with a neighbor because I will be standing in for her during a meeting of the street cooperative. I thought it would take 30 minutes - we talked for 2.5 hours.
Same day my mom got her knee replaced. She went home on Tuesday and I ordered flowers to be delivered.
On Wednesday we went to the garage to get the summer tires put on the car.
On Thurday, I spent much of the day moving the sprinkler. For the first time since 1864, Luzern has had no measureble rain. None. So we have to water, now that the temperatures are constantly above freezing.
Today we have all sorts of fun planned. Already cleaned the shower. Visits to the recycling center AND the beverage center are on the calendar. Bought hamburger yesterday and made patties, so we will dust off the grill today.
I use Reminders on my phone to help me remember to do maintenance tasks (rotate the mattress), take Vitamin D (3 times a week, so it’s not every day) and other things.
I use Notes to keep track of things I need to plan - shopping at the mall, shopping in Luzern, things to do in Zurich, etc.
And I look at the weather, book of faces and mail quite often. If I have time to kill, I’ll look at birdtalk and reddit. I usually don’t look at the Dope on my phone, because I don’t feel like trying to respond using the phone keyboard. I prefer my laptop.
Definitely. It’s probably not really crap, though.
After reading about other people’s experiences, I am deinitely not going on a cruise with certain people. I think the train is the way to go.
Had to look him up, but I wasn’t surprised to see that he’s a meteorologist. I’ve only been close to a Waffle House once, and no one will go with me, so I haven’t been. I’m not going to one on my own.
Finally caught up, and there’s a lot of people who need some down time and lots of hugs. Spring has sprung, but the current world events seems to be sucking the air out of the room.
I need to go reset some of my Reminders, as reality does not always sync with the phone. And then maybe figure out what to do with my home office. I want to shift my desk about 8", but that means taking everything off of it first, so it becomes a bigger job that one would think. NEVER move a desk with a monitor on it. That’s asking for trouble.
I also have some things I keep meaning to get frames for. Maybe we should go to Ikea. Maybe not today - probably there’s a lot of people there.
Wishing you all a relaxing Saturday which will allow you to recover from the stress-filled week.
You’d think Febreeze or Glade would come up with an incense-scented air freshener - all the scent, none of the fire risk.
(Sorry, it’s early and that’s where a not-awake brain goes…)
You know how it works here - you can get anything and everything out of your system. And even if we don’t know how to respond, we’re still with you. Yanno, friends…
Neither have I. There are none near where we live now, and when there was one nearby in FL, it was just ick. We did stop at a Huddle House on the road once, and it was pretty gross. But they’re not near us either.
This made me laugh more than it should have!
I got on Amtrak’s emailing list and I get all kinds of good deals to my inbox. Maybe one day we’ll do a train trek. The one part that is less than appealing is having to haul our luggage from train to hotel to train again. At least on the ship, your bags show up in your cabin and are whisked away the night before you disembark.
FCD wants my help in his shop this morning - he’s having problems with his CNC router, and we need to get the whole work table up on a lift so he doesn’t have to lie on the floor to access the wiring. Then we’re meeting with our daughter to work out the details of next weekend’s boat move. And somewhere in there, I need to push the vacuum around. So an exciting day ahead here. ![]()
Happy Saturday!
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 46 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 71 and N.O.S. for the day. Not a whole lot doin’ today. However, I shall finalize, as much as possible, the schedule for April. We tossed around the idea of goin’ out to grab food as our main sustenance of the day. All this talk about Waffle House has kinda got me hankerin’ to go there. Mid to late afternoon is before prime brawl time.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah.
Happy Sattidy Y’all!
Afternoon, mumpers! It’s 17C/62F and sunny today. The weather app says “This is the perfect day to go to one of those weird cuddle clubs. No, really.”
doggio sorry to hear about your aunt, nutter or not.
Cookie time doesn’t heal, the best it can do is maybe make the immediate hurt a bit less every year.
sari I’m glad Ripple behaved but sorry about Barky. I think it would be kinder to tell her that there’s a problem rather than have her thinking everything’s ok all the time. Sorry to hear about your mum too, cancer is such a hard thing to deal with. I was with my mum all through her lung cancer treatment and I know she made the decisions that were right for her even though it was tough for her, and for us.
Mixed bag today, heard about Taylor Hawkins’ death and also the passing of a DJ friend (Susan Keith, known as DJ Suzy from Indie Mania). On the plus side, been to the gym for bootcamp and spin, and hit 150rpm in a seated sprint in the spin class. We are off to town for lunch at the Good Chinese place, blokie’s getting his hair cut, and there may be a pub or two involved.
nellie and dicey, if you ever get to the Nashville area, I’ll set up a mini mumpfest at one of my local Waffle House locations before fight time.
My usual order in one is a patty melt, an order of scattered, smothered, covered chunked and an unsweet tea. I avoid the coffee there like the plague, given its acidity, so you may want to order iced tea or a coke to drink.
unknown, you may want to try one out again, given that even WH has to abide by smoking local smoking ordinances.
Waffle House was known as Waffle and Steak in Indiana for a lot of years before renaming to the corporate name. It or any other 24 hour place that served breakfast was always a ritual stop after playing out or partying and before going home. It gave the alcohol a chance to be diluted. ![]()
Up, caffeinating, breakfasted and surfing the net with a reddish dog napping on my lap. I need to go to Nolensville (hi magic!) later today for a Marketplace buy. Other than that, there will likely be a trip to the dog park, some yard work and messing around in the studio.
Stay safe and healthy y’all!
I have achieved some productivity - showered and dressed, tossed a load in the washer, scooped the cat box, and unloaded the dishwasher. Go me!!!

I only have one of the ROF Press books. But I keep up with the regular series, as I enjoy it so much. I don;t know what part of the country you are in, but it would be cool to meet up, have a Dopefest even.
All this Waffle House talk, I just had to look up ‘scattered, smothered, covered’. Sounds like potatoes I would love. See below for potato porn. Sadly I’m hundreds of miles from being able to scratch a Waffle House itch. Y’all are just gonna have to go for me and tell me about it (swampy, didja get that?).
Good morning everyone.
Chef, I am sorry for your pain. I really liked the quote from nellie. That is exactly how that kind of pain feels to me.
As I am also in Washington state, I’ve never been to a Waffle House either. At least, I don’t think so. I drove across the states as an almost first-grader when we moved back from Germany, but that was a long time ago and I don’t particularly remember stopping to eat anywhere. I also went out on the road with my husband when he became an OTR driver back in 1989. I don’t remember stopping at Waffle House. We mainly ate at truck stops like Petros and some little diners with big parking lots.
Yesterday, other than cleaning dishes, was a day of total sloth. Well, wait…I guess I went outside and picked up dog poo, and rounded up some branches for the yard waste bin. But, other than that, bad TV reigned. Seriously, I watched some seriously B grade movies. I don’t know why.
Today, however, I want to get some chores done. Sitting around all day made me sore as hell.
Sending hugs, yays, and boos as appropriate. Time to clean the kitchen and knock some chores out.
Laundry is done. FCD is getting tidied, then we’re going to get something to eat before going to Daughter’s house. I managed to push the vacuum around a little bit - how can 3 small animals generate so much sheddage???
I understand, believe me. The Princess sheds so much I wonder how there’s still any fur attached to her actual body, and Birdiebrain is nearly as bad with the feathers.
I’m going to level with you. They’re all ick. IMO, YMMV.
There are packages for this! I was just looking at something for the Canadian Rockies. They will bring your bags to your hotels, you can pick some excursions (or none), and so on. Very similar to a cruise.
boofae I’m sorry about your friend. I’d heard about Taylor Hawkins. Enjoy the Good Chinese Place and the pubs. ![]()
sari I think boofae is right. Someone should say something to Barky. It looks like it will fall to you, which sucks.
Did I mention we broke Bender (our Roomba)? It wasn’t the fur, but boy is it getting furry without his help. ![]()
We binged Reacher last night. Overall I enjoyed it. I think it was an episode or 2 too long.
Today I need to work on finding a new place to nest during the day. My back is out and where I’ve been sitting isn’t doing it any favors. I also have litter boxes to change. Other than that, I expect a busy day of trying a guitar, reading, and watching some shows.
Happy Saturday everyone.

By the time I went to bed last night I was in a much better mood, and you’ll never guess what snapped me out of it…
Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls (promo)
Seriously!
I get newsletters from the New York Times’s “Watching” section that provide TV and movie recommendations. Late yesterday afternoon their “what to watch this weekend” email arrived in my inbox, and it mentioned this show (which just arrived on Amazon Prime yesterday): Lizzo held a competition for new “big grrrl” backup dancers to go on tour with her. I know who Lizzo is and I like “Good As Hell” but I don’t know much about her, and I was a little wary of a “fat dancers” show – some people confuse body positivity and self-worth with being bitchy and entitled – but I enjoy some reality dance stuff and the review was interesting so I figured I’d check it out while I ate dinner. I wound up binge-watching the first four episodes (out of eight). ![]()
I think the coolest thing is that the 10 women aren’t actually competing with each other: Lizzo makes it clear from the start that there are 10 spots available, if they each earn one. So, each woman just has to prove that she deserves to join the tour – based on dancing skills, personality, ability to take direction, etc. The first four episodes made me both smile and cry, and around the middle of the third episode I realized that my bad mood had disappeared. I’m looking forward to watching the last four eps this weekend.
It’s almost 12:30, and I’m still in my jammies.
My appointment to pick up my jewelry is in an hour; I’ll throw on some sweats and a baseball cap for that quick errand. Once I’m back home I’ll shower and dress properly, and decide how I want to get downtown this evening. Driving is fastest and easiest, but I have no patience for street parking and the garage I normally use closes earlier than I think I’ll want to leave tonight. I’m leaning toward trying Uber/Lyft. I should have no problem getting a ride into the city, I just don’t know if it might be hard to get back to the 'burbs afterwards. I figure at the end of the night I’ll try getting a car while some of the people I know (and like) are still around, so I can beg a ride off someone if needed.
(I wish the Metro system weren’t such a joke right now: I live 2 miles from a station and the venue is walking distance from one, but half of Metro’s cars have been out of service since October because of a safety issue. You can get to a station and have to wait 20-30 min for the next train. With transfers, it could easily take three times as long to ride as to drive…while being cold, dirty, etc. Ugh.)
A very apt description!!
I thought that was patchouli…? ![]()
2nd vote for Nag Champa…
Years ago I told Sunflower that there were three things to which one would think I would take offense but she had blanket permission to tell me:
- Here, have an Altoid
- Are you sure you want another beer/glass of wine?
- That beard really needs a trim.
Today is a #3 day. Off to trim my beard!
Sorry for your pain Cookie. It’ll come around less often as time goes by, but it’ll never entirely stop coming around.

I don’t know if I’ve ever been to a Waffle House. There aren’t any around here. Denny’s has to fill that niche in this area, I guess. For a good breakfast any time of the day or night, we have The Original Pancake house.
Wifey has left me to my own devices again today. So far I’ve walked to the post office and to the grocery store, and am now avoiding going down to the basement to organize stuff some more. I was an elevator last night - up and down, up and down, so not feeling too spry this morning, err… afternoon.
Well, the internet isn’t going to browse itself, ya know.
An app for a news outlet. It’s very handy to be able to browse the news in that app. Plus, I can configure what kind of things it will send notifications to me for.
ive been to a few waffle houses since I had relatives that lived in the south and yeah they make Dennys look upscale I’m sad I have free b-day pancakes but the ihop by Me closed …
