6 January 2021; A Day worth a Thread

I’m assuming you’ve seen this by now.

Are you saying that the nazis killed 70 million during the Holocaust?

I think it is also worth noting that this drama is playing out at smaller scales in statehouses around the country. There are mobs attempting to storm capital buildings in Utah, Georgia, Washington and Oregon. Trump has finally - Finally!!- been called out by most of his own party, but that doesn’t end this. The poison he spewed, the cockroaches he liberated from their rock, the genie he released, pick your metaphor - that’s not going to end any time soon. Members of Congress might be safe at the moment, but governors and local officials will still have to deal with this, with the ugliness and sometimes personal danger this has engendered.
When those scumbags stormed the capital and disrupted the legislature in Michigan last year and appeared to suffer few consequences, that no doubt emboldened them and others into thinking this kind of shit could be successful. Some of those assholes were later involved in the plot to kidnap the governor. And now their imitators have the same ideas about the national government - not just storming the building and vandalizing offices but kidnapping and executing members of Congress.
I’m not a death penalty supporter, but I would not shed a tear if these assholes were executed for sedition. The idea that this type of violence is justified in any way needs to be smacked down hard.

I don’t think putting feet up on a desk was anyone’s plan.
They just didn’t meet the kind of resistance they had expected, and the senators were nowhere to be seen. So rather than just shrug and exit, they essentially squatted there until they got bored.

But no, I wouldn’t take it as evidence that they were non-violent either.

Someone said on the news last night that most of the protesters, if they face charges at all, would only be charged with trespassing on government property. Some others who broke windows and such could be charged with destruction of property, so no more than a kid who breaks a window with a baseball.

I hope they’re able to identify some of the instigators and bad actors like the ones carrying the zip ties and charge them with something more fitting to their intent-- people who went in there intending to take members of Congress hostage should be removed from society and locked up for a long time.

There was a practical incentive as well. The desperate last-ditch legal plan was to delay certification past the statutory deadline and then throw the whole thing into the House as “contested” with the one-state-one-vote decision. This was effectively confessed by Giuliani when he left a voicemail for the wrong Senator* in which he said the insurrection and the suspension of the count was providing a useful delay, and could the Senator please object to some more states to draw out the schedule even more. By wrapping things up, this strategic angle (stupid and far fetched as it is) was closed off.

(*Seriously, has any American political figure had sixty days of epic dick-tripping like Rudy?)

Mulvaney resigns:

Having read some of the posts here, I think some don’t realize just how fragile Democracy is. To think Democracy in the USA isn’t under grave threat means you have never seriously read any history.

Ooh, what a brave move.

Mulvaney’s desperate pleading for historical mercy is hilariously delusional.

AAGH! Finally finished reading all 343 posts that happened after I went to bed last night. Thanks to all who hung in there for the play-by-play.

The question about whether shooting was justified belongs in its own thread IMHO.

My question this morning: has anyone actually SEEN trump since yesterday afternoon. Yeah, Dan Whatsit sent a tweet this morning 'cause Donnie is in Twitter Jail, but can anyone verify that trump is alive and walking around?

Wow, the excuse of the people who remain who are saying that Trump might replace them with someone worse is wearing a little thin. He only has 2 weeks left. If they all left, what could he do?

But I’m glad he realizes that his reputation is ruined. I’ve always wondered how the other people don’t think theirs will be as well.

The guy photographed with his feet up in Speaker Pelosi’s office also has a photo of himself with a piece of her mail:

It should look on his cell wall.

You might want to take a second look at his skin color.

Wow, way to totally miss the point of that shirt … and the reason the guy was wearing it.

Wow, what a way to miss the point of my post, genius.
No wonder you guy elected Trump and came within a hair of doing so again.

He’s all, “Trump’s not the same man he was eight months ago.” He’s all “I didn’t sign up for this.”

Motherfucker, Trump was calling for second-amendment solutions to his political opponents in 2016. Motherfucker, he’s been threatening the media for the past four years. Motherfucker, he told the Proud Boys to stand back and stand by.

Motherfucker, Trump hasn’t changed. He’s exactly who he was when you joined, and this is exactly what you signed up for.

With one difference. You just didn’t think he’d come after Republicans: you thought his violence would stay focused on your political enemies.

Is this a WWII version of “All Lives Matter”?

That’s exactly what it is.

Nice, straight to insults.
Maybe you could explain to the class exactly what message that t-shirt is expressing?
