Yes, they absolutely should. But they should not necessarily announce that they are doing this, so we may not find out whether they are doing this or not.
Y’know, there is more than just a touch of the Soveriegn Citizen shit in their interpretation of the constitution - magic words, rigid rules, no consideration of intent or precedent - for me it is getting well in that direction.
Would there be any crossover between MAGAs and Sov Cits? I would be amazed if there was not.
I once had a conversation at a political fundraiser with a security guy who was on the team guarding the politico. This was arranged through friends and family of my wife; she is middle east born and a naturalized American, and the event’s attendees were of a similar background.
I was asking him whether there were special precautions for securing an event with this kind of group. He said not really, they’re always on alert. I suggested lightly, And also these folks have jobs and money, they’re not exactly the radicalization target. He looked at me funny, and said, Well, not these people specifically, because they’re here doing lobbying and fund-raising, they’re participating in the game the right way, so we trust them; but in general, it is in fact the people with jobs and money who are more likely to be radicalized.
It was my turn to look surprised. He explained: the poor have to work to survive. They don’t have time to get into political groups. It’s the middle class college kids who sit in their windows looking out at the struggles, and who have free time to organize with each other: they’re the real problem.
He was talking about third world terrorist hot spots, but if you look closely at the hardest-edged Trump demographic, you see the same phenomenon.
South Africa is ready to share its experience of a peaceful transition to democracy with the US, should that country ask for help, President Cyril Ramaphosa has said.
Ramaphosa said; “If indeed they would like to learn something from us, we are on the ready to provide them with our own experience and how we were able to navigate a very difficult situation that confronted us at the dawn of our democracy.”
I love this story because I think Ramaphosa is making the offer seriously - he is not being sarcastic in the way that e.g. Russia or Venezuela were - and yet it has such strong “who’s the shithole country now, eh?” energy.
Brock told The New Yorker that he was afraid of being attacked by members of Black Lives Matter and Antifa. “I didn’t want to get stabbed or hurt,” he said.
Like anyone not in the Coup Clutz Clan is gonna buy that.
My brother is a sov-cit. I haven’t talked to him in a couple years, but last I heard, he was a pretty big Trump supporter.
I have been meaning to look through the photos of those in the insurrection to see if I see him in any of them.
That’s fascinating. Thanks for sharing that. Makes sense.
About once a month here, someone starts a thread on how to get Trump supporters to change sides. But I don’t think people really understand the demographic and especially why they’re so passionate about being a part of the Trump team. Maybe this insurrection will shed more light on the people involved in all of this.
Timothy McVeigh was a veteran.
The money quote in this article is from James Mattis
“Today’s violent assault on our Capitol, an effort to subjugate American democracy by mob rule, was fomented by Mr. Trump. His use of the Presidency to destroy trust in our election and to poison our respect for fellow citizens has been enabled by pseudo political leaders who names will live in infamy as profiles in cowardice.”
To me, this was the chilling part of the Twitter blog announcement of Trump’s ban.
- Plans for future armed protests have already begun proliferating on and off-Twitter, including a proposed secondary attack on the US Capitol and state capitol buildings on January 17, 2021.
I would not be surprised at all if Twitter was notified of this by some intelligence agency. At the least, google, Facebook, Microsoft security groups must keep each other informed about their observations.
I think there probably is, the common thread being insanity. MAGAts have no problem with authoritaniasm as long as it’s their authoritaniasm.
Murkowski is already murmuring that she may join forces with Manchin to form an unofficial “moderate” caucus to bridge the gap between the stalwarts of the two parties. Is it inconceivable that Romney and Sasse might want to join the group? It would have enormous influence in the Senate and might actually help in achieving its stated purpose.
So was Lee Harvey Oswald.
This article states:
McConnell’s office notes that the Senate will not reconvene for substantive business until Jan. 19, which means the earliest possible date that impeachment trial proceedings can begin in the Senate is the day before President-elect Joe Biden is inaugurated.
Although the Senate will hold two pro forma sessions next week, on Jan. 12 and Jan. 15, it is barred from conducting any kind of business during those days — including “beginning to act on received articles of impeachment from the House” — without agreement from all 100 senators. With a cadre of Trump-allied senators in the Republican conference, that unanimous consent is highly unlikely.
What is barring them from conducting any kind of business before the 19th without agreement from all senators?
McConnell. He could call the senate back, he has done it before for getting judges through.
So this claim that the agreement of all 100 would be needed is nonsense; all that would be needed would be for McConnell to declare a regular session? [ETA: Well, and 67 to convict; but only McConnell to agree to hear?]
The agreement of 100 senators would be for an unanimous consent to agree to accept the articles. To get to that vote McConnell would have to being back the senate.
The idea that Murkowski, Romney, et al. would consider themselves “moderate” is Exhibit A in how fucked American politics is.
Evans has now resigned from his political post.
I like the fact that Military Times called him an insurrectionist. They haven’t fallen for the Trumpist bs.
