2010 NFC North Discussion Thread

Things get interesting.

I am really quite happy with how the Packers have looked their last few games, including this weekend. Rodgers is having more success, the defense is doing a great job of stopping the scoring, their special teams have made adjustments, and they’re tied for the division lead. And they’ve looked good in consecutive blowout wins against underacheiving teams. They’ve got a couple of tough games coming up soon though (at Atlanta next weekend and at the Patriots in 4 weeks). I’m happy with where they are. I always worry with a McCarthy team that they will fall prey to overconfidence though.

The Lions are still hopeless on the road (although that flag against Suh for hair pulling was complete and utter crap), and still have a way to go to truly compete. But they’re making strides. Their O Line needs work and they have to keep players healthy. They’re only 2-8, but anyone who expected an overnight transformation was kidding themselves. But there finally seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel.

The Vikings. Oh those glorious, meltdown, bad family reunion style Vikings. I still think they’re too talented a team to simply discount every week, but I think they just saw their shot at the playoffs disappear. It will be fascinating to see if they pack it in and decide to give T.Jax another shot at starting, whether they’ll simply IR Rice and let him have a whole year to heal, and whether they’ll ease Peterson’s role and see what Gerhardt can do. I’m thinking the high drama is over for the most part, but it might be fun to see how much lower they can go.

And the Bears. They have an outstanding defense, a special special teams, and a who knows what the fuck could happen offense. They’re 7-3 and atop the NFC North. Life is good for Bears fans. Hell, there is even talk that Lovie may be in line for a nice contract extension. Who wouldn’t want to see that? They have the Eagles, Patriots, and Jets coming up on their schedule, but they get them all at home (which isn’t lucky, I’m sure). We’ll find out soon if they’re for real. Their defense certainly is, but I don’t think the Bears are a threat to win the NFC Championship.

I just referred to the NFC North as the second worst division in the NFC over the last six seasons, over in the Week 11 thread.

Childress was fired today. Leslie Frazier takes over in a likely audition for the job next year.

I’m hoping for either a Cowboys-like realization of potential or a complete collapse in pursuit of a high draft pick. Anything in between will just add to my misery.

Not exactly a shock. That’s the best news Vikings fans have gotten in weeks.

2nd worst of 4? That’s a bold proclamation? Considering that the last 2 NFC Super Bowl winners come from the presumed 1st and 2nd place candidates and we’ve got the 0-16 Lions on our resume I’m not sure what anyone would waste the ether to argue the point.

I have a stomach churning fear that Leslie Frasier might be the real deal and that he’ll get the Vikes settled down just in time to welcome the Bears to the Dome for one last hurrah in Primetime.

I’d also say 3rd worst in the league. Would that make you grumpier?

You mean we’re not better than the divisions that feature the Colts, Steelers and Patriots either? Very astute.

Rumors now that Zygi is talking to Bill Parcells. Parcells wants to be both HC and HM, though. I say give it to him.

Don’t they have to go through the whole Rooney Rule thing before they can offer the job to anybody?

They do. It’d be a big slap to Leslie Frazier, but then, Zygi may be feeling the need to get someone in who can produce results immediately, and Parcells has a track record of doing so (his stint in Dallas notwithstanding).

Um, isn’t Leslie Frazier African-American? Why would the Rooney Rule apply? Oh - you mean if they interviewed Parcells.

Nevermind.

I have read that Frasier was a hot future coach and someone like the Lions was going to make him an offer. They may have done themselves a service by firing the coach.
I am already looking at the standings and trying to determine how good a draft choice the Lions may get. Of course they will beat the Pats Thursday and upset that scenario.

I am really hoping that teams stay focused on Parcells, Fraizer, Fewell, Lovie , and any others mentioned here, because I would hate to lose Capers to another team. What he has been able to do with the Packers defense this year with all the injuries has been nothing short of amazing. I’d hate to see him go.

Another week is upon us. Your NFC North leading Chicago Bears are going to Detroit to play the Lions. The Lions are a tougher team at home, but with another injury, they’re down to starting Drew Stanton, their 3rd String QB. Not that the Bears are getting lucky again. Stanton can’t beat the Bears, the only hope for the Lions is that the Bears beat themselves.

The Packers, in their throwback jerseys, get to play the 4-7 Niners. I like the Packers chances to keep pace with the Bears. It’s a game the Packers should win.

And the Vikings (funny how quiet Dio is now, isn’t it?), get the Bills. The Bills are a try hard team that may give the Vikings a run for their money. Especially with a gimpy Peterson and no Harvin. I’d love to see the Bills win, but I don’t think it will happen.

Kinda a boring week this week. But every game matters at this point. Go Lions! Go Packers!

The Bears play ugly football. Nobody outside Chicago would back them. The Bears team is also ugly, that is why the league wants them to keep their helmets on at the sidelines and postgame press conferences.

If the Vikings are going to win, I’m glad it’s with TJax having a great game behind the center. Just the idea of Viking fans imagining how this season would have gone without Favre makes me smile.

I think more of us Vikings fans spend the time imagining how the season would have gone had Chilly been fired earlier.

T-Jack threw three interceptions. He was playing against a lousy defense. Vikings fans are not moronic enough to think they would have been better off without Favre. Favre was not the problem this year. A lack of a receiving corps was the problem.

Exactly. Or if he’d been fired before the start of last season. We were kept out of the Superbowl because Chilly put 12 men in a fucking huddle.

I don’t get why Packer fans who spent 17 years with their tongues up number 4’s ass are now so bitter about him. He single-handedly saved that franchise and carried it on his back for the better part of two decades. How about some appreciation? How about some respect for greateness? How abut some respect for the game itself? Turning on Favre the way Packer fans have is just childish. They’re like a girl who got dumped by their boyfriend.
