2012 College Football Week 5

Not a huge weekend for college fans, but there are a few interesting matchups.

The feature game of the afternoon for non-SEC fans is probably Mich St hosting Ohio St. I’ve picked Ohio St (The Druidess adds “Go Buckeyes!”).

For SEC fans, the afternoon game is Tennessee at Georgia. I expect Georgia to win this one easily, but anything can happen in the SEC.

The evening game of note in the SEC is Ole Miss at Alabama. I expect another easy win and possible blowout. Ole Miss is not very good, and Bama is borderline awesome, especially on defense.

Non-SEC fans may enjoy Texas at Oklahoma St. I think there is some potential for an upset here, but I would not bet on it.

My Bully-dogs at Miss State have a bye this week.

Heh…this one turned into a shootout between the hedges. Tennessee looked good, hung with Georgia until late in the game. Turnovers on their last three drives killed them, letting the Other Bulldogs hang on for the win, 51-44.

Upset of the day so far is Washington over Stanford, 17-13.

The Druidess is pleased, as her Buckeyes beat Michigan St 17-16.

That actually happened on Thursday night.

WTF is going on with LSU?

LSU has been like this for the last few years. I don’t think it means anything, they seem to (in general, not always) perform similar to the competition that week and then towards the end of the game if it’s close they pull away.

They clearly have a lot of talent, but I’ve noticed this pattern. Not sure if it’s the coach or what.

Er…um…what I meant was…uh…oh Hell…I saw the score today, assumed the game happened today.

How 'bout Geno Smith at WVU? Insane numbers today. Stephen Morris throws for 560 yards and 5 tds for Miami, and he’s not even one of the top 2 performers for qbs today (the 2nd being Baylor’s qb).

It were ugly, but it were a win. FSU gets out of Tampa with a win. The Bulls were never really a threat to take this game, but FSU simply couldn’t put them away for good. Might have been a bit of a let-down game. Wolfpack up next.

mkecane, Jesus, did your boys remember to bring the defense this game? It’s not like they missed the plane, you were at home! Still, don’t like to see Morris doing that kind of stuff when we’re headed your way in a few…

What’s this “defense” thing you’re talking about? I saw a stat that Miami has now won its last 100 games when scoring 40+ points, dating back to Doug Flukies Hail Mary in ‘84. Defense? We don’t need no stinkin’ defense! 3-0 in conference. VPI lost again (non-conference), so the Coastal Division certainly looks like it’s there for the taking. On to Chicago for a big game with the Irish.

USF raises their game for the Big 3. They’re such a pointless program. From the point of view of the Big 3, just win and stay healthy when playing USF.

Before the official rankings come out, here’s what they will be working with:

This has been Oregon’s modus operandi for the last few years. Play rope-a-dope for the 1st half, and then come out of the locker room, put the pedal to the metal, and it winds up not being close. I turned on last night’s Oregon - Wazzu game at halftime, and they were talking about what a huge potential upset it might be because WSU was only down 1 score. Silly people.

AP rankings are out, and Florida’s remaining schedule has the following teams on it:
#4 LSU next week at home
#6 South Carolina on October 20th at home
#5 Georgia on October 27 in Jacksonville
#3 Florida State on November 24 in Tallahassee

If they win out (unlikely, but stay with me here), they would then most likely face:
#1 Alabama in the SEC championship

If they win that (probably unlikely), they would most likely face:
#2 Oregon

So there is a slight possibility that Florida could face all of the current top 6 ranked teams in the country.
