Your ONE favorite Simpsons episode

The one with Frank Grimes in it is probably my favorite.

I love Paul McCartney asking Lisa if she wants to hear a song - and then saying “take it away, Apu!” as Apu begins singing “I’m Sgt. Pepper’s lonely hearts club man! I hope I will enjoy my show…”

This one is an easy one for me:

Homer vs. the 18th Amendment

My favorite part is when Marge finds out Homer is the Beer Baron…I can’t seem to find that quote anywhere, but surprisingly, Marge is proud of him.

Also the line about the stairs to roof being behind the O’douls.

Lisa, “What is someone buys one?”
Apu, “I don’t know, that has never happened”

Please feel free to correct the quote, I am sure I mangled it.

Jim

Good choice. Yeah, she says something about ‘in all the years I’ve known your father, this is by far the cleverest thing he’s ever done.’

Okay then.
Lisa: “Wow, a secret staircase. But what do you do if someone wants a non-alcoholic beer?”
Apu: “You know, it’s never come up.”

Trilogy of Error. The Linguo, the grammar robot episode.

The end of the first segment (Homer sits down in a field with his severed thumb and a jar of pickled eggs, then is greeted by a projectile that turns out to be Linguo’s dying head) is great. It’s saying “Look: we can still do this when we want to”.

I’d like to hear more about why you like this one. Everybody – by reputation, anyway – hates this episode. I don’t think it’s that terrible, although I don’t think the story works. But I’ve never heard anyone name it a favorite before.

Homer and Apu, when Apu moves in with the Simpsons. First it has my favorite song, “Who needs the Kwik-E Mart”; Homer being smart, “karma can only be apportioned by the Cosmos”, 'He’s got me there"; the original Kwik-E-Mart, “not very convenient”; my all time favorite sign, “Master knows all, except combination to safe”; Homer’s multiple trips to the Hospital; Bite back with Kent Brockman; and James Woods in a fantastic guest starring role.

Curiosity here, was that from memory or do you have a handy reference? I have friends that can quote entires episodes, I cannot even remember some of my favorite lines.

Jim

I usually double-check Simpsons quotes before I post them. From memory, I think I had it as “What do you do if someone asks for a non-alcoholic beer.”

Excellent episode. “By definition you can’t give more than 100 percent.”

But my choice has to be Homer Goes to College, mostly because I hate that Crusty Old Dean!
“Marge there are 2 kinds of people at college. Jocks and Nerds. As a jock . . .”
“Homer, those boys seem very nice but they’re clearly nerds.”
“Hey, he’s not the wallet inspector!”

I’ve heard that many people don’t like this episode, but I love “A Star is Burns”, the movie festival episode. Loads of hilarious lines!

Jay: [contemptuous] How do you sleep at night?
Rainier: On top of a pile of money with many beautiful ladies.
Jay: Just asking. Yeesh!

Though interface2x and Gangster Octopus provide incredible temptations, I’ve gotta go with El Viaje Misterioso de Nuestro Homer, because not only does it have my favorite celebrity cameo (Johnny Cash), but it opens with the Guatemalan insanity peppers of Quetzlzacatenango, closes with the Captain’s precious cargo of hot pants, and features the best animation (Homer’s “spiritual journey”) of the entire run of the series. Remarkable stuff, and very funny.

Marge: Oh, look at that adorable spice rack! Eight spices? Some must be doubles. Ore-GAH-no? What the hell?

Bart: Lis, check it out. “Time for chili.”
Lisa: I saw it, Bart.
Bart: You’re just mad 'cause there’s no clock in your hat.
Lisa: What hat?
Bart: Pff. Ah, this baby’s wasted on an idiot like you.

Homer: We don’t have anything in common. Look at these records: Jim Nabors, Glen Campbell, the Doodletown Pipers. Now look at her records! They stink!

Homer: Hello? Is this…GBM? Uh, yeah. I read in the personals that you were seeking a soulmate. Well, I also like rainy days and movies. Uh-huh… Uh, no, I don’t like that… Or that… No, it’s not that I’m afraid. I’mgoingtohangupnow, bye-bye.

In Your Face, Space Coyote!

I do love some of the ones already mentioned, so I’ll give a shout-out to another of my favorites: Lost Our Lisa. Homer and Lisa share a bonding moment without Homer having been a jerk first. “I’ll trade you these balloons if you let me use your cherry-picker.” Cletus scooping up roadkill to serve at a child’s wedding, and offering to give Lisa a lift into town once Brandine’s done squeezin’ out that baby in the front seat. A much-overlooked classic.

It’s a cheap joke, but “Is that Dad?” “Either that or Batman’s really let himself go” always leaves me howling.

El Viaje Misterioso de Nuestro Jomer (The Mysterious Voyage of Homer)

Jonny Cash was the voice of the Coyote.

Best line: “When I’m kicking you it means Hurry Up”

“A bullfrog?” “Thets a silly noime I’da called it a Chuzzwazza”

Homer’s Barber Shop Quartet.

Highlights:

-The B-Sharps hold an audition to replace Cheif Wiggum. Willy sings “Doontoon” and Jasper sings “Theme from a Summer Place” using the title as lyrics to a song that is actually an instrumental.

-Johnny Carson makes fun of Wiggum while acting the role of Carnac.

-The many allusions to The Beatles

-Jasper and Abe switch frequencies on the radio to listen to (an excellent parody impression of) Paul Harvey.

-Homer: Lisa, did you see the Grammys?
Lisa: You beat Dexy’s Midnight Runners.
Homer: Well, you haven’t heard the last of them.

-The B-Sharps’ new song about C. Everett Coop.

-Barney’s Yoko-like girlfriend to Moe: “I’d like a single plum floating in perfume served in a man’s hat.”

I’m kind of fond of the episode where Troy McClure marries Selma.
I’m not that crazy about the episode as a whole, because Marge’s sisters just annoy me, but I love the musical “Stop The Planets of the Apes, I Want to Get Off”. Dr. Zaius, Dr. Zaius … help me Dr. Zaius!

I also like it because it’s a whole episode with Phil Hartman.

All of these are great.

I have to give a shout-out to the episode where Homer joins the secret Stonecutters society. Patrick Stewart as the voice of the head Stonecutter was terrific.

"…and to celebrate this momentous occassion; we’re havin’ ribs. "
