Wednesday’s letter from the lawmakers said many of them and their staffers noticed “an extremely high number” of outside groups in the Capitol the day before the riot, which seemed odd since public tours ended in March of 2020 owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The lawmakers called for an investigation on the ties between the suspicious visitors on Jan. 5 and the riot the next day. In addition, the letter said the Jan. 5 visitors could’ve only gained access to the Capitol through a member of Congress or their staff.
The clear implication here is that some GOP house members had insurrectionists in the Capitol as their guests the day before the assault. It will be interesting to see what, if any, evidence of that exists in visitor logs, videos, etc. I hope this is followed up on vigorously.
That’s a start. Should have been many more. The Republicans keep yapping about how impeachment is just dividing the nation even more, but if all of the Republicans actually did the right thing and voted for it, this would, in itself, dramatically reduce the partisan divisions over the issue.
I quite like this argument about making the impeachment process itself more bipartisan. I think it would, as the author suggests, be a good idea for Pelosi to put a one of the Republicans who voted in favor of impeachment on the team that is going to argue the impeachment in the Senate. I also think it would be good for this team, during the impeachment trial, to call as witnesses some of the (rather large number of) conservative legal scholars who support impeachment.
You’re right. McConnell won’t do it. He told Schumer he won’t reconvene early. No explanation that I saw except that Trump wouldn’t be out before inauguration anyway.
Oh, I’m well aware we are only at the beginning of something. A large number of people see this as a religious crusade, and they’ve been groomed for this moment since childhood.
If you don’t know why I’m saying this, it goes to what I posted in , I believe, post 519 (or 518), my long post in that vicinity) of this thread.
Republicans thinking of badmouthing Trump are aware that a majority of Republicans support him. Up to 90%, although in that survey only 28% said they were Republicans with more people now claiming to be non-partisan or Independent.
However, many leading Republicans do not want to run against him in 2024. These may account, in part, for the ten Republicans who voted to impeach. Although it is perhaps unclear whether Trump would be found guilty, in legal terms, of inciting an imminent riot, it always makes sense not to sleep and sh** in the same place.
