Morning all. Got my usual 8 hours of sleepage last night so hopefully the day will go well. Rain is done and temperature is supposed to be about 85F, so may get out sand enjoy the day.
Have to perform a burial of sorts today. I have a recessed front door, and a bird (don’t know what type, small) built a nest overhead on a beam there. Since I get very few visitors I let here be, and about a week ago I could see chicks in the nest! I was going to watch them without disturbing them, but about three days ago they stopped appearing, I found one dead on on the sidewalk under the nest and Momma hasn’t been seen for days. So something went wrong and now I need to clean up the site. At least I can find a use for my old snow shovel…
FCM, will think about chocolate, but afraid it would never make it to the post office with me…
JtC, poor old GG; hope he gets over the Bunny phobia.
Cool. One of these days I’ll tell you about my flights in Africa on small prop planes…
OK, been long enough since medication (one of my pills insists I take it on an empty stomach) so need to forage for some edibles. All y’all take care.
The davits are off the boat and in the truck. The aft cabin is wiped down as is the aft head. I vacuumed the main cabin and now I’m chilling, waiting for my daughter and the grands.
It’s a gorgeous day here, as you can see on my FB.
I was in and out of the licensing place in less than five minutes yesterday. After that, I took a trip to the nursery, bought a few plants, and ended up with a bonus free tomato plant that already has 'maters on it. I have no idea what kind of tomato it is, so I guess I’ll be surprised.
After that, I went to Target to pick up some items and watched with consternation as some guy opened many of the men’s deodorants and sniffed them. There were four of us watching with WTF looks. After that, I picked up lunch and headed home. I was back at the house by noon. I didn’t get much of anything done outside because it rained all day.
Right now the sun is peeking out, but it’s wet outside and the rain moves back in my 8:00 am this morning. Stupid rain.
Sounds like a predator bird or a cat got to your little birdy friends, Metal Mouse. That’s too bad. I don’t know what happened to my little junco nest, but it’s gone. It could well have been the neighbors’ cats that think they are welcome in my backyard. They are not and I wish people could keep their cats contained. I don’t hate cats, I’ve had some in the past, but I didn’t let them wander.
I actually got to fly a small plane for a few minutes many eons ago when I was dating a guy who had a pilot license. It was a couple of minutes. He rented a plane and we flew all over the South Puget Sound area, landing at the different airstrips located around here and even eating breakfast at one of them. It was a really cool date and thing to do.
No real plans for today. I’ll take the day as it comes.
Good morning, everyone! It got juuuust warm enough in the house last night that I turned the AC back on (I need a cold room for sleeping), but it’s currently 72°F and partly sunny with a light breeze, so the windows are open once more. Aaaaaahhh! Today and tomorrow should both be quite nice.
Earlier I payed my bills, which was fairly depressing due to the unexpected large emergency vet bill and an unexpected, even larger medical bill for myself (yes, I looked into it before paying). Don’t get me wrong: I know that I’m lucky to be able to pay without going into debt or going completely broke – those days weren’t that long ago, and I keenly remember what it was like – but it still stung to see my savings account suddenly depleted by nearly 70%. I’m just whinin’.
Next up today is my NAACP committee meeting, which starts at 11am. I kind of hate having a two-hour weekend Zoom meeting after a week of Zoom/Teams meetings, but such is life. At least the committee meetings are only once a month, and I mostly look forward to them. I actually have an item on the agenda today: I’ll be sharing a draft of a handout/flyer that I made. Our branch is going to have a table at a local Baptist church’s Juneteenth celebration, and in addition to generally helping staff the table I thought it might be good to have handouts about my committee. Today I’ll run the idea/design past the committee chair and any other members who attend, then I’ll send it to the branch’s president and communications chair to get their approval.
(I did express to the event organizer that I was aware of/not sure about the optics of a white person sitting behind an NAACP table on Juneteenth, but she said not to worry about it. So I won’t. I have a long history of being an ally to the LGBTQ+ community, but I started my NAACP work during the pandemic so I’m new to the “in public” side of it – and being white is a lot more noticeable than being straight! )
I’m still on the fence about going out tonight…that might be a game-time decision.
Me, too! Only I wasn’t dating the pilot; he was a co-worker/friend, and was getting hours for his flight instructor certification. Like you, it was just for a couple of minutes – long enough for him to take a picture of me concentrating very hard (our lives were in my hands!!). These were taken in 1996, I think.
The plane, with my co-worker doing a pre-flight check:
My Dad had a pilots license when I was a kid. When I was about 10, he took me up and let me work the controls for a bit.
I know Dad wasn’t stupid enough to put his life in a 10-year-old’s hands! There’s very little you can do to screw up while flying in open air, and if you do, the real pilot has plenty of time to recover.
My wife’s sister fosters kittens, and we went over last night to see the latest batch. They are the cutest ones she’s had yet!! Three 7-week-old brothers, and they are very loving and social. One of them took a liking to me for some reason and was glued to me the whole hole time. SIL said he looked all
Over the house for me after we left. Oh my god. Kitten therapy is the best cure for a crazy world!
I’ll post some pictures later; no time now, gotta get to irk.
I hope you feel better soon Nettie. The reading room gets old fast.
So long as it’s not like “mad cow”
BooFae One of the many things I like about the Dope is hearing about everyone’s adventures. Have a grand time wandering and at the show.
Swampy May I ask what Couch Chikin AKA Chikin Divan is?
I just mentally visited the Simpsons.
Sorry to hear about the chicks Metal Mouse. Good on you for letting them stay in the first place. We had porch chicks this year too. Their disappearance was also mysterious, unfortunately.
Wheelie I envy your kitten time.
Today I need to fill out a long questionnaire my back doctor asked me to do before Tuesday’s procedure. I will also be taking another run at our master house buying spreadsheet. It’s just a double-check out of an abundance of caution.
Akiko continues to be obsessed with food. She is developing amazing abilities to acquire food containers left “out of her reach”. Yesterday I caught her trying to get a pan cooling on the back of the stove. This is bad. I really hope we can wean her off of the steroids.
I’m dragging this morning and shall search for more coffee.
I got my single engine land pilot’s license on my 21st b-day (01/23/1975.) Then I got my instrument rating some months later. Then in Oct of 1978, roughly 4 hours short of getting my commercial license, I quit flying - I grounded myself due to some life issues, planning to resume flying eventually.
I never did. I had about 275 total hours. Sometimes I miss it, but I couldn’t afford it these days. So now we have a boat.
Daughter took the grands swimming. We’re all chilling on the boat at the moment. Home soon.
Well, I quit. Literally walked off in the middle of my shift.
I texted one of the guys I was working with to apologize, and he said he and three other people quit thirty minutes after I did.
If that’s true, that’s amazing.
Word gets around fast, I already heard from another guy who’s been fired from here, offering me a (better paying) job.
He’s the one who decided to cozy up to me the whole evening. I would claim him in a minute, but we have two little girls who would be less than thrilled with the prospect.
These three will have no trouble getting adopted though, which is kind of the whole point.
Watching the concert at Buckingham Palace. On teevee, not at the actual palace. Queen rocked and so far everyone else is lame. Why was Sir Paul not invited.
I like day drinking while on vacation. I had a large rum and Diet Coke at 3pm.
It does. Still not back to “normal” today, either.
Buddy pulled a good one. I went (back) to bed after Buddy left around 8:30. DH was up by then, and told me when I got up that Buddy had come back in. DH did not remember the cat’s departure and wondered if he was hiding somewhere. I shook the treat jar, and here came Allie running into the kitchen from the living room.
And Buddy emerged from a kitchen cabinet. Totally calm. “Oh, hi. You wanted me? You wanted to give me treats?”
A Home Despot run for catproofing for the cabinets has become necessary, apparently. Nosing around is one thing, hiding in there for hours and potentially getting himself in a bad situation (e.g. heavy stuff outside that door and he can’t get out if he needs to) is another. OK, yeah, we’d definitely hear him if he had gotten himself into a situation that upset him, but still…
SQUEE!!! The one without white on the chin looks to me like baby Buddy!
May I ask what set that off, and are you OK?
Another cat moment: DH went to pick Allie up to hug her (it’s apparently National Hug Your Cat Day), and she protested. Buddy jumped out of my arms and went running to check on her.
