Only four songs: Truly Madly Deeply, Torn, Crush and Slide.

The Way and Sweetest Thing did not make the cut.

Tubthumping by default.

I voted “Tubthumping,” “Torn,” “Crush,” and “The Sweetest Thing.” The first is kind of an iconic song for that time period. I’m not sure if I like it or not, but it’s kind of become music that I associate with that time in my life. I like all the versions of “Torn” that I’ve heard, from the first recorded version (“Braent” by Danish singer Lis Sorenson, to Ednaswap’s [who wrote it] to the clean, Top 40 Natalie Imbruglia version.) “Crush” by Jennifer Paige is a gem of a pop song, in my opinion, and somewhat underrated. And, well, “The Sweetest Thing” is a pretty U2 song that I happen to like.

How apropos. I just played “Crush” on Youtube to revisit that song and see if I like it as much as I thought I did (I do) and the next song that autoplayed was Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn.” Still love that one, too.

These are the two songs I voted for. They still hold up perfectly well (that chord change on “faint” always gets my attention).

In addition, Crush reminds me of the weeks that followed my moving in a flat of my own after I broke up with a long-term girlfriend. My own place, my first job, my own money for the first time in my life, meeting new girls… that was a weird, exciting and a bit unsettling time.
