2007 Weight Loss Club, June

I finished week 6 of couch-to-5k early in the week so I decided to squeeze in one more jog today. I am incapable of getting up early to exercise plus I didn’t sleep well last night so I had to go around noon. Well, I am not doing that again. It was partly cloudy so I hoped it wouldn’t be too hot and at first I was ok. Then my whole head started to feel really hot plus I realized I had 2 more songs to get through on my playlist instead of one like I thought. So I had to stop after 20 minutes (I’m supposed to do 25 min 3x next week). I know I can do 25 minutes because I did that on Tuesday and at least I got some exercise today.

I am trying not to weigh myself until Monday morning. I used to avoid the scale like the plague but now that I’m getting off my butt I want to see results.

IANAD, but I have a hypothesis. When you starve yourself for a while, your body goes into starvation mode. When you finally eat, your body grabs onto those calories like a frightened child grabs onto his mother’s thigh. They’re immediately stored as fat. You may have done better had you had a mid-afternoon snack.

Or maybe it’s just water weight.

eh, some days that happens. I did 4 miles Monday, and was all raring to go Tuesday to do the same thing…but I could only get in 2 before I just had to stop. So some days you do better than others…shrug…what matters is that you keep to doing something and keep working at it.

Velvet, I could have sworn I had typed a reply saying basically what ginger did…that some days we have those ups and downs, but the hamsters must have made off with it.

Still don’t have a scale yet, but my runs are getting better. I did 4 miles yesterday, so I think I’m finally at the point where I’ll be able to make that my daily distance more often. I still can’t seem to get myself motivate to do anything on Wednesday…so I’m still only at 4 days a week exercising. I think I’m going to try and find something else to do besides running. Or maybe run outside that day for a shorter distance.

That’s exactly what I was thinking, when I read that you weren’t eating for long periods, velvetjones. Nothing between lunch and midnight is a very long time to go without food, and I can’t blame you for needing to eat when you get home. Could you pack a small cooler full of snacks to take with you?

I weighed 176 at the doctor’s office this morning. That’s fully dressed, of course. I always weigh in the buff at home but for some reason they won’t let me undress to get weighed there. Bastards. Anyway, my doctor was quite pleased with my weight loss (14 pounds since the last time I was there) and the fact that I am exercising. She said it was quite an accomplishment considering the fact that I’m hypothyroid. Yay me!

I swear I knew that tdn but sometimes my brain just doesn’t register stuff. You’re absolutely right, I should have eaten something between lunch and midnight. I ate a big lunch and so wasn’t really hungry until we were well into the gig and then, I don’t like to eat when I’m singing because it’s hard to fit in on a 15 minute break. I won’t do that again.

My sweet, darling husband usually has something ready for me when I get home from work so I can grab a bite before we leave for the gig. I may have to pack some protein bars for those other times.

Jayjay and I did well this week. Both of us lost over 2 lbs, so we lost the weight that we gained last week and then some! Go us! I was actually .2 lbs short of hitting the 80 pound park. I begged but they didn’t give me any more gold stars…

WhyNot, welcome to Weight Watchers, and I just want to make sure that you know they have two different plans, the Flex plan (where you get a certain number of points each day) and the Core plan (where you eat foods off of a list, and don’t count points). JayJay and SuperVenusFreak are both on Core, and I was on it too. It can take a couple of weeks to “click,” but once it does, it’s a painless way to lose weight. No hunger.

Just making sure you saw that on the website

Yay! You go, guys!

The hubby and I bought a new scale today. It’s not going to do me a lot of good until I see my surgeon on the 12th of July and get weighed at his office, then I can see how our home scale compares to his scale. I know the home scale we used to have weighed me about 5lbs. heavier than his scale (I like his better  ).

I actually had a moment like that this week. I took my mother to a doctor’s appointment on Thursday, and weighed myself there. I was a pound and a half heavier than my weigh-in the past Saturday. I forget that different scales are not calibrated to be exactly the same.

Thanks! It’s been three days now, and it’s not bad. Of course, I’m a little afraid that it might not be that bad because it’s not much different than what I’ve been eating. That’s got me a bit worried ‘cause how I’ve been eating is how I got fat, so I’m afraid they might yank some points from me at my next weigh-in if I don’t lose. I have made some of those “small changes” everyone talks about though, like 2% cheese instead of the full fat stuff and skim milk instead of 1% or 2% (Don’t tell my husband that part - I poured the skim milk into the old 1% container! He hasn’t noticed.) I also picked up some low and no fat salad dressings, since ALL my salads’ points were coming from salad dressing and cheese! So maybe those little changes will be enough to make a difference - we’ll see on Thursday.

I so agree. It’s nice to be able to eat when I am hungry. It does take some adjusting and tweaking, but it is worth it.

WhyNot, welcome to the club. :). Jayjay and I go to meetings here. We have lucked into one with a great leader and a good all around bunch of folks. That really helps me at times.

I have also had alot of luck getting recipes from the Core thread on the message boards at the website. That is a good source for all sorts of questions too.

I would also recommend the following websites:

Beth’s Core Recipe Box

Heather’s Recipe Site

Kippy’s Website

There are plenty of good recipes out there. And if you have any questions, just feel free to ask me.

I just wanted to say thanks to whoever mentioned The Hacker’s Diet earlier in this thread, I read through it and started using it earlier this month to get an idea of what my consumption looks like.

http://www.physicsdiet.com is a great online implementation of the tracking and charting tools in the Diet and I watched my progress with it eagerly.

I’m telling you, it will. Even if you’re just drinking the right amount of water, that’ll make a big difference.

supervenusfreak, thank you so much for those recipe links! Even though I’m doing Flex, the Core recipes are great - by design, they have very few points, even though you’re not tracking them. Honestly, the reason I chose Flex instead of Core is my ice cream addiction. I can stand cutting down my ice cream consumption to 1 cup a night, (okay, not every night, but lots of them!) but cutting it out entirely is just setting myself up to fail. And cooking for a family who doesn’t have a weight problem means that I have to eat “regular” food, or sit there and smell pizza while eating another frakkin’ salad, and I just don’t have the willpower for that.

Thanks to the Flex plan, last night I had 4 slices of Papa John’s Hawaiian Barbeque Chicken Pizza for dinner and still stayed within my points! I had fat-free chocolate pudding made with skim milk for desert instead of ice cream - a whole cup of it. And I haven’t even dipped into my weekly allowance yet.

On the Flex plan you get a certain number of daily points, based on your weight, age and general activity level, as well as 35 Weekly points, which can be spread out over the week, or saved for one gloriously indulgent meal at a swanky restaurant (or pizza and chocolate with your girlfriends). You can also earn more points through exercise, but exercise isn’t required on the program. My daily points are 31 right now, and will be reduced as I reduce. Points themselves are derived by some formula involving calories, fat and fiber - two foods of equal calories, one high in fat and the other in fiber, will not have equal points values.

But I’m pretty sure my general activity level should be set higher, which will lose me some of those Activity Points I have been earning. I’m not going to change it yet, I’ll wait until the first weigh in and see what happens.

Holy $&@%! You’re right! I just weighed myself and I’ve already dropped 4 pounds! In three days! Woo-hoo! 244!

(I’ve always drank (drunk? drinked?) this much water, so it’s not that. It must be those “little changes”.)

I remember sattua expressing concerns very much like these upon starting the Core Plan; you know, being worried it wouldn’t work, because that’s how he’d been eating all along, it really wasn’t that much of a change, etc. But it’s working now.

See? See? You need to listen to us!

Hubby and I invested in a new scale at Wal Mart yesterday. It won’t do me much good, though, until I go to the doctor’s office on the 12th of July and see what his scale weighs me at, then come home and see what the differential is. But after this visit with the doctor, I’ll only have to see him every 3 months (barring problems), so I wanted to have a scale at home, so I can keep an eye on things. I just hope I can keep from getting obsessed about it.

I will tell you that yesterday, when I got dressed, I had to do my belt a notch tighter, and I could swear my face looks thinner than it has!

Now that my surgery’s over, the damned stent will come out on Thursday, then I can start exercising again!

(raises hand) How she had been eating all along.

And it was true. What I needed to make… were changes that I couldn’t have figured out myself. I was sooooo arrogant and soooo sure I knew better. I didn’t.

And Core does give you 35 points a week to spend on whatever you want. One cup of chocolate ice cream is 6 points. :dubious:

Due to a scheduling mixup, I got to the start a few minutes after the time cut-off for the 25 mile Orinda Reservoir loop. So I had no choice, I had to do the Sierra Road loop (the climb I mentioned that makes even the pros cry). Of course I planned to do Sierra Road anyway, but after ~70 miles, the temptation to call it off could have been strong. But now I needed that extra 16 miles to make it 100 miles.

Needless to say, I was a bit tired by the time I got to the base of Sierra, but took it slow and steady and ~50 minutes later I crested the top.

Totals for the day: ~95miles (the official distances were way off), ~9000 ft of climbing, and an estimated 7500 calories.

Up next week, the Giro de Peninsula…

Hey guys!

As I decided a while ago, this summer I’m working on not gaining any weight while I concentrate on writing my Masters thesis. It’s going well so far! No weight gain, and I may be even a couple of pounds lighter than when I left PA at the end of the school year.

I bought Dance Dance Revolution, which has a calorie counter, and I’m aiming at 150 calories per day, five times a week. It’s really fun, too! I’d recommend it for anyone who has a gaming system and a bit of money to spare for the game and the pad. Ms. Pumpkin, it might be good for you - no one sees me jump around like a crazy person but my boyfriend.

I’m eating bad stuff, but I’m also eating a lot of vegetables and friut (which is easy, since I love all food - healthy and not) and I’m still trying to be aware of portion control.

John T. Conklin, I so admire you for all the bike races you participate in. With my funky knees, I never learned how to ride, but I find myself engrossed in your posts. Would you consider opening a thread about your experiences? Maybe link some pics of your lovely area and the roads you travel? I think it would be interesting to more Dopers than just me.

Great analogy, tdn. After this week, I’m inclined to believe you. Since my indiscretions last weekend, I decided to get a little Draconian to try to stem the potential damage. Even though I was eating less, especially in the evenings (anyone hear my tummy rumbling?), I kept gaining. On Friday, irritated, I said to heck with it and overindulged. Still mainly veggies (more than I would have eaten otherwise) but there were two ice cream sandwiches involved too. Yesterday morning, I was down .8 pounds. Ohhhkay, I thought.

That afternoon my sister and I went to Zoopa and I had a large meal and then ate again later in the evening than I usually allow myself. The result is a .6 pound loss this morning and my newest record low in three decades; 174.4. What’s more, psychologically, I feel better for having let myself go a little and I feel I can happily get back on track again now.

But, I’ve realized that if my tummy is complaining, then it’s OK to give it something to calm it down. In fact, it may be that’s a signal that the my body might be laying in supplies for a long siege, hence filling up the old fat cells. Eating a little something would probably be the “all’s well” signal that my body needs to stop that.

We live and learn.

I was feeling a little depressed today because I felt like I’d never reach my goal. But instead of stuffing my face in an attempt to make myself feel (briefly) better, I went out for a run. It turned out to be my best run yet. I ran for 33 minutes and I think I could’ve gone on longer but it was getting dark. So now I am one teeny tiny step closer to my goal weight.
