But we shouldn’t get too carried away with moral relativism. We can agree on a valid principle that rebellion against tyranny may be justified, but that in a representative democracy power should only transfer peacefully through the democratic process. (We can then of course argue about what constitutes tyranny and representative democracy.)
Oh, definitely agreeing with that!
[ETA: And in any given historical case I may have a clear opinion as to who should have won. Though sometimes it’s neither of the supposed two sides; and sometimes it’s a lot blurrier than others.]
Benjamin Franklin: Mr. Dickinson, I’m surprised at you. A Rebellion is always legal in the First person – Our Rebellion . It’s only in the Third person – Their Rebellion – that it becomes illegal.
– Peter Stone 1776
I don’t know if Stone adapted that from anything Franklin said or wrote. I’ve only ever seen it as a quote from the play.
I suspect he made it up. Much as we would’ve liked it if Franklin showed the same sparkling wit in Congress that he showed in Poor Richard’s Almanac, by all reports he was pretty quiet and kept a low profile in Philadelphia

There is another thread dedicated to discussing the question of a difference between an insurrection and a revolution. Please take further discussion on this topic there. Thanks.
navarro must report to prison.
wouldn’t his appeal take longer than the 4 months sentence?
bannon was able to stay out of prison for his appeal. i believe his appeal is happening now.
Enjoy your new digs, Mr. Navarro!
So there’s a big meeting in Texas, and it’s starring some of the Jan 6th insurrectionists. Looks like the worms are getting more confident in crawling out from under their rocks after all of the arrests and convictions. I was hoping they’d stay scared.
This is fantastic news, and what should have happened to Bannon.
Yes, his four months will be over long before the appeal is done.
These types also run grifts, perhaps? They make shows here and there, make sure to stay legal, and just rake in the donations.
The big event in Eagle Pass; not what was intended by the organizers grifters. Not to mention the in-fighting between groups of the patriots doofuses.
I like this from the comments section after that article:
“I travelled to Texas to stop the migrant invasion and all I got was this lousy t-shirt.”
That’s what it’s all about - someone just wanting to make a sawbuck and these right-wing rubes are just easy marks.
If you serve four months and then have your sentence overturned on appeal, I believe they offer store credit.
Back around 2007*, an episode on “This American Life” was about those Minutemen border vigilantes. I remember how one of them got bored and just wanted to go home (to Michigan or whatever).
(*Has it been that long? Wow.)
It must have been this one:
I saw this article tonight about the defendents where they could remove charges of having gone against the administration of justice on 1/6. It’s hard for me to believe US govt prosecutors could miss it in all these cases.
The Republicans are releasing Jan 6th footage without blurring people’s faces after they said they would blur it out. I guess they don’t care if they get identified or not. The DOJ has the unblurred stuff anyway.
I hate to say it, but the ruling makes sense to me. Elections aren’t part of the justice system.
Luckily no convictions will be overturned — just the “enhanced” part of some sentences reduced.
Jan 6th rioter “shield grampy” admits to assaulting officers.
trump’s filing for immunity to the supreme court just dropped. 67 pages…on to reading.
A denial of criminal immunity would incapacitate
every future President with de facto blackmail and
extortion while in office, and condemn him to years of
post-office trauma at the hands of political opponents.
The threat of future prosecution and imprisonment
would become a political cudgel to influence the most
sensitive and controversial Presidential decisions,
taking away the strength, authority, and decisiveness
of the Presidency. The D.C. Circuit’s ruling, if allowed
to stand, “deeply wounds the President, by
substantially reducing the President’s ability to
protect himself.
it appears that trump is having post-office trauma right now. sad…
All we’ve got to do is keep him out of office one more time.
