2010 NFL Draft Thread: April 22nd - 24th

LOL. Is there a Willie Brown in this year’s draft?

Is Reshad Jones still on the board? The Browns took some other safety, but I thought Jones was regarded as a 3rd round type prospect and I didn’t see him go anywhere.

Just went down. With him and Asante gone I’m not sure there’s another draft worthy Safety in this class. Myron Rolle is interesting but I don’t know if he’s got the nuts to play in the NFL and the year off isn’t going to help.

Jason Campbell traded to the Raiders for a 4th round pick in 2012. Weird. I thought the Redskins absolutely could have gotten more value than that for him, just about everyone agreed that a 2010 3rd rounder was a fair price, I wonder if they turned down offers prior to the draft that were better than this one.

Yeah, but a Rhodes Scholar could be a good influence in the locker room for certain teams. The Bengals sure could use it.

For a fourth in 2012 you might as well keep him from when McNabb gets split in twain.

Maybe in 2006. Perhaps you meant to say the Steelers?

Another Bears pick on it’s way. I’m hoping they look for help on offense here. Depth and a developmental guy at RB is my first choice. I think it’s the deepest position left, I’m not entirely sure which guy is best but there is a lot of production sitting on the table still. A developmental QB may not be a bad idea with Pike and Lefevour still dangling around out there. They gotta get more help on the offensive line and an OG or OT would be a welcome addition. Both positions are shallow at this point and getting a guy who could play both would be ideal.

Jonathan Dwyer, Dace Richardson, Tony Pike, LeGarrett Blount, Drew Davis all are decent options.

Saints got a steal in that center, Tennant.

And my 49ers keep up the theme of “hit people in the mouth” and “physical with an ‘F’” with power back Anthony Dixon, who I had going much higher than the 6th Round. He hits me as a Mike Alstott type, and he and Frank Gore could be on the field together in some formations and keep a passing option available out of both halves of the backfield.

I’m surprised Selvish Capers is still available.

EDIT: Scratch that Alstott comparison, after watching some more tape, the guy IS Frank Gore with an extra 5 inches and 20 pounds. Wow.

Holy crap, the Bears actually took a guy I was hoping for!!! You gotta be kidding me!

And the 49ers take a guy I don’t like. Or, rather, a guy I don’t think they need. Tight end Nate Byham is considered a blocking specialist. There is no need for a team to waste a roster spot on a blocking tight end when they have Vernon Davis and Delanie Walker. If there’s a play that calls for a blocking tight end, just send in a backup lineman and have him report as eligible.

At least it’s only a 6th Rounder. I would have liked a WR or Syd’Quan Thompson/

That’s gotta make me a contender for the most spectacularly inaccurate mock draft award. 0-3, and not even in the same zip code as the actual picks.

In Round 4 we finally take a DT, Al Wood from LSU. In Round 5, we took Matt Tennant, C, BC.

Your example is unfortunate, in a kind of funny way. During those two 8-8 years when Minnesota was #1 running and against the run and went 8-8 anyway, Drew Brees – who you specifically name as an example of the new paradigm – went 7-9 and 8-8. The third year both teams met each other in overtime of the conference championship game, so the specific examples you chose would seem to imply that neither paradigm is better than the other.

True to form, but smarter about when to do it, the Raiders actually DID pick up Bruce Campbell AND Jacoby Ford in the 4th Round.

It’s amazing how predictable Al “Gollum” Davis is, even as he prides himself on being unpredictable.

I’m actually a bit excited about this Lefevour pick. Early in the draft process I was really high on the kid. Throughout the Combine and predraft process I cooled on him a bit due to concerns about his size and ability to play under center. Sill, in the 6th round he’s a fantastic value. The Bears are very smart to get depth at the QB position and to give Cutler a reason to buckle down in the years to come. Martz might just be able to develop Lefevour into a trade asset one day if Cutler blossoms the way we hope and if Cutler implodes we might have a guy we can turn to. In any case it should help prevent us from returning to the ways of the last 50 years where we’re a perpetually QB starved team in the near term. That he’s a hometown kid being interviewed in front of a Payton jersey just makes it all the more fun to cheer for him.

Damn, the Steelers picked up Dwyer 1 pick before the Rams could. now who the hell is Eugene Sims and why would you take him with Selvie and Lang still available?

It’s crazy to me that Selvie is still available. If Dwyer can get into an NFL strength training regimen he could be a real steal here. Him and Mendenhall make a very nice tandem if they want to pound the ball.

There are a few draft war rooms that are lucky that I cannot use the Force to cock-punch everyone in the room.

How do you mean? Reese had a phenomenal draft in 2007, with something like 7 of 8 choices contributing to the Superbowl-winning playoff run in a significant way. (Aaron Ross, Steve Smith, Kevin Boss, Ahmad Bradshaw, etc…)

His 2008 draft wasn’t terrible either, with Kenny Philips, Terrell Thomas, and Mario Manningham.

One point of concern for me is that while Ernie Accorsi may have struggled in the first roudn, he was a master in the 4th round and beyond. Looking over Reese’s picks, his picks in the 4th round and later haven’t really panned out longterm. No David Diehl on his resume.

I think you should reread that quote.
