67th Golden Globe Awards (2010)

The visuals look kinda dumb to me but I’ve never liked CGI. I thought Lord of the Rings III was practically unwatchable even though the story was good. I just had a hard time looking at it. I sometimes get nauseous when I watch CGI movies on the big screen and they have panned scenes – I see the pixellation. This includes some movies I did like, like Gladiator.

But the Avatar people also look corny. Like a cross of Smurf and Native American. I’m unsure how seeing them bigger on 3D would make that more effective.

It’s not seeing them bigger and in 3D, it’s living with them for an entire movie, getting to know them and the world of Pandora. I happen to think the previews look like shit too, but you can’t tell anything about how amazing this world is from the previews. It needs total immersion on the big screen.

Btw, the full list of winners:

Thanks for the list, Equipoise.

I’m surprised by Margulies’ win. In every role she plays, the character seems completely devoid of joy.

I’m deligted for Mad Men, Glee and Michael C. Hall.

Avatar though? What the hell? The visuals are amazing but the story is awful. You know how it will end after sitting through the first 5 minutes. There is nothing in the story that is anything new. Nothing that hasn’t been done to death in many many films.

Can we all just leave cricetus alone and not make this thread about him and his feelings towards Avatar. There are already two threads (at least) for him to do that in.

As to the Globes. Would have liked to see Up in the Air win a few more but what you gonna do with the Avatar juggernaught picking up steam.

I thought Ricky did a very good job. He was very Ricky Gervais about the whole thing and that’s gonna rub a lot of people up the wrong way but I really like his stuff. I loved his intro for Mel Gibson, several people in the audience looked truly shocked at that.

Was delighted to see Lithgow and Hall win for Dexter. I’ve just finished watching Season 4 over the weekend and was very impressed with both.

I’ve seen quite a bit of snark about Mariah’s dress, but I was not complaining. I don’t care for her music, and every time I hear her speak she sounds like a world-class idiot. But one thing I do enjoy is looking at her body. She can show off her boobs any time she wants to, IMO.

I haven’t seen Avatar but I plan to (hope that doesn’t make me stupid). Reactions I’ve heard about it have been overwhelmingly positive and I’m not at all surprised it won. I did see The Hangover and and I believe it did deserve the trophy.

On the TV side, Mad Men’s win was totally predictable and a safe choice. Never seen Glee (doesn’t look like my cup of tea, but I might check it out now), and I was quite surprised it won over some pretty strong competition.

The show itself: Gervais was kind of funny a few times, but the whole “Ooh, I’m such a bad boy and I’m gonna say bad things on live TV” didn’t really pan out as promised. No rambling drunken speeches to speak of, no really spontaneous surprises (James Cameron saying “I have to pee” doesn’t count). Robert Downey’s off-the-cuff, unrehearsed speech was clearly scripted and rehearsed. A fairly bland night overall, I thought.

I agree, I wasn’t a fan of Lord of the Rings, but I get why they were acclaimed. Avatar just seemed like it was trying to be an epic fantacy, but didn’t at all live up to it.
Didn’t think Gervais was that bad a host… some of the crowd seemed to turn on him a bit.

Drew Barrymore may not have been drunk, but that was the essence of rambling. “I’ve been in show business since I was five years old, but I have no idea how to act on stage! It never occurred to me that I could ever win an award! I’m just so damn cute, you have to forgive me . . . I’m going to gush incoherently about how unprepared I am, even though I own my own production company!” :dubious:

Was it me, or did Harrison Ford seem like he had a few before he got up on stage? Something seemed off with him.

I didn’t see 300 Days of Summer. Would it be a downer to a single guy who has trouble maintaining a relationship from caviler women who seem to look at them as a “time waster”? It may still be a great movie, but I don’t want the whole, misterious, (mean), woman uses a nice guy as a punching-bag, (or sex toy).

I think he was just bored.

I’d like to see 500 Days of Summer, based solely on how freakin’ adorable Joseph Gordon-Levitt was during the whole ceremony. Boy, was he happy to be there.

It’s probably just that I’ve always found Toby Maguire annoying, but his look of consternation when he didn’t win tickled me. Dude, were you under the impression you had a shot here?

I know I was, which explains some of my posts last night.

Well, it won for Best Director, not Best Story, so maybe they just thought it was very well put together? I’m not sure how they judge categories like Best Director

EDIT: Replaced “Best Producer” with “Best Director”

I like him too. I liked him in Mysterious Skin, and his character in 3rd Rock From the Sun when I watched it.

I really want to see that movie, but I need to know the film’s angle before I risk renting it. Like I said, it may be a good flick even if I’m not personally in the mood for it. For all I know, it could be a GOOD movie for me to see. I just don’t like when they hold the ultra-independent girl up to be unscathed while the boy is heart broken, and in despair.

So anyone think I should rent it? Or should I wait until I’m less sensitive about love?

500 Days of Summer had no business being nominated for anything. Good cast, but a lot of cliched writing and film school directing stunts.

I agree with you on Avatar, but due to your posts in this thread, I hope you don’t mind or take it personally that I hold out for a second opinion cricetus.

The reason I asked was that I was surprised The Hangover won the Globe, when I heard so many good things about 500 Days. I thought it looked more like a drama than a comedy anyway. I’m still glad a comedy like The Hangover got recognized. Not that I even liked it enough to see it again, (it was worth seeing once), It’s just nice to see a goofball comedy get a win.

My mom and I both cried a small amount at 500 Days of Summer, and we are both in happy relationships. I won’t say anything else but that we both also loved it. Unless you think just watching a movie will kill you just see it.

The Hangover won because it was funny and EVERYONE seemed to see it compared to a lot of comedies - it made SO MUCH money at the box office last summer and people kept talking about it and talking about it and now it’s on DVD and they’re talking about it more.

And Raguleader yes James Cameron won best director for Avatar but Avatar also won best drama film.

Does anyone know how the Hollywood Foreign Press picks their winners? Do they care about public opinion somehow?

I thank you for addressing my question, (I know it’s a bit OT). Right now it may kill me – yes. But I will see it eventually. Knowing two people in happy relationships broke down tells me it may be a little much for me. I also don’t want people to think I’m against the “unscathed ultra-independent girl” character, as they exist in real life.

Yeah you may want to wait seeing “500 Days of Summer”. I loved the movie, but friends who have seen it and didn’t like it usually said that Summer treated Tom so badly that it was hard to sympathize with her character.
And why are we wasting time talking about Avatar (not going to watch it because I’m not a fan of action flicks) when we should be talking about Christina Hendricks’ outfit? Wow.
