This is 100% a coup attempt, a deliberate disruption of governance in a desperate bid to retain power.
He should call on Pence (assuming he has escaped safely) and the Cabinet to immediately go for a 25th ammendment solution.

I disagree. From the 2016 election, democrats, BLM and women have been protesting and none of them got violent. These people are full blown terrorist, not because they’re protesting, but because they’re being violent and breaking into the federal buildings.

This is drifting into “national emergency” territory, which gives Trump the opportunity to declare an emergency and to declare martial law.
Don’t think he wouldn’t do it. Look at his language: he’s already lumped his own political “allies” as his enemies. He would have the legal authority to do it. He would have the military at his disposal. He could (at least in theory) prevent the electoral college outcome from being officially recognized according to the statutory process.
I wonder if Pelosi and McConnell can organize a quick impeachment and conviction from whatever bunker they are hiding in. That’s another option.
Bigger practical concern: terrorists have unrestricted access to the computers in official offices. This is a horrifying breach of US infosec. Any enterprising individual with a malicious USB stick could do unimaginable damage to American government’s data infrastructure.

That’s what I was thinking too. These protesters are merely going around room to room like tourists and only apparently want selfies. But if they wanted to steal all sorts of documents or thumb drives, they’re just lying right there in the open.
