2010 NFC North Discussion Thread

Same old, same old. The Bears barely eke out a win against an inferior team, the Packers win decisively, and the Lions lose yet another heartbreaker. Only the Vikings mixed it up a bit with a convincing win against the 2-10 Buffalo Bills. The Bears maintain their grip on the division lead, and the Packers keep pace, but are still outside looking in after the Giants and Saints get wins.

That raises a moral condundrum for Vikings fans. We play the Giants and the Bears in our next two games. I don’t want to root against my squad, but I also don’t want to help the Packers. What to do?

Probably the same way Vikings fans hated Favre now what to lick his knob every chance they get.

I never hated Favre. Even when he was with the Packers all those years, I always said if you were a football fan, you had to respect Brett Favre.

Whatever. Root for your team to win above all else.

Speaking as one Packer fan…I always had a love-hate relationship with Favre. He undeniably could be great…but he also could be frustratingly inconsistent. While you got amazing plays which no one else could make, you also got incredibly bone-headed plays, particularly when he seemed to feel that his supporting cast wasn’t up to the task, and he had to do it on his own. You had seasons like '99, '05, and '06, when he threw at least as many interceptions as TDs, and his QB rating was in the pedestrian 70s.

And, yet, the good moments definitely outweighed the bad. Had he hung it up after '07, when he nearly got the Packers back to the Super Bowl, and was the SI Sportsman of the Year, he would still be a venerated icon in Wisconsin, obviously.

A lot of Packer fans were already tired of “Favre-watch”, and the annual will-he-or-won’t-he-come-back dithering, by '08. I think it’s one thing when a player spends an off-season (or maybe two) debating if he should retire. But, Favre’s been playing this game for at least 5 years now. OTOH, there are definitely some who say, “look at all he’s done, he’s a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame, he should be allowed to do whatever he wants, on his own schedule” (and, frankly, there’s a vocal minority of fans in Wisconsin who strongly feel that Favre is the aggrieved party in all this, and loathe Ted Thompson for driving Favre out of town).

It also doesn’t help that Favre made no bones about his strong desire to go play for a team which is, arguably, the Packers’ biggest rival in recent years…and then, after the one year with the Jets, seemed to orchestrate things so that he could get to the Vikings.

BTW, I really liked the Packers throwback uniforms. It seems to be harboring quite mixed reactions, however.

I liked them better than the “newer” blue and gold throwbacks (Hutson era)…at least the circle w/ number was unique. Perhaps it would have looked better if the circle was as small as it was on the original jersey, but I’m guessing that would have run afoul of current NFL jersey regs. The “Acme Packers” brand thing was a little bit of a headscratcher, though, “Acme” was long in the past by 1929, which is the year the jersey’s were supposed to reflect.

This.

The Lions are almost sold out. that means I don’t have to listen to it on the radio.
As usual the Lions will lose in a close game.

Reminds me of the joke I heard in the '80s, when the Packers stunk:

It’s late in the season, and a Packer season ticket holder decides he’s tired of going to the games and watching the Pack lose. So, he drives downtown, parks his car, and sticks his four tickets for that weekend’s game under the car’s windshield wiper, figuring that some passerby will take the tickets.

He comes back to his car an hour later, to find 20 Packer tickets under the wiper.

What a tough weekend for me fanwise. Of course I get to root for the Packers, which is nice, but I am also going to be rooting for the Vikings and the Patriots, two teams I generally dislike.

These games will be huge. I think the Packers will make mincemeat out of the Lions, but that Suh guy scares me, especially if he lines up over our smallish center. The Bellicheat v. Martz will likewise be fascinating to watch, but I think the Pats will win handily. And (gulp), Go Vikings!!

Lions will beat the Packers. It won’t even be hard.

If the Lions DO beat the Packers, I can guess what part of you would be hard.

Best of Luck. Tell Suh not to tackle anyone, he might get another fine.

Or tell Calvin not to catch the ball, there will be a rule against that too.

Clearly, a third win on the season would get us Detroit fans physically excited.

If you become physically excited for four quarters or longer, consult a physician.

I thought it was longer than 4 quarters.

That’s what she …

Oh, never mind.

The Lions trench workers, the defensive and offensive lines won for them today. Stanton is a 3rd string QB on a very bad team. He showed that yesterday. Two starts in 4 years. He ran in college but was hurt a few times. What Detroit does not need is another fragile QB who is injury prone. Especially since running is his best talent.
The Lions hurt Green Bay but the Bears getting crushed mitigated the damage.
