More like “hateriots.”
I know they like Trump, but what do they think is so terrible about our current situation that armed insurrection is necessary and a “now or never” kind of thing?
The simple answer I guess is white people losing control, but is that how they would articulate it? What are their alleged grievances? [I’m probably repeating myself with this type of question, but I honestly don’t get what they’re so pissed off about].
My understanding is that they have been riled up by years of misinformation, and have been convinced that the Democrats are evil socialists, who are seeking to destroy the U.S. as they know it and their way of life: take away their rights, ban guns and Christianity, make their children gay or trans, etc., etc.
This is something that fascinates me as well. Though not the same event, during the stupid convoy in Ottawa, CBC interviewed some pro-convoy woman and the only justification she could offer was “things hafta change blah blah blah”
The elite, socialist, pedophile Democrats hate them, and wish to destroy everything they hold dear. Their rights are not just targeted they are in the meat grinder as we speak. The America we love is transforming into a deathscape where gay and trans people and BLM replace real Americans in wielding power, and the horrible oppression of white people will escalate.
The constitution, which protects white people’s rights based on any plain reading, is being shredded, and no election where the GOP loses is legitimate since true patriots naturally outnumber the vile, woke socialists.
I’m not kidding or exaggerating. That’s what they believe, reality be damned.
Yeah, they’re always so vague, as if we all know exactly what the problem is. “Border crises.” Really? “Socialism” No. Rights and respect for LGBTQ? Yes, but they never express how or why that’s a bad thing. I listen to Right Wing radio to try to understand, and they actually say (constantly) that the Democrat [sic] agenda is to destroy our civilization. For “reasons.” The Republicans didn’t challenge “the left” from FDR to Clinton, and now here we are. If we don’t stop the left now, it will be too late. This truly is the most important election of our lifetime. It’s so over the top and truly insane that I can’t wrap my head around it.
Let me just say to our insurrectionists wannabes, Things are pretty much the same as they’ve always been. You still can own assault rifles, you can still have your high school football coach pray after the game at mid field. You don’t have to be gay if you don’t want to be. You can drive a jacked up 4x4 pickup and fly your Trump flags. No one is silencing you. There is no pizza shop basement pedophile ring, and Biden isn’t hiding $5 million in bribes from Ukraine. You’re not paying more taxes than previous generations. Hell, even affirmative action is being phased out. Quit your bitching, go to work, have a cook out on Saturday afternoon and watch a game or two. PS: Trump is an asshole, and you don’t look good in a prison jumpsuit.
Exactly. If I can buy groceries and pay the rent then the rest is gravy. I know that that’s not the case for everybody and that it needs to be fixed, but some sort of mythical rebellion won’t do that.
You’re vastly overcomplicating it.
That the result of the 2020 presidential election was literally and actually falsified to give Joe Biden the whitehouse.
That’s the underlying complaint that drove the 6 Jan 2021 riot. Really. They falsely believed that Biden did what Trump actually attempted. Just THINK about what would have happened if Trump won and 50+% of democrats believed it was because he had successfully gotten fake electors counted, or successfully gotten Raffensburger to change vote totals on his say so. The violence wouldn’t have been restricted to Washington DC, that’s for sure.
If elections are successfully being falsified in our nation, that truly is an existential crisis for the country.
Of course, the 2020 results were not fake, Trump is a lying lier, and the folks in DC that day were deluded. But it shouldn’t be any kind of surprise given Trump’s huge lie and the number of people who believed it that some would resort to violence in that way.
I don’t think so. The election is certainly the trigger point, but it’s all based on the existential crisis they’ve manufactured. They must act now! Tomorrow will be too late! Etc., etc….
There are truly people suffering in the current economic environment. I doubt it’s more than we’ve seen before, but maybe it is. Regardless, those people on January 6th didn’t seem like the ones at the very bottom of the economic ladder with the most legitimate grievances. These guys (and gals) seems to have been caught up in the excitement of playing war, like the rest of did when we were 12 years old.
Here they talked of revolution.
Here it was they lit the flame.
Here they sang about `tomorrow’
And tomorrow never came.
Those may be reasons why people were primed to believe the lie, but given belief in the lie the result is not surprising. Surprisingly understated, even, given that they didn’t shoot or stab anybody in the process.
It’s a bad thing because, like their Dear Leader, they have a zero-sum mindset: any gain by The Others™ must be counterbalanced by a loss to themselves. Doesn’t explain the whole phenomenon of Trumpism, but I think it’s a significant component.
‘Equal rights for all does not mean fewer rights for you. It’s not pie.’
There’s a saying that a rising tide lifts all boats. ISTM that the insurrectionists’ mindset holds that if the tide rises and some boats rise with it, then a number of boats equal to the rising boats must sink.
That’s certainly true when law and custom have tethered some of the boats to very short anchor chains.
In 2000, the Supreme Court interfered in the vote count and Democrats didn’t riot.
In 2016, the FBI Director made prejudicial remarks about Clinton immediately before the election, Trump lost the popular vote, but took the White House anyway, and Democrats didn’t riot.
Trump and Senate Republicans stole at least two Supreme Court seats and Democrats didn’t riot.
To be fair, most Republicans didn’t riot this time, either. But Trump utilized a social fractional distillation process to concentrate the most dedicated and most delusional of his followers in one place at one time. The craziest, looniest, most paranoid suckers gathered into a spear and hurled at his target.
Those are in no way the same as if Trump’s election stealing efforts had succeeded. Especially
That is literally the opposite of ‘stealing an election’. That’s ‘winning an election’.
You left out the part where it said ‘In 2016, the FBI Director made prejudicial remarks about Clinton immediately before the election…’
The only thing that will convince many of these people that the election was fair and Biden won and Trump lost is if Trump concedes. He’d have to make up more lies to get out of the Big Lie, like “Oh, we have recalculated the results and yaknowwhat - it really does look like Biden beat me. My bad!” But, of course Trump will never do that since keeping the Big Lie going not only gives him power over these people (to incite riots and insurrections), but also is a great grift whenever he needs money, via Fleece_a_Rube dot com. There’s also the prospect some are so far gone with the delusion and worship even if Trump confesses that he lost in 2020 they won’t even believe him at this point.
I think this is right. Like when he told them to get the COVID vaccine and they booed him. If he “admits” he lost, they’ll just say he was forced to.
