Observations: (1) Its nice to see some other Destroyer fans here on the SDMB. (2) The Killers - “Somebody Told Me” is a really cool song. (3) I have the weirdest mix of musical interests.
(I should note that I’ve been listening to the CDs these appear on a lot, so these are just my current favorites off of them. It’s been changing a lot.)
Well, you’ve got another week to get caught up. No new episodes until the twentieth.
I need to replace one of my songs with “What a Waster” by the Libertines. I heard it just now, and it absolutely rules. Maybe I should just store it up for next week’s list. I’ll have to think about it.
I didn’t hear anything both new and good, so my picks are all older this week.
Week ending May 15th:
Screaming Trees " Nearly Lost You There" (I switched radio stations and heard it twice in 10 minutes!)
Live " Heropsychodreamer"
Hal feat. Gillian Anderson " Extremis"
Greenwheel " Breathe" (these guys, not Melissa Etheridge, wrote this song)
Sunna " Power Struggle!"
Oddest mention:
I’m not sure how it happened, but a station I was listening to played two songs at once. " Bullet with Butterfly wings" by the Smashing Pumpkins and “Mad World” by Gary Jules are not good songs to mix together, if anyone was wondering. It was sureal. And kind of terrible.
Pearl Jam - Rearview Mirror
Nine Inch Nails - Something I Can Never Have
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Guns ‘n’ Roses - November Rain
A Perfect Circle - The Outsider
Why yes, I did just break up with my girlfriend a couple of weeks ago, how could you tell?
The Clash - Kingston Advice Ignored song of an ignored album. There’s a lot more to The Clash than angst.
Electric Light Orchestra - Eldorado Symphony (The Whole Thing) * An extremely solid concept album comprising one of the best Classical-Rock fusions ever made.*
Pink Floyd - Matilda Mother How can you ignore that funky oriental interlude?
Oasis – Digsy’s Dinner * Awful arrangement, yet somehow a powerful melody escapes from the cacophony. About as beautiful as you can get driving a bulldozer through a guitar factory.*
Scissor Sisters - Tits on the Radio Palpably camp and hilarious, though hiding a serious message.
I see that there are lot of Franz Feridinand fans around… I really need to make an effort to get in that album.
Belle and Sebastian - The Boy With The Arab Strap.
The Music - Getaway (saw them live on Thursday, brilliant!).
Verve - Where The Geese Go
Starsailor - Tie Up My Hands
The Bluetones - Slackjaw
[ol]
[li]White Stripes - I just don’t know what to do with myself*[/li][li]The Pretenders - Night in My Veins[/li][li]Hurrah! - Sweet Sanity[/li][li]David Bowie - Sweet Thing/Candidate[/li][li]Department S - Is Vic There?[/li][/ol]
Rolling round and round and round in my head this week courtesy of a couple of sleepless nights and a dental abcess.
For the week ending 30 May, I made an upbeat mix for all the barbecues I was attending. I listened to a lot of upbeat, summery songs. Not all of these made the cut, but these were the ones that ended up in my head.
They Might Be Giants - Man, It’s So Loud In Here (#1 for three weeks and holding)
Snake River Conspiracy - You and Your Friend
Beth Orton & Four Tet - Carmella (remix)
TMBG (again) - Bangs
Me First & the Gimme Gimmes - Nothing Compares 2 U (cover of Prince / Sinead O’Connor)
