I’m good with the schism, but I’d rather have Kyle Wilson than a few extra picks from the Broncos. We definitely need help in the secondary.
Suh is a no brainer. Obvious pick, probably going to have a great career. I like the fact that Detroit took a gamble to move back in to the first round and get another player, but I’m not sure Best is the player they should have taken. I don’t really like small backs, and I think the graphic said he weighs 199.
So the 5 picks for the Lions to have waited weren’t safe enough for Best? The Vikings could want him, but if they did, they’d have taken him. Colts? Saints? Rams? Bah.
I like the pick. I like Best, but we’d have been better with Sergio Kindle, I think.
There were plenty of good running backs for Detroit to take. I don’t think they should have moved up. They have lots of needs to fill. Giving away draft choices will not help.
I think my Saints would be better off with Kindle than the CB we drafted.
At least your QB isn’t on the cover of Madden.
Missed almost the entire draft. So let me get this straight: Denver gave up a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th to take a QB in the first while they have Orton? And not only that, they pass on Clausen to take Tebow?! Don’t get me wrong, I like what I hear about Tebow as a person, and if this were the 80’s, there’s no reason that he couldn’t follow Bernie Kosar’s career path. But unless things have drastically changed, he throws a hideous, ugly, slow ball. And unlike Vick/Young, he doesn’t have the speed to make guys take bad angles when he gets frustrated and tries to run. McDaniels seems pretty bright; I penciled the Broncos in for 3 wins last year, and see where that got me. But drafting Tebow in the first round looks like one of the silliest damn things I’ve seen in awhile.
For the Texans, well, SEC Guy on the local sports talk station will be ecstatic. All I can say is that Kareem Jackson better be as good or better than McCourty or Wilson. It’s not a bad pick, but seems like a bit of a reach. Also, I wonder if they’re going to go S in 2nd round (Morgan Burnett) or RB (Dwyer, Tate, Gerhart). Were Houston not such a ridiculously easy town to get in trouble in, I’d toy with the idea of dangling the Texans’ 3rd to Buffalo for Marshawn Lynch. Or to Dallas for Marion Barber.
Very surprised that Dallas went after Bryant. What, Williams/Austin/Crayton weren’t enough receivers? They did cut their starting LT and FS, so naturally, they add a headcase WR… OK.
I’d really like to see them look for Washington, Wang or Veldheer in the 2nd-3rd.
Also surprised the Jets went CB when they already had Revis and spent a ton for Cromartie. Would’ve liked to see them target Hughes. Instead, Schaub gets to see him twice a year. Great.
Tomorrow should be interesting.
Even as a Gator fan/alum, that Tebow pick is a bit shocking, especially seeing what they gave up. Wrong place/wrong time, so it’s probably a lose/lose proposition.
What is the best of the rest for the next round, ye olde Draught Gurus?
Chatting with my friend about who the Giants might get as their pick was approaching, I said, “really, though, as long as they don’t take Pierre-Paul I’ll be fine with it.” Ugh. The guy started 7 games, and had 6.5 career sacks. This is like when they drafted Sinorice Moss in the 2nd Round despite the fact that he wasn’t, you know, good at college football.
Other LOL picks included:
C.J. Spiller to Buffalo – You can have a really good running game without a special RB, and w/ Lynch/Jackson Buffalo’s RB situation is more than adequate. Fill a real need.
Alualu to JAX – Just too early. If he’s your guy then take what you can get and move down; if you’re so much in love with him that you’re not willing to take the chance that he’s not there in 10 or so picks … well, you shouldn’t be.
Ryan Mathews to SD – See, Spiller above, though this isn’t as bad since RB is a notable need on an otherwise sacked team.
Brandon Graham to the Iggles – I don’t have much of an opinion on Graham, but they should’ve done the obvious thing and takes Earl Thomas.
Tim Tebow, naturally.
Are you seriously worried that curse fairies are going to break the laws of physics and blow up some ligament on your quarterback?
That’s a weird comparison, because it would be harder to find two prospects who were more different than Tebow and Kosar. Kosar was a totally immobile pocket passer who, while he had an unusual delivery, was very accurate and still had a pretty good arm. His delivery was unconventional but didn’t need to be redone for the NFL - sort of like Philip Rivers but more exaggerated.
I also find it strange that people keep saying that the Broncos gave up so much to get Tebow. They gave up little. The trade is:
Broncos get
#25 overall
#119 overall (4th)
Ravens get
#43 overall (2nd)
#70 overall (3rd)
#114 overall (4th)
So the Broncos moved up from #43 to #25 and barely moved in the 4th round, so essentially what it took to get from a mid-round 2nd to a first rounder was their third round pick, which is really quite reasonable. I think the mental mistake people may be making is thinking that the Broncos are “giving up” that second round pick as part of the payment, when really the deal is swapping that mid-second rounder for a late first, with the other picks being payment. And since the 4th rounder is only moving down 4 spots, that’s not even significant.
The equivelant would be looking at where the Patriots gave up the #24 and #113 to move up to #22, and then saying “they gave up a first round pick to get that #22!” … no, not really - they swapped first rounders and it cost them the #113 to do it. I think in this case somehow people are forgetting that because the picks they’re swapping are in different rounds.
Did the Lions really have to give up anything to get Best? It seems to me that there was a reasonable chance he’d still be around by their second round pick and if not, running backs really aren’t that hard to find. Besides that, the guy has had injury issues. Dumb move, in my opinion.
Well, Like I said I’m not sure of the move, But there was a good bit of chatter that the Colts liked best, He would have fit in well there as just another change-up weapon. He might have gone 31st.
You’ve no room to bitch about anything pro-football related. Your team won the Super Bowl. You can’t complain for 5 years.
Best rushing defenses in the Pac 10, with Best’s rushing stats:
Arizona State - 18 carries, 63 yards 3.5 ypc
California - his team
Oregon State - 9 carries, 29 yards 3.2 ypc - injured
Arizona - DNP
USC - 14 carries, 47 yards, 3.4 ypc
Oregon - 16 carries, 55 yards, 3.4 ypc
Worst Rushing Defenses
Washington State - 13 carries, 159 yards, 12.2 ypc.
Washington - DNP
UCLA - 18 carries, 102 yards, 5.7 ypc.
Add in a couple amazing games against Eastern Washington, Minnesota, and Maryland.
The defenses in the NFL are much more like the USC’s and Arizona States than the Eastern Washingtons of the world, and those kinds of games are going to be fewer and far between. His pedestrian ypc against good defensive teams concerns me. I am not umsympathetic to the idea that they were stacking the box to stop him, that certainly is a part of his poor statisical showing against them.
All told, I think Jahvid Best is an occassionally electric player who, against weak teams, can have great games. But he is, at Best (snicker) a change of pace back in the NFL who can handle a dozen carries or so a game. He’s not an every down back. Considering that, and his showing against good teams, and I think it was a mistake for the Lions, a team with some many holes to fill, to throw away draft picks to move up to get a part time player with injury risks. If he’s there for you in the second round, fine. But I think they got spooked when the Chargers moved up to get Ryan Matthews and let the fear of not getting him overwhelm their judgment.
Spillers’ stats against the best defenses in his division:
North Carolina - DNP
Boston College - 17 caries, 77 yards, 4.5 ypc
Miami - 14 carries, 81 yards, 5.8 ypc
Viriginia Tech - DNP
NC State - 18 carries, 97 yards, 5.4 ypc
And the worst:
Florida State - 22 carries, 165 yards, 7.5 ypc.
Viriginia - 19 carries, 58 yards, 3.1 ypc.
Wake Forest - 9 carries, 106 yards, 11.8 ypc
Spiller, against the best defenses in his conference, had almost a yard, sometimes yard and a half, better ypc than Best. There may be some issue with whether the PAC 10 or the ACC are better defenses against the rush, but that’s still a huge gap. AFAIK, Spiller also doesn’t have an injury risk either, and also is better on special teams returning kicks and punts.
Dont get me wrong, I think Spiller too is more of a change of pace back and was a reach at 9 (and just plain stupid too for the Bills). But I think he’s a lot better than Best.
Agreed.
Disagreed. I don’t know what makes Spiller that much better than Best. I mean, come on. Look at the man’s last name! He’s clearly (the) Best!
Well, he’s no Kevin Fucking Smith.
He’s not THAT much better than Best, but he’s able to do more against tough defenses, he’s better as a receiver, he’s better on special teams.
Spiller also has a 286.4 college passer rating compared to Best’s 0.000. So there!!!
You would go bringing other facets of the game to bolster your argument.
And no, he’s no Kevin Fucking Smith. He’s been pretty underwhelming so far.
Picks that we got right in the mock:
1 (1) Rams - Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma - Omniscient
2 (2) Lions - Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska - Least Original User Name Ever
3 (3) Buccaneers - Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma - garygnu
5 (5) Chiefs - Eric Berry, S, Tennessee
7 (7) Browns - Joe Haden, CB, Florida - Senor Beef
16 (16) Tennessee Titans - Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech
21 (21) Bengals - Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma - It’s not Rocket Surgery
Picks that were close:
Trent Williams and Russel Okung went a pick apart, but in the opposite order.
SD got Mathews with their first rounder, but way higher in the round
Spiller and Pierre-Paul were one slot off.
49ers got Iupati at their #13 pick instead of #17
All in all a pretty good mock round - only a few picks were way off.
The Lions are looking for a Barry Sanders. Best is explosive and the best chance for that. But that bar is too high for mortals to attempt to jump. Barry did not believe in getting injured. Best has been hurt.
