7 Jan 2021 and beyond - the aftermath of the storming of the Capitol

I used to be a little bit conservative. I wasn’t ever conservative enough vote Republican or anything, but I’d consider it for a few seconds before deciding to vote D. I was always, as they say, socially liberal - but I held some fairly conservative economic positions.

Back in the early 2000’s, I was engaged to man who was more conservative than me. And he watched Fox News, a lot. It wasn’t nearly as noxious back then, but still.

Today I had the somewhat irreverent thought that if not for his tragic death from cancer in 2005, I’d probably be talking a lot about my Trump loving asshole ex-husband. And the more I think about it, the more I know it would be true. And he had an IQ of 151 or something.

Thanks for posting that - it’s an eye-opening article. There is a fascinating stew of denial, self-delusion and mendacity on display there.

Also, why is she hiding out and talking to a reporter, saying “I need to talk to an attorney,” instead of - you know - talking to an attorney??

Amphibian species like Mr. McConnell and others in the same genus need to bask in sunlight for a significant time, otherwise they are quickly tired and an easy target for predators, such as the Chinese White Heron, an invasive species from the Orient, now native to Kentucky. This aquatic tortoise is sought-after by poachers for it’s colorful shell, which makes a highly decorative ‘American Bluegrass’ ashtray. The best you can do for Mitch is to change his water and ensure his heat lamp is always running. A salt lick stone is, as always, appreciated.

She isn’t the brightest knife in the drawer?

I guess this vaguely fits here, as in the aftermath we are seeing broad sectors of people downplaying the significance of the insurrection:

TLDR version (though you really should read it) — homeschooling-friendly evangelicals actually favor the destruction of democracy.

You can’t buy this kind of publicity, Troy!

I’ve felt for some time that American evangelicals really favor a theocratic democracy similar to what Iran has.

Smartmatic is a bit upset about recent statements that certain people have made:

There aren’t many lawsuits that actually make me happy, but these sure do.

Democrats have requested the presence of one Donald J. Trump at the senate trial.

Now, of course, no sane lawyer would allow this to happen. But, still…

I sincerely hope that everyone gets their just deserts but I won’t be surprised if they don’t. I actually fear something like a three or more term president Marjorie Taylor Green establishing such things as the Dept of Alchemy and Ministry of Curses and Spells etc.

Notwithstanding that, I hope that the Smartmatics and Dominion lawsuits are both successful and permanently and financially wipe out some deserving parties.

Do we know if he has sane lawyers? It does seem like they get less and less sane as he replaces them. Presumably because he doesn’t like sane, or sane-adjacent, advice. But, he’s not using Sidney Powell for his impeachment defense team, I think, so maybe he’s moved just a tich more toward sanity in his representation choices.

Yep.

There is a reason I’ve been consistently referring to the Fundamentalist/ Evangelicals. While “evangelicalism” covers a lot of conservative religions, the fundamentalist groups are really different from the prosperity gospel evangelicals as well as the mainstream Liberty U type evangelicals.

But the fundamentalists believe in authoritarian power structures and think things like critical thinking and self-empowerment are literally the work of the devil. They like clear black/white, yes/no answers and consider nuance and shading to be weaknesses.

They have complete and utter contempt for democracy and the laws of men, and frequently commit massive organized benefit fraud. In some groups defrauding the government is doctrinal, the theory of “bleeding the beast”.

They are also insular to varying degrees, some of them cut themselves off completely from the outside world. Most of them meet all the qualifications of a cult.

There are probably hundreds of these groups out there, fundamentalist versions of the mainstream religions. .

Here’s a good Rolling Stone article, one of the best summaries I’ve seen. It’s a paywall site but they allow a few freebies and it’s still early in the month.

Why not? BFD. Let him talk-- Senate Republicans will never convict him. No matter what he says or doesn’t say.

Couldn’t he expose himself to perjury charges? Contempt?

Yes to both.

And why not go RICO on those who stormed the Capitol?: Exclusive: U.S. mulls using law designed to prosecute Mafia against Capitol rioters

I had a long held opinion that Democrats aren’t very good at political strategy, but I’m seriously rethinking. Their strategy post-inauguration (and post election in general, come to think of it) has been close to flawless.

And I’m sorry I ever doubted Joe Biden. I’m a full on Biden fan now, ever since the epic moment at a COVID press conference.
If you didn’t hear about it.
As the conference was ending Peter Douchey of Fox News (Steve Douchey’s kid), shouted out “What did you and Putin talk about?”
Without missing a beat, Joe said
“You. He sends his best”

Kind of puts the lie to the whole mental decline thing.

Great name!
