I don’t think any of these groups coordinated with the White House in any real way. I think they thought they had the president’s ear, because they read in his statements and what to them seemed like a barrage of valid lawsuits over election fraud a future where Trump declared them his militia.

I also think those ideas were encouraged by informal and self-described Trump advisors like Stone. And I think there was communication through such middle men that never rose to any sort of coordination, except in the minds of the Oath Keepers and other groups. The people with actual access to Trump saw the value of this sort of rhetoric in riling up the base and keeping the momentum if any of the lawsuits or the coup-by-congress succeeded, but unlike the Oath Keepers they would know how futile an actual insurrection would be and how bad it is to have taken part in a failed one.

They thought they could subvert justice by the crooked application of law, because that is something they have experience in, and never needed the shock troops to have a coordinated and plausible plan, just for them to be around for intimidation and to scare the opposition should the pseudo-legal approach succeed.

I think this is perfectly parsed, and I agree. Trump has practiced his style of mob boss communication for a lifetime, and that wouldn’t have changed in his implementation of this scheme.

As much as I want to see Trump go down for all this, it’s a mistake to focus solely on him. The people I most want to see yanked off the national stage to do time are Roger Stone, Steve Bannon, Mike Flynn, Peter Navarro, Stephen Miller and other bottom feeders of this ilk. Also insider congress persons who actively worked to unlawfully overturn the election, such as Ron Johnson, Mike Lee, Josh Hawley, Paul Gosar, MTG, Lauren Boebert, Matt Gaetz and others.

Probably too much to hope for.

at this point we have 919 people charged with crimes relating to the insurrection, 460 have been convicted of various charges, 430 are pending.

Maybe someone can persuade Elon Musk to create a reality show where he buys an island somewhere and ships them all there with the mission of forming their own gummint. Sort of like Lord of the Flies. The catch is even at the end of the season, they don’t get to leave. You can check out anytime you like but you can never leave…

There’s checking out and there’s really checking out.

C. Montgomery Burns '24!

You are much kinder than I. I’ve been thinking of locking them in a room with hammers and say the last man standing gets to walk.

Then lie.

I don’t think Musk is looking to punish insurrectionists.

I wasn’t thinking of the punishment angle. I was thinking of the revenue he could generate from a blockbuster reality show. Advertisers would be standing in line to spend their money. Millions of viewers around the world. The first couple of episodes free-- then pay-per-view.

I agree. As much as I would like an example set to the next wannabee dictator, I also want an example set to those who would enable him.

Gee, wonder why…?

Like Mr. Rogers said, look for the helpers.

https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/06/politics/january-6-committee-criminal-referrals/index.html

Thompson, a Mississippi Democrat, said the committee has not narrowed down the universe of individuals who may be referred.

A source tells CNN the criminal referrals the January 6 committee will ultimately be making “will be focused on the main organizers and leaders of the attacks.”

Bannon? Stone? Trump? Giuliani? Jones? The possibilities are endless.

Congress awarded Congressional Gold Medals to members of the Capitol Police Force today. Family members of Officer Brian Sicknick refused to shake hands with McCarthy and McConnell.

And Washington Metro cops heckled Michael Fanone.

I don’t get it. Are they admitting that they are on the side of the insurrectionists?

Possibly, but Occupy Democrats isn’t the most trustworthy of sources.
