We called the “inside me” twist too. However, wouldn’t the electro-paddles the doc used right before Seventh Soldier died have messed with the memory chip?
Oooh, what a great question… Man that would be fantastic.
I’m not sure if that voltage would be enough to scramble what’s likely Flash Memory in a cartridge, and then in a sealed plastic pouch. It’s insulated so it’s getting less direct current. An electromagnetic field would have resulted from the shock? Significant enough to scramble it? Anyone care to guess?
Quix:
If it were just one or two of these things, no big deal. But the show just relies on TOO MANY odd circumstances and coincidences. It leaves me shaking my head too often. But remember, all of us criticisizing are still watching it. It’s better than average TV.
But to put some balance, Keifer does a great job as Jack. His acting is top notch. He carries the show. Plamer is pertty good, too as well as his aid (I keep calling her Ensign Ro).
And I do think the writers might toe the PC line and keep Yusef as a good guy, as Stoli has suggested.
But… I’d still take The Shield over 24 any day, though.
Infidel!
I take it you’ve never watched either version of CSI, my pick for the current champ of “oh come ON!” logic and reasoning.
Why is Miguel so mad at Kim? Wasn’t it his idea to cause the wreck in the first place?
And I like the idea of the defibrillator messing with the chip, but then how would they prove that Palmer is being set up?
One last aside–anyone here play Splinter Cell? The NSA guy that talks in your head sounds a lot like Palmer.
I don’t think Miguel is mad at Kim at all. He pretends to be because he doesn’t want her to be with him now that he has a leg cut off! You know, to pretect her… Hey cheezy, but that’s how I took it.
Zazie: I think you may be right. His dismissal of Kim sounded pretty insincere.
You seriously believe that if a disaster not killing anyone like a nuclear explosion going off in the desert happened in the US, that US society would break down and rioting would take place on such a scale that civil authorities (much less civil authorities with national guard assistance) could not maintain order? What historitcal events are you basing this off of? Asserting that the US would start coming apart at the seams from an incident like this is absurd and is not based on any historical parallel or any real-world evidence. It sounds a whole lot more like fantasies which I’ve heard from both the left and right about an excuse to crack down and deal with all of the undesireables than anything plausible.
So, you’d jump out in the street and start breaking things? You may be that screwed up of an individual, but there’s no reason to believe that such behaviour would be widespread.
Did you pay attention to the in-show news footage, or should I ‘cool my jets’ until you have a chance to not ignore it? Sure, they didn’t say ‘only white guys are rioting’, but they only showed white guys rioting in the pictures, picked a white guy for the interview, and made a big deal about how the rioting was racially motivated.
If you consider that the show is probably written by wealthy white people who live in L.A., perhaps it is easy to understand how such a strange and biased viewpoint ends up on the air.
The non-rich people of L.A. riot when court cases are decided. They riot when sports teams win or lose a game.
It isn’t a stretch to assume a Hollywood writer would think all Americans are like that. It’s REAL dumb, but I can see it happening.
The stupidity of writers, that is. Not rioting.
I always think of militia members being white males. They did say it was the militia that was out rioting, yes?
The chip/chips were wrapped in plastic which would act as a insulator so they should be fine. I don’t think they are big enough to hold quality source recordings unless they are very short clips, but that’s pretty typical for hollywood treatment of computer technology. I mean the thought that some one have to physically visit the computer in a shop like that in order to monitor it was funny to me. I tend to let that kind of stuff go. I’m surprised they didn’t unscrew the mouth piece on her desk phone to place a bug;) It has slipped since the bomb went off, but I still find the show very entertaining.
The Georgia goes bezerk thread is funny too, but I guess they felt the need to add some tension and rednecks are the only group that are still fair game for sterotyping in America.
I don’t think “US society would break down”, but that’s not what the show said was happening anyway. I think there would be limited hot spots of rioting which, if not addressed, could grow into a more widespread panic.
I think there is a large difference between how many people would react to a nuclear terrorist attack and a non-nuclear terrorist attack, even if the latter killed significantly more than the former. People just get nuts about nuclear stuff sometimes.
The CompactFlash memory card that many digicams use can hold up to 1Gig of data in a space about the size of a poker chip. The piece that Jack held up was at least that size. A gig is a lot of (fairly) high quality audio.
An MP3 at 1Gig and the highest quality available would yield about 400 minutes. Extrapolate from there and you’re looking at pretty decent audio, especially if you only need about a half an hour of source recordings. Remember, this doesn’t have to be pristine, it just has to demonstrate that the words were originally said in another context.
And who’s to say that they’re not dealing with much more capacity than that in some other format I’m unaware of?
Well, Cobra Guy said the evidence was in “two AIFF files”, which run about 10mb per minute, but that’s still about 100 minutes (more if they’re compressed.) You gotta figure the fake recording wasn’t that long to begin with, since they were able to decrypt, listen to, and authenticate the thing in about 30 mins.
Oh, I forgot my favorite part…Palmer killed an Arab kid!! I think that’s ironic since he told Jack NOT to kill Sayed Ali’s kid, and here he is with blood on his hands. Ain’t fate a bitch?
Hey, I hope you’re having fun battling that Straw Man. Show me where I said that, in your words, “US society would break down.” Better yet, show me where that happened on 24. Lynne said that there was sporadic stuff up and down the East Coast, but the most extreme was in Marietta, GA, due to the large Arab population (which I don’t think is real, but whatever. Deerborn, MI, sure, but I’ve never heard of Marietta, GA being a big Arab locale).
All I said is I don’t think rioting is as unrealistic as a lot of people in this thread are maintaining it to be.

Well, lemme check my history books. Nope, as far as I can tell, there has never been a nuclear device detonated by an enemy on US soil. So obviously there is no historical parallel. Too bad I held up my statements as solid, concrete fact. Waaaaait a minute! No I didn’t! It was conjecture! That’s why I started off my response with the words “I think”!
However, to defend my position (even though it’s wholly unnecessary, as I’m just speculating and conjecturing here), I ask you: since when is rioting a rational response that follows from a logical chain of events that a normal, objective human being would approve of? In other words, can you provide me with examples of what you deign to be situations where rioting is “realistic”?
**
Yeah, that’s me. I’m quite the thug.
Dammit, I’m being sarcastic again. Heh, this amuses me. Was it me putting the word PISSED in capital letters like that that enabled you to take the tremendous leap in logic that has me out in the streets rioting? Lemme know, so I can get all ee cummings and help you calm down.

What would you have them do, interview an Eskimo? A Papua New Guinean? It’s Georgia. White guys live there. I fail to see how that simple fact leads you to believe that 24 is playing up the “Dur hick Redneck” angle. You may be proven right, but as it stands right now, I think you’re just stretching to find things to criticize about the show. Also, I could have sworn that I saw at least one black guy in the footage, but then again, it wasn’t shown for long, and the footage was ostensibly shot at 4 AM, so it was kinda hard to tell. Then again, that makes it kind of hard for YOU to say that they “only showed white guys.”
Alright now, boys, you two break it up or take it to Great Debates or the Pit.
Yes, it was. I would call rioting on a scale that civil authorities across most of the US cannot restore order even with National Guard help a “break down of US society”, and I don’t see how you could not regard it as that. Remeber that in 24, the president is ready to send in the regular army because police and national guard can’t restore order.

You claimed that 24’s depiction of US society breaking down was not unreasonable. I would call rioting on a scale that civil authorities across most of the US cannot restore order even with National Guard help a “break down of US society”, and I don’t see how you could not regard it as that. Remeber that in 24, the president is ready to send in the regular army because police and national guard can’t restore order; it was not “sporadic stuff” but rioting on a scale that
So, a cop-out as I expected - you aren’t basing your belief on any historical evidence like response to attacks on the US in the past.
I never said anything about approving of a chain of events, so your first question is absurd, and the second one is absurdly vague - rioting is realistic in situations like those in which rioting has happened. Racist rioting against middle easterners in response to a terrorist attack that didn’t kill anyone within 2 hours of the event occuring and widespread enough that police and national guardsmen can’t contain it, as protrayed in 24, is not.
It was the fact that you used the fact that you’d be “PISSED” after something like the events in 24 happened as an explanation of why you believe that riots like those that happened in 24 would happen in real life. Was your “PISSED” comment just a nonsequitor?
I would have them avoid grossly unrealistic racist rioting against middle easterners in response to a terrorist attack that didn’t kill anyone within 2 hours of the event occuring and widespread enough that police and national guardsmen can’t contain it. The PC fantasy that a terrorist attack is going to prompt the Evil White Men to start assaulting vaugely Arabic-looking people across the country was shown to be absurd after 9-11.
Yeah, that’s it, when absurd PC crap annoys me, I’m ‘just stretching’. What an insightful and in-depth analysis.
Dammit, someone pit someone, I have something to say, too!
When did this happen on the show?
