I didn’t see a thread started yet, so figured it would be a good time to get one going.
Most drafts will be taking place here in about a month, so feel free to use this thread as a place for recruitment.
I think one of the big story-lines for the upcoming season is wither or not the young Qb’s that had breakout seasons last year can repeat. I think (imho) that most of their teams are setup for success in the near term. Obviously, RGIII & Luck are the real deal, but Qb’s like Kaepernick & Wilson success’ might have been products of already talented teams.
How much will Brady’s stats suffer because of losing Welker, a prolonged recovery for Gronk, and Hernandez receiving the death penalty?
Luckily, rooting for the Black Hawks and laughing at the Heat-haters got me through the horrible time from the NFL draft through now. I miss NFL football.
My early, underdeveloped thoughts on the QB position is that after Rodgers and Brees, it’s very deep. Unless I get one of those two in the late second round, I’m waiting awhile, because I can find a solid starter later. But if I take a guy like Newton, Kaepernick, or RGIII, I’m making sure I have a backup quick, because I think defenses will be hitting read/option QB’s every chance they get, and those guys may not last the year.
I think Kaepernick’s stats drop, Luck’s improve with less turnovers, and RGIII’s suffer a big drop as he either gets reinjured or stops running so much. I love me some Russell Wilson, and I think he’s less likely to take a lot of hits, so I think he’ll improve too. And I wouldn’t draft any rookie QB except maybe Matt Barkley as a flier in a dynasty league.
And Brady will be fine, but not amazing lime he can be. Yes, I know he had an OK 2006 with crap receivers, but it wasn’t even close to his best statistical seasons. I have him lumped in with Newton, Manning, Luck, and just slightly above Wilson, RGIII, Kaepernick, and Ryan.
I agree that Brees and Rodgers are the Top-tier, but disagree with lumping Brady in with Newton and Luck. I think that the 2nd tier consists of Brady, Manning, E. Manning, with a dropoff before getting to the Luck & Newton’s of the league.
I admit to being high on Luck, but Newton, thanks to his rushing yards and TD’s, is certainly in the second tier. And Eliminated wasn’t even in the top 10 last year, there is no way he should be up there with his brother, Newton and Brady.
I’m not getting a great read on the second tier WRs. After guys like Megatron, Bryant, Green, Marshall and Jones are gone, there seem to be just a bunch of clones. Here’s where Yahoo has them, plus some comments:
Demarius Thomas: With Welker incoming, he’s going to have his looks decrease. And Manning really spreads the ball around - I just can’t trust the 6th WR slot to a Bronco this year.
**Larry Fitzgerald: **Injuries, Carson Palmer, being in Arizona, etc. are all question marks that make me just want to pass.
**Victor Cruz: **Frankly, he may be the most likely in this group of hitting 1,000 yards and 8 TDs. Roddy White: Another guy in a situation with a ton of passing options. I never trust guys on a team with Tony Gonzalez, as he’s capable of being the safest safety valve of all time. Plus, he’s the #2 WR on his own team. Randall Cobb: Anyone else dislike drafting any Packers WRs since the hey-days of Donal Driver?
**Dwayne Bowe: **Well, Alex Smith is certainly an improvement over the past KC QBs of late. I like his upside - but that’s not typically something you talk about in this tier. Andre Johnson: How the mighty have fallen. I love Johnson, but the Texans have kept the ball on the ground and safely out of Matt Schaub’s hands pretty effectively. I think this is too low a spot for him, and he’ll rise up in the next few weeks.
Oh yahoo, how are you supposed to join a custom league by number? The add a team/custom league game just brings up a grid with available public custom leagues, but as far as I can see, no way to enter a custom league number. Anyone know?
My strategy, which has resulted in various degrees of success, is to not reach for a QB. I will take one as early as round 3 if I perceive there’s good value, but usually end up waiting. But in leagues with 8-12 players, there will be numerous starting QBs available on the wire (or late in drafts), as opposed to starting (or even capable backup) RBs, which are never on the wire.
I saw on Yahoo! that you have to get an elite QB early this year or you’re stuck with one of the next tier. I personally think using last season’s results as a basis for drafting strategy is a poor one; for every year with a dominant top tier of quarterbacks, there’s another with a bunch of good options you don’t have to reach for.
I’m usually coming up with something new every year to try, some new twist on fantasy football, and this year I’m seeing if there’s interest in a money league. If you’re interested, post there.
It wasn’t really destroyed. He had partial tears of the LCL and ACL. Compare to Daunte Culpepper or AP who had complete tears of all three cruciate ligaments.
I graduate from law school and take the bar in about a year. Will prospective employers (a) be impressed that I was able to compete in five fantasy football leagues while working full time and graduating law school cum laude, or (b) expect me to spend my workdays tinkering with my lineups?
Don’t worry. I’m not really going to tell them. I just wonder if one could analogize the skills required to successfully compete in fantasy sports to real-world responsibilities.
Bah. I won HHM twice in a row and won the Dynasty league in its first year before I was in law school. Plus I’ve made the playoffs in my money league five of the last six years.
