I just looked at the West Point lineup, and maybe I’m missing something: leaving aside the positions like cornerback or free safety, where being comparatively small and quick is pretty much the name of the game, it seems that Army’s quarterback had the choice of throwing to his 6’1", 224-lb wide receiver or his 6’3", 258-lb tight end – all while, y’know, his 6’5", 295-lb lineman was blocking for him.
So – how much bigger do you figure those seniors need to be, to equal Navy?
(And, yeah, there’s apparently a 6’4", 318-lb underclassman on West Point’s roster as well, but leave that aside for a moment.)
If there’s a death in the immediate family , maybe I can understand. But this smells more of sour grapes and being a lousy teammate. If Maguire goes down in the early part of the game, then FSU is doomed and likely embarrassed on national TV.
If it was me, I’d be Brett Favre and play after the death of an immediate family member. The extremely vague ‘personal reasons’ excuse sounds more like his third cousin’s cat died. I know he’s pissed about losing the starting job and the disappointing season. He should still man up and be a supportive backup QB.
I hear ya, dalej42. If they had just said “He’s not playing because of a death in the family” I doubt anyone would have batted an eye. But to say “personal reasons” and then hint at a death in the family is necessarily opaque.
Ezekiel Elliott cited for driving without a license and driving on a suspended license. I assume , being a star, he will play in the Fiesta Bowl. However, Urban Meyer did set a precedent by suspending Adolphus Washington for soliciting a prostitute. I don’t think Washington should have been suspended for a silly infraction such as soliciting. It’ll be interesting to see what, if anything, the Buckeyes do.
For those of you who missed the Armed Forces Bowl because it was mid-day Tuesday and you have jobs or some dumb excuse like that…it was what you’d expect.
Neither defense was very good at preventing the other team from doing what they do best. But Air Force committed more mistakes, lost their best safety early to a targeting call, and had no answer for Jared Goff.
Goff had 6 TD passes by the 3rd quarter … think about that for a minute … and Cal coasted to a 55-36 victory. Bears WR Kenny Lawler (3 TD catches) said that he told the Cal coaches “we can just run by these guys”, and they did.
Goff will undoubtedly turn pro, so he went out in style.
I know that comparing scores is never a prudent thing to do, but I do like the fact that Baylor (still without a real QB) was able to run roughshod over the Tar Heels. I don’t know if it means anything for my Sooners or not but at least the Bears didn’t get clobbered.
Bama looks pretty tough. And I just realized there weren’t any posts about the Heisman here this year.
WTF happened on that last TD run by Henry? The guy chasing him just kind of somersaulted away. The announcers called it a powerful stiffarm, but I replayed it several times, and I didn’t see any sign of Henry exerting much power. Maybe he’s a master of aikido.
