I had a client who got 4 years on a deal where he could have received 20 years or more. He was still pissed off, and filed a motion to withdraw his plea, claiming he was coerced by the judge (which was partially accurate). The prosecutor called his bluff and said they would join his motion, but without the deal he’d be facing 20 years again. My former client withdrew his motion.

The House panel investigating the deadly invasion of the U.S. Capitol aims to hold lengthy public hearings next year detailing “in vivid color” the events of Jan. 6, both at the Capitol and in former President Donald Trump’s White House, Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., said Thursday.
Cheney, the vice chair of the select committee and one of its two Republican members, said the panel aims to conduct “multiple weeks of public hearings” sometime in 2022, a year of crucial midterm elections where the GOP hopes to retake majority control of at least one chamber of Congress…
This one is a few days old, but it made my day.
Finally, some indication that federal law enforcement is taking an interest in prosecuting someone beyond the idiots that served as cannon fodder for the Stop The Steal grift.

I don’t think I’ve eagerly anticipated a viewing spectacle so much, since Lord of the Rings came out.
Weeks of public hearings “in vivid color” would likely make Republicans look very very bad, leading to electoral advantages for Democrats in November, ya think? Why is Liz Cheney all excited about that?
Because she was banished from the Republican party in Wyoming.
She could be saying “Fuck me?? Fuck YOU!”
So is she on a Trump-like revenge swing? As already noted elsewhere on this Board, she’s still a hard-core Conservative and no ally of liberals or Democrats.
And yet she is serving on a Democrats committee. A flying finger in the face of Trump Rebublicans. The enemy of my enemy can be a friend type of relationship. Its called politics.
Cheney could even, just possibly, have some principles; and have decided that a principled conservative needs, right now, on this particular subject, to be working with the Democrats even if she still disagrees with them on too many subjects to become one.
Or she is just looking at it like a trader and seeing where there is an arbitrage position in her market. If 90% are betting A, and you think B is more likely, go all in on B.
And in this case it’s an easy decision as she will likely outlive Trump.
