And also, once Warnock and Ossoff are seated, it’s still a tie, so Mitch is still in charge until the inauguration.

If they can get Murkowski in there, he’s crumble under the combined onslaught.

I would think that it would at least take a couple of days before the new senators are sworn in.

NBC is using the words “Terrorist” and “Rioters”.

Once more, with feeling…NOT IF YOU’RE WHITE. (I know you know this. Just trying to hammer the point home.)

The Capitol Police is really not such a powerful outfit, tactically speaking, when spread across a quite large complex much of which was not built for defensibility and is mostly not fortified. Most checkpoints except those at the Visitor Center are just sort of shoved in where they could fit them, and already inside the buildings, not set out a half a block away like the White House’s. And the insides of the Capitol per se are labyrinthine and you could be flushing people out of some back stairways into the weekend. So the decision is to secure the escape routes and protect the members.

Congress’ security saw until today as the big threats an individual attack as with the GOP baseball team in 2017, a small unit raid in the style of March 1954; an announced organized hostile demonstration as last summer, or a catastrophic attack of megaterrorism a-la 9/11 for which last case the CPsecurity would be moot anyway.

Oh, but as TroutMan pointed out it would if the disqualification penalty is on the table.

And part of the point is to remove him from where he can give any further orders. Then President Pence or Pelosi can have the LoudBois be put in their place properly.

I could imagine that after the grief they took for the heavy-handed response to BLM over the summer that they made an explicit attempt to be gentler. Maybe. They better have some good documented proof that that was the intent.

Still, heads should roll. What an embarrassment.

I just saw somebody on Twitter say the reason why the Capitol Police did such a bad job is because they were too busy running back and forth changing between their police uniforms and their Proud Boy gear.

I took a little peek over at /r/conservative. This is actually one of the more… “reasonable” sources of right-wing discussion. Like, you could easily, easily go much crazier. And yet … they’re saying shit like how everyone who denounces this is a RINO and a pussy… one guy even said Trump can’t be responsible for this because he’s been calling for a crackdown on political violence for years. Like, his logic goes “Trump wanted the police to brutalize police brutality protests, therefore he opposes political protest movements, therefore his supporters storming the capital along with him clearly aren’t his fault because he opposes political violence”

There are a few people who are treading on the verge of being reasonable and they’re being shouted down by the crazies.

This shit isn’t going away. These people aren’t going to unradicalize. The cult is tens of millions strong. You can’t just sort of … get over that and go back to normal.

Military/overseas ballots are allowed to arrive until Friday so certification is after that, even not taking into account inevitable legal challenges.

Couldn’t they have just locked the doors as the mob ascended the steps?

Lock the doors? They opened the barricades to let them in!

I’m just getting on-line today and just seeing the 550+ posts I’m behind in reading this fast-moving thread, so apologies if this observation has been said already:

I’m old enough, as many Dopers are, to remember the campus unrest of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. I was at U. C. Berkeley during part of that time.

In those riotous days (mostly about anti-Vietnam war and various social- and racial-justice issues), there was much rioting on and near campuses, and much police action.

In Berkeley, I remember there were MASS ARRESTS. Whole crowds of rioters (plus some innocents swept up in the melees) were gassed and herded into paddy wagons and hauled off to Santa Rita prison. The Berkeley Campus police, Berkeley Municipal Police, and Alameda County sheriffs were all involved. The sheriffs wore light-blue uniforms, thus they were call the Blue Meanies.

And now, MASS ARRESTS are exactly what should have been done, and still should be if these insurrections continue. Every last protester who entered the Capitol building should have been arrested, however peacefully or forcefully may have been required. Any protestor forcibly entering the building and resisting peaceable arrest should have been SHOT, if necessary.

Nobody on this message board has seen such a forceful message from me to date. But here it is now. This riot should absolutely have been put down totally and completely, using whatever force might have been necessary. (With due adjustment as needed, of course, to protect the safety of innocent people and property.)

These riots were expected to continue through tomorrow too, according to some reports I’ve read. That must be prevented. And after the fact, every last participant who can be identified must be identified and arrested and prosecuted.

And no more excuses for Trump, Rudy, Cruz, Roy, or others who have openly hinted at violence. No more “plausible deniability” for any of them. They have sufficiently-imminently fomented and incited this violence, and must be held accountable. If the Trump administration won’t (which is a given), then the Biden administration must.

In the time it took me to write the above screen, 23 new posts have been added to this thread.

Yes, it is.

There is a big difference between assaulting peaceful protesters, and protecting the Capitol from violent assault.

I’m sure that if the president had wanted a photo op on the Capitol steps, they could have cleared out the protesters.

Agree 100%. I, too, am old enough to remember mass arrests.

I’ll get into it this far: he self-identifies as a revolutionary, not as a reporter.

Me, too. 68-70.

BLM:

MAGA protest:

It certainly would as that could include a bar from being able to run for president. Trump can even be impeached after he is out of office for this reason.

Right-wing white people.

They were perfectly willing to attack white people during the BLM protests last summer.
