A disturbing scenario

I can’t seem to get this out of my mind. It disturbs me greatly. It’s not helped by the fact that two months ago, one of my collegue’s 16-year-old daughter left a party, passed out in a deep puddle, and drowned.

The players (Names changed):

Jerry - An honestly good guy. A bit shy, but when he opens up he consistantly displays high character.

Rick - A nice kid, but a bit arrogant and selfish. Jerry’s best friend since infancy.

Nancy - Some girl I’ve never met.

Nancy likes Rick. Jerry is secretly in love with Nancy. Rick could care less about her, but still wants to have sex with her, and doesn’t care who he hurts in the process. He and Nancy will openly flirt in front of Jerry, who is seriously bugged by it. He has spoken to Rick about it, and Rick says he understands and is sorry, but continues.

A month or two ago, Rick played an original song for a class project. He claims to have written it, but he actually stole it from Jerry.

Saturday night the three of them went to a concert. Except they didn’t actually end up going. Nancy had scored a bottle of vodka and thought that it would be a good idea to go into the woods and share it. Rick thought it was a great idea. Jerry was very uncomfortable with the idea and decided to walk home. (A good 2-3 miles.)

A little after midnight, he was awoken to find that Nancy’s mom was in his dad’s house. It seems that Nancy never made it home. Jerry led them to the woods where he believed her to be. They found her, passed out, pants around her ankles. Rick had left her there, and completely pickled, walked maybe 3-4 miles home. It’s a miracle that he didn’t get hit by a car. (When I was that age, I had a classmate die in that way.)

I sincerely hope that Nancy is alright, and I hope that Jerry reconsiders his friendships.

I guess I don’t understand what you’re saying. It looks like you’re saying Nancy drowned and you hope she’ll be fine.

No, she was just passed out.

But someone else her age drowned back in February.

Sounds like Rick & Nancy are two peas in a pod.
If Jerry doesn’t like their behavior he shouldn’t hang out with either of them.
Just because nice guy Jerry likes Nancy doesn’t mean he had dibbs on her. Nancy is an adult and can choose how she behaves and who she wants to mess around with.

How old are these folks? I’m guessing teenager?

15-16.

Jerry needs new friends. Best friends do not try to hook up with girls you like, especially when you’ve told them how you feel.

Yeah, Jerry needs to dismantle whatever halo he’s put on Nancy’s head and cut ties with both of those prizewinners. He may know more about Rick’s point of view if he’s closer to him, but however much it hurts Jerry’s image of her, he’s got to consider that Nancy is only up for some vodka and a screw, too. (Still, however drunk they both were that night, leaving someone drunk and half-naked puts Rick just slightly below Nancy on the crap scale. Assuming it was all consensual – which, if they’re teens, may not be the safest assumption.)

Agreed, though I’d hardly call her an adult.

But Rick is being really uncool about it. That’s no way to treat a friend.

My definition of a friend is someone who cares about me.

The way Rick treats Jerry shows he is not Jerry’s friend.

He seemed like a really sweet kid when I first met him, but the more I hear about him the less I like him. It’s really not an equal friendship, and he seems like a bit of a user.

It’s the leaving the naked girl in the woods thing that’s most disturbing to me, though. Did I mention that it got down into the low 40s that night?

Was he really drunk/out of it, or did he just not care?

Anyway. Both Nancy and Rick sound like they need to stop hitting the sauce quite so hard.

I have no idea whether he cared, but apparently he was quite drunk.

[Bolding Mine]

They need to quit hitting it altogether. At the ages of 15 and 16 drinking till you pass out or wander off is a giant red banner of proof that you shouldn’t be anywhere near booze.

I’m assuming the (presumed) sex was consensual and she passed out afterwards? Or did he take advantage of her passing out beforehand and then leave her there?

I don’t even know if sex occurred at all. I’ve been entertaining the idea that she passed out while peeing. I really hope that that’s the case, but I know that it very well may not be.

Considering that Nancy “liked” Rick and that he wanted to have sex with her, I was thinking at first that the vodka-in-the-woods might have been an intended prelude by her to sex. Then again, enough vodka in a guy and sex might have been impossible. And I don’t know how cold it was when they started drinking, vs. the overnight temps - people may do crazy stuff in the pursuit of nookie. I’m hoping your idea is the case.

Except that originally, Jerry was invited too.

Probably low 50s, for whatever it’s worth.

Good point. I think I glossed over the posts about their ages, and was thinking they were older–like college aged or so. But I suppose at any age, this is a disturbing scenario.

Bah, that’s ridiculous. Not commenting on the particular case since he does sound like an ass for leaving her in the woods (though I don’t know exactly what happened nor do I know the kid), but when it comes to hooking up it’s first come, first served. Telling your friend you like a certain girl doesn’t mean she’s reserved for you for all eternity.
