7 Jan 2021 and beyond - the aftermath of the storming of the Capitol

I believe they thought that if they threw enough delays in, this would give them more time to attempt to sway more congresscritters into voting against the EVs. They thought they’d get some kind of bandwagon/snowball effect going that would result in their victory. Or so they were trying to sell it that way. Who knows, they might have picked up more votes and caused even more congresscritters to show they didn’t respect the voters’ will.

There wasn’t really a specific, deliberate strategy beyond “every delay gives us a chance to invent and try some new hail mary.” Maybe we can argue that a blown deadline sends the process to a House vote. Maybe we can convince a state to withdraw its certified electors. Maybe this. Maybe that. As long as there’s time on the clock, we’re alive. It’s not any more complicated than that.

This ^^^ Because this:

Donnie and Rudy can only think ahead one day, and barely that.

There was a much darker side to the insurrection than was previously seen broadcast live.

Police found a pickup truck full of bombs and guns near Capitol, feds say

Chris Hayes shows some videos of more horrible occurrences that were not largely seen before. A reporter said he heard 3 rioters who said they were looking for Mike Pence to hang him for betrayal. An AP reporter was attacked. A police officer was pinned between a shield and door and was screaming. The guy with the flex cuffs, hoping to take hostages.

More and more online platforms where Trump supporters congregated are being shut down.

Right-wing social media app Parler has been removed from the Google Play store
CNN

Reddit bans subreddit group “r/DonaldTrump” (includes a list of other platforms that have banned Trump, including Twitch, Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, etc)

That’s why they aren’t being prosecuted by Apple or Google. They are merely being told that Apple and Google, as private companies, are free to not let Parler use their platform.

Depends on how you look at the final outcome. My rough guess is 25 % chance she stays R, 70% chance she become an I caucusing it’s the Republicans, and a 5% chance she becomes an I caucusing with the Democrats a.k.a. the next Angus King.

CNN played a video clip of a whole crowd (several dozen, at least) chanting in unison “Hang Mike Pence”!
And The Holy Hair Helmet still hasn’t disavowed The Howling Yam.

Absolutely! The conundrum is that much of this stuff, in isolation in its own little stovepipe, is basically harmless stupidity. But in reality they all added up to the appalling disaster we saw on Wednesday.

Voting against the EV as a stand-alone event - legal. Taken into the whole picture - a component or sub-component of treason (INHO) .

Legally, how does the system square that circle so that justice is done?

Or a telescoping antennae or legs. What does that even mean?

Language doesn’t always evolve in ways that make sense.

As was pointed out by another Doper, the new Alaska election procedures certainly broaden her political options. The top four vote takers in a “jungle primary” advance to the general election, so there’s almost no chance of her being knocked off in the primary by a more conservative challenger like she was in her 2010 primary (she won the general election as a write-in candidate but I’m sure she’s glad not to face that possibility again). The general election is ranked-choice, so she’d be in a great position to pick up the second choice votes of any Democratic or Independent candidates.

Something else that might persuade her to caucus with the Democrats is that Alaska has a very strong political culture of “bringing home the bacon.” Ted Stevens may have gotten heat nationally for funding the “bridge to nowhere” but for decades his ability to bring funding back to Alaska was a huge political asset. I assume Schumer would sign off on whatever spending she wanted to get her to switch.

The challenge is trying to accommodate her without alienating other Democrats in the caucus. For instance, maybe her price is she wants to continue as Chair of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. The problem being that the Democrat positioned to inherit that Chairmanship is – Joe Manchin. Who’s got options of his own when it comes to party switching. I’m sure something can be worked out, but Chuck would have a lot of delicate balancing to do if she crossed over.

It’s my understanding that the Murkoskis are an Alaskan family political dynasty and therefore not as beholden to party politics as most Republicans.

Apparently, she won her seat in 2010 as a write-in candidate, defeating a tea party challenger.

Timing of the start of the process is in the Constitution; and they started on time. Nothing in there about how long they can take; and the language about what to do if they haven’t decided by the 20th seems to me to imply that they can take at least that long.

Of course, that such claims would be nonsense obviously doesn’t mean that they wouldn’t have been made.

My guess is a 95% chance that she’ll loudly dither and dither and dither but never quite jump. Quite possibly accompanied in both parts of that by Collins.

Your understanding is correct.

Still feeling sad about the state of the country. Although a majority of the country want Trump removed from office, there are still quite a number of people who think the riot was either acceptable or positive although I suppose there will probably never be 100% consensus about any issue…

Now they’d identified one of the “zip-tie” guys as a retired AF Lt. Col. Here’s hoping he loses his retirement and everything that goes with it.

Carrying away Nancy Pelosi’s lectern guy is a house dad married to a local physician wife.

I’m still amazed at the variety of people who were there including politicians, police, lawyers, CEO, ex-military. These are not the people the press describes as hurting for money and needing help. I’m baffled at the demographic.

No it doesn’t. It means joy over misfortune. The Dutch call it leedvermaak, which means the same.

Schade means harm or misfortune, freude means joy.
Edited to add: Danish is skadefryd.

But don’t you know? Veterans CANNOT be questioned, or considered anything other than heroes!

Here’s hoping he is arrested and then interrogated for quite a while to see just what his intentions were, who he is associated with, and exactly what communications he has had in the last month. Confiscate all his electronic devices and go over them with a fine toothed comb.

Don’t just give him a ticket for trespassing and let him go.

He’s pretty clearly a dangerous seditioninst.
