For that matter, what happened to Granpa Bauer and Jack’s son/nephew? And has the kids mother just been sitting around calmly somewhere for the past, oh, eight hours, confident that Jack will eventually get around to saving him?

Jack left HOT Rena Sofer and her son safely in CTU’s care several hours ago.
But what about Grandpa? He’s still out on the wind, right?

I wouldn’t be surprised if Grampa is part of the Chinese Connection. He may end up being a hero. Also - Audrey is no doubt being held about 10 minutes from CTU.
"Damn, Jack. "
This week almost makes up for the limited body count so far. “Say hello to your brother”. Classic.
One nice bit about this episode – it managed to throw something at me that I didn’t expect. Namely, the wrapup of the Fayed/suitcase nukes plotline. With 2 nukes left, I was fully expecting those to account for the remainder of this season. After all, the first 3 have been dealt with one-by-one. Well, the first one exploded, but the other two have been stopped one at a time. I figured with 1/3 of the season remaining (going into tonight) that Jack would stop one more nuke within the next two episodes, then have the last 6 episodes to find the last one. All the time with Fayed slipping and sliding away.
When Jack entered the warehouse alone – I thought he was going to be captured. Again.
Instead, this episode was a pleasant surprise, with Jack stopping both of the remaining nukes at once.
In fact, I have a feeling that my first scenario was a distinct possibility earlier on in the season, when this one wasn’t written yet. Otherwise, why have two remaining nukes at this point? Why not just one?
But then, perhaps a deciding factor on where to take this season relates to the phone call:
Audrey: Jack, help me! Jask: Audrey, is that you? Audrey: Yes, and you have to save me! I got involved in this bank heist, and that ended abruptly, and now they are going to kill me, and I’ll be out of work again! Jack: What? Audrey: Do you want me employed here in season 7 or not?! I don’t want to have to do some lame sitcom, you know! Please, Jack!

If there’s one thing about 24 that’s assured, it’s that nobody is ever safe when they’re in CTU’s care.

Oh, lord, The Stick is back. Is there anybody that Jack has less chemistry with than Audrey? She’s a blank place in the show labelled “Insert Girlfriend Here.” In my opinion, of course.

Nell will be saved by Dudley Do-Right, just you wait and see!
About to watch it again now, but did they check that both of the suitcases contained a nuke?
There was one open with an obvious nuke in it, and the other was closed and I dont think Doyle opened it up at all. I really hope they finish this story arc here and continue with the Audrey bit, but seems like they left with an open and shut case…groan

Pure speculation, but perhaps the Chinese will be looking to trade a suitcase nuke or two for Audrey’s life. They know they’ll never get any information from Jack if they take him back to China so I’m sure the deal won’t simply be “trade your freedom for your girlfriend’s”.
Love that predictable 24 timing…when Fayed was hung out to dry and the nukes declared “safe” with 4 minutes left in the episode I knew we were in for another “exciting twist”…
I love how the Chinese have the courtesy to wait until after Jack has secured the nukes to make the phone call.
I think there is a certain point in the season where the writers start incorporating their viewer’s feedback into the plot of each episode. They have a certain amount of episodes written before the season airs, and then they write the rest while the show airs.
It might be that the writers have realized that the current story isn’t working and came up with a new one. I just hope we see more Chloe.

Is anyone else getting a feeling that they’re grooming Doyle to be an apprentice/replacement for Jack?

Naw, he’s the mole. They’ve beaten us over the head (well, maybe not for 24) that Milo doesn’t like him. Milo even told that to a woman who scorned him, so we know he’s right.

PUT DOWN THE PUN AND GET DOWN ON THE GROUND! NOW!!!
Well, I suppose the other choice is…
Doyle: Damn, Jack…! Jack: Good work, everybody. Now let’s gather evidence and secure the area. I’m heading to the Burger King across the street. I’m so hungry I could eat a frickin’ horse…
Jack heads over to BK
Jack: Yes, I’d like a double-Whopper with cheese, onion rings, and a large coke, please. Clerk: Sir… we’re out of onion rings…
