I have to say that I give a lot of credit to Pelosi, McConnell and Pence for going back and finishing the certification. I won’t underestimate how reassuring it was to see them get right back into the building and right back to work and I also appreciate them staying until the certification was done. I don’t think they would have been criticized for moving the location or postponing the time but they sent a message that they were there to do a job and they were going to finish it. I do have to say that Amy Klobuchar looked exhausted. I hope she is OK and I hope all the Senators and Congresspersons get a good night’s sleep.
He ran for (and won) Missouri Attorney General, carrying a ladder around to symbolize politicians who use one office as a stepping stone to a higher one. Two years later (half-way through his term), he used the AG office as a stepping stone to the Senate.
Just curious - when would you think your democracy was in real danger?
Because you might want to read how democracies die. The death seldom starts with an attack by an overwhelming and credible force. The death starts with stupid but pointed little attacks which test the waters and then build.
I do appreciate that it’s sheer paranoia to treat every stupid little protest as a danger to democracy. But when a sitting but outgoing president lies about an election being stolen to deliberately incite protest, and a bunch of protestors force the governing body when it’s confirming the election result…
Twitter is not going to suspend him again, it’s going to ban him. I don’t know quite what they will consider to be the threshold for that, but after the insurrection he incited yesterday and the subsequent suspension, I imagine the bar will be pretty low. He won’t be able to stop talking about how he won the election bigly – a total landslide – and it got stolen from him, and Biden is an illegitimate president. He’s lost his mind and he can’t help himself, and his sycophants are violent idiots, so I don’t think it will be that long before things come to a head again.
Yeah that’s what they did alright because there were no people there to focus their ire on. If that chamber had still had Reps in it, you think this mob was just gonna say ‘hi’ and quietly mill around? Is that why people brought zip ties?
I heard an interview this morning with one of the attackers, who described his plan to capture the “traitors” in the Senate and hang them, “four by four by four” from the trees/gallows outside, “so that this never happens again.”
Dude wasn’t exactly a member of a well-trained commando strike force. But murder was definitely his plan.
A FB friend posted that CFSG had his Twitter account suspended after making tweets urging peace and calm.
Which makes me repeat myself:
President Trump has taken every conceivable position on every possible issue. He has affirmed and disavowed every position he’s ever held. He was both deadly serious and totally kidding. The strategy ? No matter the outcome, he can point to ‘evidence’ that he called it right from the beginning.
There’s a ‘Seinfeld’ reference that’s germane to nearly anything. Some would say the same of the Bible.
And because the CFSG has no spine, no ethics, no morality, and no principles, there’s a vapid orange Tweet – one that fairly reeks of fetid hamberder meet and carbonated diet beverages – that can be used to justify almost any position and support nearly any argument.
If, that is, concepts of ‘context’ and ‘totality’ mean absolutely nothing to you.
Wouldn’t today be a lovely day to impeach/25 the MF ??
In the complex and shocking stew of the CFSG’s state of mind, I can’t help but wonder if/to what extent his bout with COVID and/or the treatments he received play a role.
This is an unusual bug with unusual sequelae, dramatically varied presentation, and combinations of treatments never before truly vetted.
One thing that struck me was the lack of seriousness of the rioters, as if it was all just a game.
Wandering around taking selfies and posing on the dais? These are idiots and vandals, not serious revolutionaries with real grievances.
I saw a man in a conference room with his feet up. He and his friends were smoking weed, and when we clocked each other, they offered me a joint.
In another room, people were lounging and rummaging through furniture. They put up stickers and scrawled slogans like “Trump Won” and “Our House.” Some invited me to take their picture. One young guy put his feet up on one of the desks, posed, and told me, “Yeah, this is my desk. I paid for this.”
The mood was giddy, but it was chaos. Everyone was excited. People were chanting, “This is our America” and “Whose house? Our house!” They were having fun, entertaining themselves. The priority seemed to be to have their friends take selfies with them inside the Capitol.
The people I managed to speak to didn’t seem to understand the gravity of what they had done. Inside a building they had broken into, they described themselves as “peaceful” to me. I talked to a kid from Florida, who must have been no more than 17 or 18. He told me, “This is nothing compared to what Antifa does.” I said, “Look, they’re breaking the glass.” He answered, “Yeah, but at least they’re not destroying the things.” I showed him pictures of things destroyed. It didn’t register. On the way up, there was a woman holding a sign saying, “If we were leftists, we would be rioting.”
These people are total fucking morons playing games, that’s why they won’t achieve anything except random violence.
There’s a certain pragmatism to doing it immediately as well. As long as it remained undone, there would always be an incentive for further disruption. Once it’s completed, that incentive goes away.
It helps. Donald Trump MUST concede at this point or Cabinet & Pence need to remove him. If he said, “It’s over, we lost, Biden will be President. Let’s support him while disagreeing with him,” it would calm a lot of people down.
Thing is they are probably not a coherent group. As above and below there is also some reason to believe some of them were murderous thugs. And there are photos of some of them in military style dress festooned with military style gear - who probably did not have putting their feet up on a desk, smoking weed and taking selfies on their mind. I suspect the latter wisely realised that the numbers weren’t on their side and that their intentions were going to fizzle, but that doesn’t alter what they had intended to do if they could.
