Judges seem to have their own opinions all over the place. Last I read, the judge in Greene’s case seemed favorable to the petition. The Trumpist judge in Cawthorn’s case threw the petition out, apparently on the grounds that the law was obsolete or something, but then an appeals judge reinstated the petition.
Correction: I read about it a little more carefully. The appeals court didn’t reinstate the petition to bar Cawthorn. They agreed to hear the appeal, which will be argued on May 3.
More good news:
The attorney for several Oath Keepers has been disbarred by the Virginia bar, and was told he can’t represent any 1/6 defendants. But he is ignoring all that, and is still filing motions. The judge has ordered him to knock it off.
It would be pretty challenging to summarize this without robbing it of the overall context. It’s a quick and worthwhile read.
These people are evil, not stupid:
More good news, and the judge jabbed The Orange One:
And that judge was a GOP appointee, by Bush in 2001.
Just another RINO
“Your honor, the president ordered me to steal that bottle of booze!”
And here’s Mitch behind the scenes, soon after Jan. 6:
How can it be damning if there is no chance of punishment for him?
Morally and politically, if not criminally, damning.
Might as well try to drown a fish. Sorry, I’m feeling defeatist today.
NY Times has reporting on GOP members’ “behind the scenes” reactions to Trump and the Jan 6 insurrection in the immediate aftermath: “GOP Leaders Privately Blasted Trump After Jan 6.” Sorry it’s probably paywalled.
In the reporting, they allege that both Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy were supportive of efforts to get Trump to resign or impeach him for his role in the attack.
The really fun part is that McCarthy’s office denied the reporting completely, saying it was “totally false and wrong.” Then the NY Times posted a recording of a McCarthy phone call with GOP members that backed up their reporting, showing that McCarthy said what they reported.
Oops.
Absolute brazen lying, caught 100%, and he will suffer no consequences.
Naturally I am shocked, shocked to learn that McCarthy said one thing in private and another in public, and that his public remarks revealed him to be a craven politician with absolutely no sense of his duty to the Constitution.
Shocked, I say.
Anything that makes McCarthy look like a lying sack of shit is just fine with me, even if there are no other repercussions.
This is hilarious…
“I never said that.”
“Here’s a recording of you saying exactly that.”
The rumor is that the person who slipped the recordings to the NYT reporters is not (as some have speculated) Liz Cheney, but instead the still-has-a-shot-at-deposing-McCarthy Elise Stefanik.
She probably won’t be helped by the situation if Trump stands firm for McCarthy—that’s the big shoe waiting to drop. (Voters won’t care unless Trump cares, and the same goes for the voters in the House Speaker election—always assuming Republicans get the seats they confidently expect.)
That McCarthy has been revealed–not for the first time–as a bare-faced liar and toady won’t matter if Donald still thinks he’s swell. Odds are that Donald will be thinking of what price he can charge McCarthy for his continued support…if McCarthy was a helpless puppet of Trump before, think how much extra crawling he’s going to have to do now.
And… you have your answer.
From the article:
“I’m not mad at you,” Trump told McCarthy in a call Thursday afternoon, according to a second person familiar with the conversation. Both people were granted anonymity to discuss the call. McCarthy and his office did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the Trump call.
But what’s the price? Will Kevin have to clean the Mar-A-Lago lobby floor with his tongue?
(If so, we can be fairly certain that Donald will sell tickets.)
Someone shared a meme today with me:
