I’ve been playing Ocarina of Time for the first time lately. First Zelda game I’ve played since my old NES gave up the ghost. And I have to say, I don’t really understand the complaints about the game’s new look for Windwaker. Every where I look, seems people are complaining it’s “too cartoony.” Which is weird, because Ocarina is incredibly cartoony. I just don’t get what the problem with the new version is. The demo on the Ocarina disc looks amazing. Look at the character’s faces: they have a huge range of expression, and that’s just from a series of clips that don’t last more than a second each. I can’t wait to see what a full cutscene looks like.
sturmhawke: The Last Express didn’t use cel-shading, it used good old fashioned rotoscoping. Totally different style of animation. Actually, considering the low-to-almost-nonexsistent frame rate in LE, I’m not sure I’d even call it animation. Fantastic game, none the less. Anyway, although I haven’t played the game yet, I think we might have to just agree to vehemently disagree on the art style. Windwaker looks amazing to me. Link actually seems to have some personality for a change.
mouthbreather: As I said in my previous post, I’m in pretty much the same boat as you. I never even got as far as the SNES version. Still, near as I can tell, there isn’t really any continuity in the Zelda-verse. Each game seems to stand pretty much on its own.
There is more subtlety to this question than you might think at first. But you’re right that in general, you can play any game on its own, with the probable exception of Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages for GBC.
Thanks for the reply. Windwalker’s not out until March, correct? If so, can you still pre-order to get this disk? Can you pre-order from any retailer?
Thanks in advance!
Mahaloth, on the options screen at the main menu, you may choose an option that allows the L button lock-off to end once you release the L button, if you so wish.
You may still pre-order The Wind Waker. It comes out in late March.
" Thanks for the reply. Windwalker’s not out until March, correct? If so, can you still pre-order to get this disk? Can you pre-order from any retailer?"
March 25thish, although you never know, they might bring it out sooner as it’s often in the store a few days before & some jump the gun.
Electronics Boutique has a $15 preorder instore, do that get the ooc two disk set immediately, no waiting… ebgames.com their website, accepts preorder but you won’t get the bonus disks until march 25th. I guess.
I ordered from ebgames.com and they sent me the bonus disk as soon as it was available.
I played it at an electronic store…
::VERY MINOR SPOILERS::
I was up against two bad guys, both of which had clubs, I knocked the club out of one of the bad guys hand. The club less bad guy then ATTACKED his friend, stole HIS club, then came after me.
AWESOME!
::End of spoilers::
You have to play the game, I think, to get into the graphics. From what I hear, the story in this Zelda game is a little more thorough, and it also explains the whole “Link” legacy a little more. So, maybe past games you have played will make a little more sense. This is just what I’ve heard.
mouthbreather
I highly doubt you will be left out because of the Zelda’s you’ve missed. I played the first 2 Zelda’s when I was a kid. I don’t know why, but after that I stopped playing Zelda, even though I have both a SNES and Game Boy. Then I picked up Both N64’s installments and was floored! Right now, I’m playing the games that I had missed, (Not the 2 recent Game Boy ones, but Links Awakening and A Link to the past), on my Game Boy. I know a feller who’s never played Zelda, but it getting a Cube just for Wind Waker.
THAT IS COOL!
So how is Ocarina of Time:Master Quest different than the regular Ocarina of Time? I read online that it is an updated version or something? Are there special things on the game?
Btw, I have O of Time for N64.
Master Quest features new, more difficult puzzles in the dungeons.
Many of the dungeons are completely rearranged. They took the pieces of Ocarina of Time and moved things around, added stuff, took away stuff. You end up going through many rooms in a completely different order with all new puzzles everywhere. It really toys with your knowledge of Ocarina of Time. I’d say it would be near impossible to beat Master Quest if you hadn’t already beaten Ocarina of Time.
Thanks guys! Man, I will not buy a game cube, I will not buy a game cube, I will not…Oh well, I still haven’t bought Majora’s Mask for N64. Is that a fun game?
That game is amazing! I perfer it to even the God status of Ocarina of Time.
Majora’s mask was disappointing in the way that it was impossible to beat without using a guide or walkthrough.
Ocarina was still beatable without using any guides.
Whoa, you needed a guide? (No offense). I completed the game without a guide with no problems (minue of course, the segments where you have to figure out a puzzle…a staple of the Zelda series).
Majora’s Mask is a bit overwhelming. Personally I think what they did with the time travel and all was pretty freakin cool. It is doable without a guide (though my youngest brother is a guide whore and it was always sitting there next to me, taunting and tempting) but I definitely found it harder than any other Zelda game. Not in a bad way however.
On the other hand one of my friends who likes the Zelda games and is fairly good at them couldn’t finish it without a guide. I think that Majora’s Mask is defintely for hardcore fans of the series and requires a willingess to be totally clueless for a while that many people just don’t have.
Oh and to semi-hijack does anyone know a good site that explains the connections between games? They come in obvious pairs but the sets of pairs don’t seem to realy have anything in common. It seems that they have been getting progressively earlier in time but the same story keeps repeating over and over in a modified form. While this is fairly cool I’m wondering if that is what is intended or if they just don’t care and like to riff on the same theme to see what they can get out of it.
And speaking of themes and hijacks the Nine Inch Nails version of the Legend of Zelda theme song is freakin awesome. Also the System of a Down one deserves an honorable mention. Anyone else know bands that have played it in concert or on an album?
Here’s the deal. Every Zelda (with the exception of a couple, such as Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask) stars completely different charectors. ‘Link’ represents internal good while ‘Gannon’ represents eternal bad. That is why Link meets Zelda for the 1st time in several of the games. This also explains why he never maintains his vast inventory. Shigeru Miyamoto recently confirmed this in an interview, I’ll try to find it.
Ok I see, sorta, though I’d really like to see the interview. Especially to find out what Zelda represents in this scheme.
Ooh, ooh, found it!

It’s mentioned on page 2.
I do believe they elaborated on that answer in another interview, but I’m not quite sure where I read that. But at least this validates what I mentioned
