Lithgow’s performance in Dexter was one of the most brilliant television performances in many years. He made the character scary as hell and at times pitiful old man and at times almost likable or at least pitiable.
Glad Parsons and Lynch won. Parsons, who wasn’t heavy to begin with, looks like he’s lost 25 pounds.
Cranston may have deserved it but after two consecutives step aside dude. Glad Paul was recognized.
I only watched bits and pieces and wondered if all of the banter when award winners were coming up as painfully unfunny as the few pieces I saw. Watching on youtube apparently it was.
Fantastic that Modern Family won what they did - I dislike Glee and was worried the hype would lead them to taking out most of the awards, but the awards seem to have gone to a great show instead (in my opinion).
I will say that Jane Lynch deserved her win, she’s the best thing about a dire show.
I think you’ve confused Parsons with Charlie Sheen. Sheldon Cooper is not Jim Parsons’s real personality. He makes a veery difficult character so totally believable. That is fine acting, along the lines of Hugh Laurie and House.
And oh, yeah–
Kermit the Frog voice–YYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH! for Jim Parsons.
Speaking of Charie Sheen, I was impressed with Leeds as his therapist and for her knockout performance as Spencer Reid’s loony mother on Criminal Minds. She’s another person who brings a character to life.
I think this guy deserves it every year. People don’t realize how talented he is at what he does. He is known as “one take Probst” because he does not rely on voice over to explain challenges and so forth. If you watch reality shows enough, you can tell that a lot of time, the camera cuts away during the explanation and the host does a voice over, pretending to be explaining the challenge live to the contestants.
Probst’s actual recording from when explains these things is used, and he almost always gets it perfect on the first try.
Have you ever seen Jim Parsons on an interview show? He is so much like Sheldon it’s scary.
He also comes off as kind of a jerk a lot of the time in those interviews. Especially when (before the show was a sure thing) he would swear up and down that he’s not a nerd and how dare people assume he is. Now that the show’s a hit, all of these nerdish tendencies that he swore he didn’t have are coming out in interviews.
Am I remembering correctly? Wasn’t SNL always in the variety category before? When did it get moved into the straight-up comedy category? Can’t say I’m a big fan of its performers being nominated for supporting actress-type stuff. Don’t know why. Guess I’m a traditionalist.
It is in the Variety category for the Writing/Directing/technical-craft awards.
But since they got rid of the Best Performance in a Variety Show category (which usually involved Stewart vs. Colbert vs. Living Legend Who Always Won), any performances along those lines got shuttled over to Comedy.
Ugh. I saw a photo on a news website with a caption like “Claire Danes at the Emmys”. I thought surely they had it wrong. That’s not Claire Danes. It’s like she’d been fed through the “generic Hollywood blonde” machine or something.
January wasn’t going to look like much of anything with Christina Hendricks anywhere close by
Did anyone else see the lady with the “Top Chef” group BITE IT in the aisle while going up to get an award. She slipped or tripped right after exiting her row, and fell forward and out of camera shot. Her gold-tassled bag and strappy sandal went flying backwards and landed near the seats. Padma (appearing rather drunk) couldn’t stop laughing about it on stage.
We watched the fall over and over, including in slow-motion, because it was just such a hilarious moment.
Bryan Cranston didn’t nominate himself. How does one “step aside”? And why? It seems rather presumptuous to say, “I’ve won enough, and I think I might win again, so don’t vote for me.” Actually, I, too, thought it might have been a bit much that he won three years straight, except for the fact that his performance really was that good. While the other nominees are great, their characters’ roles just aren’t in the same tragic stratosphere as Walter White (don’t know about Don Draper as I don’t watch Mad Men).
Saturday Night Live: 28* The Simpsons: 26** 24: 19 The Daily Show: 14 (including 8 for Best Variety Series) Mad Men: 12 (including 3 for Best Drama and 3 for Best Writing) Lost: 10 Monk: 8 Breaking Bad: 6 (including 3 for Best Actor) CSI: 6 Law & Order: SVU: 6 The Tudors: 6 Survivor: 5 Dexter: 4
*Performers that have won acting Emmys for SNL: Dana Carvey, Chevy Chase, Tina Fey, Gilda Radner, Justin Timberlake, Betty White
**Guest performers that have won voiceover Emmys for The Simpsons: Kelsey Grammar, Anne Hathaway, Jackie Mason, Marcia Wallace. Harry Shearer remains the only one of the six regular cast members to not win at least once.
Every series actor has to formally submit either one episode (for lead roles) or two (for supporting roles) to the Emmys before they can be considered “in the running” for the each year’s awards. Technically, the awards are based on those submitted episodes only (since not every voter can possibly see every episode of every series nominated), though obviously well-liked shows will generally fare better because the weight of an entire season will weigh in certain nominees’ favor.
After John Laroquette won four straight years for Night Court, he stopped submitting eps for consideration, essentially putting him out of the running. Similarly, Bill Cosby was never nominated for Best Actor the entire run of The Cosby Show for the same reasons, so it has been done before.
Whenever I’ve seen him interviewed he came across as funny and really charming. His looks and mannerisms convince me he’s the long lost lovechild of John Waters and Anjelica Huston (he inherited his dad’s ‘teh gay’, his mom’s thin, and both’s intelligent quirkiness) but didn’t seem arrogant or rude in the least.
So what did people think of the commentator dude. The PC guy provides commentary!
I kinda liked it. There was some pretty funny stuff there. It was a pleasant diversion from the typical boring “Joe Schmo has won this many and been nominated for this many, blah blah blah.” I liked the thing about clown college when Strathairn won… that made me laugh out loud and pause it.
