So, we decided we’re going to do 24 this season, and finally got around to watching the first ep last night. But there were a couple points that were not explained that we probably need to have watched season 1 to know. Would someone mind filling me in? I don’t need a detailed recap of the entire first season, but a couple sentences would be great.
What happened to Jack’s wife? I saw in the Ep 1 thread that she was killed during the first season, but it didn’t say why she was killed or who the Nina person that killed her had to do with her.
Why does Jack not trust the CTU guys (George? I think) Is this related to question 1?
Jack, his daughter, the President, and some of the CTU guys are returning characters, I presume - are there any others that have shown up already that it might be helpful for us to know about?
Nina was Jack’s #2 at CTU last year. She turned out to be a mole who, in the course of trying to escape from CTU headquarters after her cover was blown, killed Jack’s wife. Jack caught her before she could escape.
Yep. Twice last year, Jack’s family was attacked while under the protection of CTU. The first time was at a safe house (wife and daughter escaped), and the second time was when Nina killed wife right inside CTU headquarters. George was in charge.
That’s it thus far.
We still don’t know who exactly Nina works for. It was thought that she was working for the Serbs trying to kill Jack and Palmer last year, but she made it clear that she works for someone else.
That’s a broad group of questions, but I’ll give it a shot and let others fill in where necessary:
Nina was a mole in CTU and she killed Jack’s wife, Terri. Jack and Nina had an affair while Jack and his wife were separated, thought that’s not why Nina killed Terri Bauer. She killed her because Terri stumbled in on Nina as she was contacting her handlers. The show never revealed who Nina is working for, but she was arrested shortly after she killed Terri.
Jack is obviously upset about what happened to his wife. He also thinks that George didn’t do enough to protect his family when the bad guys were after them.
Tony Almeida, who works in CTU, was a character last season. He was dating Nina and the show often hinted that he was the mole. He wasn’t, obviously, and he turned out to be a very decent guy.
Jack and President Palmer know each other from when Palmer was on the Senate Intelligence Committee and was instrumental in ordering Jacks’ team to kill Victor Drazen (a bad guy from season 1). The two have a sense of respect and loyalty for one another.
She was murdered by a woman named Nina that worked with Jack, but turned out to be a Serbian mole named Yelena. Terri (the wife) was killed because she discovered that Nina was a spy.
George constantly lied to Jack during the first season to try to keep him on track. Jack was told that his wife and daughter were safe, when in fact they were on the run after the “safe house” they were in was comprimised.
Tony (at CTU) is also returning. He was involved with Nina last season and may still be scarred from the fact that she was a mole.
Nina was Jack’s second-in-command at CTU. She also had had an affair with him during a period when Jack and his wife were separated. What we didn’t find out until the second-to-last epsiode (IIRC) was that Nina was also a mole (deep undercover agent) working for the Drazen family (bad guys who had a grudge against Jack). Jack’s wife (Terri), after some misadventures, ended up at CTU and accidentally stumbled on Nina when she revealed her badness. Nina took Terri captive, when Nina found out the jig was up, killed Terri to cover her tracks. (But she got caught anyway.)
George took over CTU from Jack after Jack was accused (falsely) of trying to kill Palmer. He was in charge during the whole Nina/Terri affair, plus there was some bad blood between him and Jack anyway. Basically, Jack never liked or trusted George.
Of the CTU guys, only George and Tony are returning. The rest are new. Nina should show up later.

Jack’s wife was killed by Nina. Nina was a fellow agent in Jack’s anti-terrorist organization. In the first episode last season, someone (who instantly died) told Jack there was a mole, and to be careful. Well Jack trusted one person, Nina. Wrong decision. She was working for Dennis Hopper, a slavic terrorist (Romanian?). Hopper’s beef? Jack killed his brother in a secret military operation that was greenlighted by then Senator Palmer (that’s why Hopper was trying to assassinate the both of them).
Not having seen the second season’s premiere, I can’t tell you. But I think it might have something to do with the fact that Jack is just a pretty suspicious guy. Is it Tony?
Probably Dennis Hopper’s character (Drazen).
If you don’t want to deal with the minutia of “24”, I highly recommend taping all of them, then watching them en masse in one sitting. KneadtoKnow and I did it last season. I don’t have a link for the 24 Club handy, and my browser is pretty slow today. I’m sure KtK will be along shortly to help out.
