2010 NFC North Discussion Thread

Believe me, I know. I’ve listened to Packer fans for a better part of a decade say the same things. You would think that without Favre, the Packers would have been blowing goats in a Tijuana bar for beer money. And the Vikings with their 10-6 record the previous year and a great run defense and Adrian Peterson would have been selling their plasma for crack.

Look, he’s a great quarterback. He also is a quarterback who can easily cost your team a game. When you have Brett Favre, that’s what you get. You hope that he’ll be Good Brett and not Bad Brett.

Enjoy him. Cause we have Aaron Rodgers.

You guys definitely made the right decision for your team. So did we. This year and going forward, we would rather have Aaron Rogers, too. I think we all understand that. What exactly are we arguing about?

I forget.

Speak for yourself. I’d sooner have Spurgeon Wynn back starting for the Vikings than Aaron Rodgers. I’d rather start my 90 year old Sicilian grandmother. I’d rather draft any random crackhead off the street. I’d rather sign Joey Harrington.

Its like a tea partier only in this case it is for football instead of politics.

Glad you have no influence whatsoever on the Vikings’ personnel choices. We’ll get Rodgers once GB pisses him off.

A T-formation partier?

Well, another week down. Packers looked great in an easy win against Buffalo. Clay Matthews had 3 sacks. He’s looking great. Jenkins got one early also, and they got two picks (Morgan Burnett got his first!) off a horrible quarterback. The offense struggled a bit early, and the running game without Grant is questionable (I’m guessing they get Marshawn Lynch soon), but the offense started clicking late in the game and made it a blowout.

The Bears win the turnover battle again, and get a nice win on the road against the Cowboys. Cutler looked impressive again, and the O Line only gave up one sack. Romo looked like crap, which helped. The Bears’ running game is still sad, but Culter lit it up. The defense got the turnovers, but did give up 410 yards of offense.

The Lions, despite a late comeback attempt, lost. Jahvid Best had a great game, but the defense is … highly suspect. They got 4.5 sacks, but couldn’t stop Michael Vick from looking like a real NFL quarterback, which isn’t easy. Still, they didn’t roll over and give up, so that’s a step in the right direction.

And… the Vikings lost. 4 Favre turnovers put a big smile on my face. And watching Childress refuse to let him throw the ball in the red zone with the game on the line, instead running Peterson 6 straight times (including a huge goal line stop on 4th down) was also beautiful. The Viking defense played pretty well, getting a couple sacks, holding the Dolphins to 226 yards total offense, and getting two huge fumbles to keep them in the game. But then it was Favre’s turn. He may not make it through the year, whether healthy or not.

Next week. Monday night. Packer vs. Bears. I’m thinking about trying to see if a doctor can put me in a coma for a week, because waiting for that game will be tough.

Thank you Favre, that was a real treat.

I didn’t think we’d be seeing the battle for the NFC Norris crown next Monday but I’m glad it worked out that way. It will be an interesting match. The Bears have gotten a pair of floundering but talented teams, and this week’s win in Dallas was sweet. Though we must consider that Dallas may simply suck so maybe it’s not as nice a win as it looks on paper, there were a shit ton of Bears fans in Dallas afterall, it sounded like a virtual home game. Green Bay hasn’t played anyone yet so perhaps they’ll get a wake up call in Soldier Field. Hopefully Cutler’s Prime-Time issues are resolved.

Once again, Yay Favre!

DtC blaming the refs in 3…2…1…

A couple things I forgot to mention:

  1. The Brian Bulaga era has begun in Green Bay. Clifton has looked horrible this year, whether it’s his knee or his age, he hasn’t played well at all. Bulaga got in there in the second quarter and, by most accounts, had an OK game (one false start penalty). I am a tad bit worried about him facing Peppers in his first start (IF he starts) next week.

  2. I fully expect the Vikings to trade for Vincent Jackson this week. With Harvin being injured and Favre being a whiny little bitch, I’m guessing they’ll trade for him and hope to get him in to learn the system before he can play in the 5th game. There may be more cat and mouse as AJ Smith tries to gauge how desperate teams are, but I’m guessing the Vikings will be the buyer he wants.

  3. I also expect the Packers to go after Lynch, but Thompson is very leery of trading for vets, especially those with issues like Marshawn’s. But the Packers’ running game wasn’t impressive at all, but Lynch didn’t look all that special himself. But Lynch and Rodgers played together at California and although I’d rather have Fred Jackson, these teams might be able to get something done.

  4. I’m still smiling about Favre’s game.

What more could i ask for. Cold bass ale at my bar… good conversation with some knowledgeable football fans… and Brett Farve looking like an old ass man and throwin picks… Clay Matthews is the truth… even this Bears fan has to love the dude who WALKED on at USC and is just kickin ass like his old man used to back in the day
Lions hung in… I bet SF wonders if they should have just eaten the money and kept HILL… Loved watching Vick play like back in the day… its a Vick who’s serious about his craft is older and smarter and has two years on his legs fresh…
Bears Packers… this is gonna be sweet… i need to see Peppers knockin Rodgers on his ass for the Beloved to have a chance… I like our secondary better than last year for sure…

Viqueens don’t make the playoffs… my early prediction… Brett goes off on his tractor and Chilly may or may not return…

Well, until he pulls a Cushing.

Latest on Vikings/Vincent Jackson:

Yahoo sports.

“The San Diego Chargers have been offered a second-round pick and a conditional pick in 2011 by the Minnesota Vikings for wide receiver Vincent Jackson, three sources said Tuesday, but that deal looks dead because the Chargers have asked for a second- and third-round pick for 2011.”

I was amused by this:

“The indication from two sources is that Jackson may structure a long-term contract with another team that includes very little money in the first year, a key component for how compensatory draft picks are determined.”

A lot of big dicks being waved and Fuck You Too’s going on. Such animosity among multi-millionaires.

I just heard on the radio that the Vikings have signed Hank Basket. [Sigh]

That’s not the droid we’re looking for.

Not the prettiest, but we’ll take this victory over the Lions. It was great to see AP in there on 3rd downs, as well as his career-long 80-yd touchdown run.

The Bye week couldn’t come early enough for us this year. This needs to be a two-week training camp for Favre and his receivers in preparation for the Jets game. We have a brutal October schedule (@NYJ, DAL, @GB, @NE) and realistically should be happy winning 2 of those games. A 3-4 start is very much in the card for us, so we’re going to need Chicago and Green Bay to stumble a bit and lose games they’ve penciled in as wins. Looking at the rest of our schedule, it’s hard to be all that optimistic for anything north of a 9-7 finish.

As I don’t want the dairy team to run away with the division, I’ll be rooting for Chicago tonight. That said, I picked GB in the SDMB Pick 'em league.

Boy it should woulda been great to have Favre there for training camp and off season workouts, wouldn’t it have been? Just imagine, had Favre had the surgery right after the season, had monthes to recuperate, and had shown up and practiced with the team and these receivers, the Vikes might be 3-0 now. Shame that.

The next few games will be very telling for the Vikes. I think the team needs to change it’s identity from having Favre wing it around like it was last year to a play tough D/pound it out eat the clock running team. Having Taylor to spell All Day would be nice, but he’s not, so they need Gerhardt to get going.

Always good to hedge your bets.

Who was the guy who threw 29 picks in 2005? Oh yeah, Drama Mamma himself, Brett Favre.

Who’s 3-0 and plays for the ONLY UNDEFEATED TEAM IN THE NFC?

Why Jay Cutler of course.

Not to mention that Baby Brett holds the NFL record for picks. I’m sure if there were a record for how many playoff games were CHOKED away by stupid egotistical picks, it would be Favre.

We know who holds the record for playoff games CHOKED away by “kick 6”.

That one is Erin Rodgers.

Yes, Jay Cutler has never choked away a playoff game, that’s for sure.
