Your Weebl is flippin’ awesome.

Just a sample.
You’re welcome.
Can’t help you there. I looked. He’s definitely not here.
Mork - you are hopelessly talented.
Good luck with the LSATs, Queenie.
LOUNE, I think the answer is: learn to bake your own pie. Can gonzomax or the female birth giver help with this?
ME - I really enjoy the concert series. It’s free. Everyone has fun, so you can people-watch AND listen to the concert. And it’s just a few minutes walk from my house.
Now…really…I’m off to bed.
GT
GT, they’re for all week, so don’t sweat it!
Roo - Eh, I’m sure she’ll be okay. She’s not irresponsible or anything, but she does tend to move through life in a haze of smoke. (Once she sent me her cell phone number over email, but when I called the number it turned out to be her ex. )
I love your Weebl, Mork!
I should grade some papers, then try to get to bed early. I have some vague ideas for tomorrow’s class (we talked about cosmetic surgery last time, so I’ll scrap some more articles together and give out an essay assignment).
Ooh, Alice might drive back up and kick my ass? Okay, now I AM scared! She’s little but she’s deeply scary!
Meeks, thanks for the neat videos! I haven’t had time to watch them all (yet), but I never get tired of seeing that gorgeous temple. Especially since I was born just down the road from it. My dad must have taken at least a million pictures of it, and who could blame him? I don’t think there’s another temple like it in the world. If you go to the Wikipedia page about it and click on the photo, you can view it in a high resolution and zoom in close enough to see the elaborate carving. Truly stunning!
I second the vote that highway driving is really not that bad, LiLi. In fact, I usually find it far less stressful than city driving, especially on controlled access highways (with a few notable exceptions, I-95 being high on the list and the Washington Beltway always at the top of any list of ghastly driving). If you’re driving midday, you won’t be hitting heavy traffic, and you can enjoy the sights and some good music and just kick back and relax. It sounds like your mom is just scared of highway driving. I have a friend in Kitchener who’s the same way as your mom – she’s willing to drive in downtown Toronto but not on the highways to get there! Go figure. (Of course, I’ve also known two people who are so scared of left turns they’ll go miles out of their way to avoid them. I know some weird people.)
Okay, okay, I’m going back to work before my daughter kicks my ass!
BOOM! We have three or four thunderstorms got through here tonight. You folks have been busy while I was a t work.
Meeks, cool videos. The cat fight needed pudding though.
Mork, great Weebl. [sub][sub][sub]wanker[/sub][/sub][/sub].
LiLi, highway driving isn’t so bad. I have never had any problems.
Still haven’t gone to bed. What else is new? Thanks for the compliments. Okay, for make benefit of glorious character art (and for LOUNE) I shall do a quick 'n dirty tutorial.
First, you need your brushes. We’ll use the basics.
▐▀▄▌░▒▓█
Thanks to Unicode, these are pretty much a part of most standard fonts on most systems. I’m pretty sure Macs can see them. I’m not sure about the various Linux flavours. These are not the only characters available, though they’re probably the most useful. You can see the whole list in your character map. (On Windows, click start->programs->accessories->system tools->character map and browse what’s available there. Besides actual graphically-oriented chraracters, there wil also be lots of international and mathematical characters that can, with some creativity, be used in your little ANSI-macros. I don’t know how to access a character map on other systems, though, but I’m sure it’s possible.)
Okay, now that we have our basic “brushes” we can draw something with text. To ensure spacing that is proportionate to our block characters, I usually make a grid using the lightest shading block above, like so:
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░

░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
Voila! A photonic canvas. Now we can use the shaping blocks {▐▀█▄▌} to draw. I generally paste those first base characters somewhere so I have easy access to them, and then highlight and use copy (control-C) on the character I want to use, and repeat for new characters. Then I highlight the area I want to paint over and paste (control-V) the characters into place. So we’ll start on Weebl:
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
░░░░░░░▄▄░░░░░░
░░░░░▄████▄░░░░
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░

░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░

As you can see we’ve got his crown done. Now we’ll add some happy little tre-- uh… I mean, the rest of his eggy body.

[sup]No. 1 - The Larch[/sup]
Great! Only Weebl’s not African-American. {Spoiler} box to the rescue! (Braces used to break coding) We’ll just spoiler-box Weebl! But wait … that’ll make him disappear. That’s no good. First, therefore, we have to change the colours:
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
░░░░░░{color=white}▄▄{/color}░░░░░░░
░░░░{color=white}▄████▄{/color}░░░░░
░░░{color=white}████████{/color}░░░░
░░{color=white}▐█████{/color}{color=gray}>{/color}{color=white}█{/color}{color=gray}<{/color}{color=white}▌{/color}░░░
░░{color=white}██████████{/color}░░░
░░{color=white}▀▀██████▀▀{/color}░░░
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
░░{color=white}██▄▄▄▄▄▄██{/color}░░░
░░{color=white}▐████████▌{/color}░░░
░░░{color=white}▀██████▀{/color}░░░░
░░░░░░{color=white}▀▀{/color}░░░░░░░
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
{size=7}{color=white}{b}{i}PIE!{/i}{/b}{/color}{/size}
- Note that I didn’t colour the “canvas.” In the spoiler box, it will remain black, effectively disappearing, leaving Weebl all by himself.
- Note the many colour changes around his eyes to make sure they get coloured independently. Also the colour change between the eyes to make sure the center bit gets turned back to white.
- Also note the addition of his large, bolded, italicized, white PIE! at the bottom.
Okay! Now we can spoiler-box him.
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
░░░░░░▄▄░░░░░░░
░░░░▄████▄░░░░░
░░░████████░░░░
░░▐█████>█<▌░░░
░░██████████░░░
░░▀▀██████▀▀░░░
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
░░██▄▄▄▄▄▄██░░░
░░▐████████▌░░░
░░░▀██████▀░░░░
░░░░░░▀▀░░░░░░░
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
PIE!
Now, I can remove the excess “canvas” above, below, and to the right of Weebl if I want (and am not too lazy to do so). If I wanted to use the {center} tags, though, they should be left in, otherwise the centering will make him all warped.
Now, if you’re doing to draw something and do not need to use the colour white, use a {code} box instead. Depending on your OS and default font, this will often make the thin lines on each line of the “canvas” disappear and make it look more solid:
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
░░░░░░▄▄░░░░░░░
░░░░▄████▄░░░░░
░░░████████░░░░
░░▐█████>█<▌░░░
░░██████████░░░
░░▀▀██████▀▀░░░
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
░░██▄▄▄▄▄▄██░░░
░░▐████████▌░░░
░░░▀██████▀░░░░
░░░░░░▀▀░░░░░░░
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
Or it may not. My home PC under Firefox doesn’t, but my work PC under Firefox does. Go figure.
So there’s your SDMB art class for the day. Next week, we’ll draw Bob Ross.
For now though I really am going to bed this time.
Glad to hear it. I like her already. She’s made me laugh twice in one day and I don’t even know her. I, however, would be banging my head against the wall if I were the recipient. You’re a far better person than I.
**
Mork**, I too love the graphic. But why is everyone calling it a Weebl? He looks like a mummy to me.
My Aunt Mary brought pie when we visited my parents last year.
Queenie, thanks!! That’s hilarious. I had no idea there was so much history to that. I must be missing at least half the in-jokes around here.
**
doggio**, I always bring pie when I get invited to parties. I’ve never seen them do the Weebl thing though.
My Grandma used to make me pecan pie when I visited. She told me last time though I’d have to start making the pie. (So) when (I) come back, (I will) bring pie.
Heff: It took me forever to get it too, but now I’m a Weebl addict.
I love pecan pie. Mmmmmmm. My mom makes pecan pie. Ouch, now I miss her.
I posted my grandma’s recipe a while back. Of course when you make it yourself it’s never the same.
It’s Wednesday morning (about 8:30am) and I have been up since 4:45am.
Howdy all - too much talk of pie and brownies for a woman restricted to white rice and boiled eggs! STOP PLEASE!!!
Well, Noor’s virus has decided it’s not done yet and reannounced itself with a vengeance this morning. She puked again today for the first time since Sunday (and just after I had given her her anti-convulsant elixir! ), then exploded with diarrhoea that had the consistency and colour of water mixed with turmeric-coloured porridge!!!
So I am waiting for her Majesty the paediatrician to start work (9am, apparently) so I can get Noor’s test results and find out what to do next (i.e. go back to the hospital or just stop formula feeding again and go back to rehydration salts for the time being).
Queenie, I hope being a lawyer makes you happy - Og knows it has been an up and down career choice for me - probably more so because of a string of crappy, tin-pot God wannabe bosses than anything else!
Mika, I wish I could just cut my own hair. I have very fine, very curly (aka ringlets) hair that needs an expert hairdresser to get it to look sane. So far, in the 9 years I have been living in Bahrain, I haven’t been game to get my hair cut here. I just wait the 18 or so months between trips home to Australia, for my stylist in Brisbane to do it!
Oh well, back to the crap fest! Ciao folks!
I’m so sorry to hear about Noor, Dotty! Poor baby. Hope she gets better soon.
Ack, someone make me go to bed. Not going to bed til 2am is proving to be a difficult habit to break.
ETA: Your Grace, I thank thee for the recipe. Maybe I’ll give it a try this weekend.
Sorry, I can’t help with that. I’m just as bad. Good thing I don’t have to get up too early. I think 2 am is just about the right time to go to bed, but that doesn’t work so well if you have to go to work at 8.
swampy and Special1, when are you coming out to play? I have to go to bed soon. :::tapping foot:::
Haze, I’ve been noticing this great creativity and motivation at about 12:30 am. on some mornings. Have you experienced this? Or any of you other mumpers? Cause I’m going to be changing schedules soon and am wondering if my creativity and motivation will then disappear forever. . . never to return. (to the tune of my little violins)
I’m just glad I’m off tomorrow, because I’m still up.
Roo, my greatest motivation came from second hand Sharpie fumes(I used to have to write a lot of ad signs).
**Haze **-- I like the idea of all of us being Humpers. And I’m willing to go back to bed this morning if you’ll come along with me
{{{Dotty}}} Yeah, probably went back on Formula a bit soon. I’m sure Noor will be OK, though.
**Roo **-- Hold on to your hair, here I am! Is **swampy **here too? ::looks around worriedly::
Good morning to all the Eurasian Mumpers/Humpers (that would be Nava, **Dotty **and BooFae? Did I miss anybody?)
And Good Night to all the American ones.
And yes, Roo, you still get a **Special **good night. Just because! And I’ll consider crawling back to bed with you for company, too
I managed to pull a back muscle yesterday… Ouch! barely got any sleep (hence my desire to crawl back into bed :() and it still hurts to stand up straight. I’m hoping it will loosen up sometime during the day or tonight will be interesting, too. And we’re going on a long weekend tomorrow, so I better d**n well be better by then! Or else!!!
