I wasn’t able to get to a computer for any significant time for the last couple of days so I’m not even going to try to catch up. I’m going to assume that everyone had a nice Thanksgiving and no limbs or vital organs were lost.
My dad came down on Thursday and we had our traditional Thanksgiving Lasagna. I decided to make my own MST3K Turkey Day Marathon with my season 1 dvds so that was on in the background while my dad and I Visited and the dog got thoroughly spoiled with pettin’s. Every hour or so I had to go help my ex-fiance/now-friend clear out the office–he’s turning it into his bedroom. That was finally finished yesterday except for some boxes in the hallway that he has to take to the shed.
Yesterday morning I dragged my next-door neighbors over to meet my dad. They’ve adopted me over the last few months and I wanted both sets of “parents” to meet. They hit it off with my dad over breakfast. I was pleased. I also told my dad about the serious car trouble I’ve been having over the last year* and he offered to help me get a newish car.
For the second time in my life, I went shopping on Black Friday. I had to get some new pillows and my friend needed some new underwear (he left his in Alberta). I spent the rest of the day straightening my rearranged room and reading. Nice and relaxing right before the two-week “OMG I have to get all my papers done” mad dash.
Oh, and my new pillows are wonderful. I slept so comfortably last night. To hell with you, feather pillows! Only fiber-fill for me from now on!
*My car died last year when the whole fuel system went out. EF/NF and my neighbor were helping me replace the parts when we found out that a lot more than the fuel system was going out. It’s thirteen years old and has almost 200K miles on it, I think it’s time for a new one.
Thanks for the pages, gt, we got sent a copy of the stuff from Virgin’s site with our tickets and stuff. I’m sure it’ll be ok, I only have small 10ml containers so they should be fine. The only thing that kinda makes me laugh is that they say medications should be unpacked (ie, put the meds in the bag but not the box they come in) however they also say it would be helpful if the pharmacy label is visible - but over here they stick that kind of thing on the packaging! I think I’ll take the packaging flattened out in my bag anyway, that way everything’s covered.
I don’t mind taking on the MMP when I get back, but the earliest one I can manage will be 10th December. Photos…hmmm…I’ll need my camera then, won’t I?
Hi everybody! 100+ posts to catch up on , so I’m Just. Not. Even. Trying… From the little skimming I did, I gather all or at least most of you 'Murkins enjoyed the Turkey Day.
I ate some turkey over the weekend too, but it doesn’t count since turkey is probably the most-frequently-eaten meat in this country.
Spent the weekend in Jerusalem, two nights of a mid-nothing getaway just because we could… spend some time with SpecialTeen (this weekend was a stay-at-school for her, but they let them out within city limits on their own cognizance), pigged out at a pair of good restaurants, visited the Old City (Western [wailing] Wall, Gethsemane, Dormitian Abbey…) – did you know that, similar to Armageddon being derived from the very real place har Megiddo, one of the words for Hell – Gehenna – is derived from the very real Gey Ben-Hinom, or “The valley of the Son of Hinom”?
That was my weekend – very relaxing on the whole. Tomorrow I get to go back to Jerusalem again – my dad is undergoing a hip replacement there on Monday, and I’m taking him there tomorrow to get him checked in to the hospital, and start making arrangements for his post-op physiotherapy.
Then I get to go to Jerusalem on Tuesday again – wife has some business there and we’ll pay my dad a visit while I’m there (my two siblings will cover visiting him on Monday and on Tuesday morning) – good thing it’s all of 40 miles from Tel-Aviv to Jerusalem; we only think it’s a big deal because the country is so small anything over a 30-mile drive is “far!”
<jealous eyes at BooFae> I mean, I don’t want to go to Vegas, but now there is a house near London that will be empty and I can’t go over there! I would have taken care of your critters, too.
Going to the bank for $ soon and then tomorrow, the last of the Xmas shopping will be done. I slept like a dream. Wonderful. I did have an odd dream about an Aunt Fence and exams–I got a 27 on the math part (no idea if that is good or not), but the written exam, I wrote on the backs of my old school photos–the examiner was ticked! I was to write a “creative” piece and I did–all about Aunt Fence who I was told was Mexican (Fence apparently being a Mexican name in my dreamworld), so I wrote a spooky story. There was a bathtub in there as well.
Who needs drugs when I can fall asleep and be entertained for hours?
Well, damn, my coffee maker is dying a slooooow death.
It’s been shutting itself off for quite some time now, but today it didn’t ding when the coffee was done brewing. It also shut itself down entirely. I turned the warming plate back on, and it shut itself off immediately. I’m sure the next step in its slow demise is for it to quit brewing the coffee. I guess that means I better buy a new coffee maker today too. Damn, we’ve only had it for just over four years. They just don’t make stuff like they used to.
I need to get in the shower and cleaned up. Talk to you all later.
Oh, and Boo-Fae, enjoy your trip! I hope you win big!
I’m uploading pictures right now and cleaning my home office. My old PC is slow. On the other hand it’s 9 years old and still works quite well, so there’s that.
Reference bookshelf is all clean and about to be added to my GoodReads shelf.
Yay for a volunteer for Monday! I’ll add you for December 10, BooFae. I can do December 3rd, unless someone else has a burning interest in that date.
Hi, everybody. Good to see so many folks back after turkey and other overstuffings.
It’s not quite as chilly here this morning as at Fairy Chat Estates, but it’s still cool enough for me. And presumably for the Idiots; fortunately, it being the weekend, Papa Tigs has idiot entertainment duty.
We’ve both been trying to think of something we’d like the other to give us for Christmas, and so far we’re both coming up empty. Other than a winning lottery ticket, obviously. So we’ve decided to start setting money aside instead towards a nice vacation – probably the trip to the big pow wow in Wisconsin that Dean’s ex-boss, who’s a member of the Chippewa Tribe, has invited us to next year. If we do end up going to that, I’ll definitely be taking MMP duty afterwards; getting to see a genuine pow wow as invited guests of a tribe’s medicine family? Waaaaaaay cool in my book! But that’s next year.
Have a blast in Vegas, BooFae! I’m envious; I haven’t been in years, but when I lived in Lalaland, I used to have to drive up there occasionally for Tax Court calendars. So I’d have an excuse to hang out and have fun when court wasn’t in session. I’ll never forget the afternoon I joined a woman in my one and only time playing roulette; it was in one of the older, cheap casinos, and for some reason the number 29 kept coming up. So she showed me how to play roulette, and following her lead on 29, I played $5 successfully all afternoon. We had a blast. I’ve never played roulette again; I figure that since it has the worst odds in the house, I got my lifetime’s worth of entertainment from that $5.
Off to do something constructive. Don’t have too much fun this weekend, everybody!
Ok, so I scanned in a couple of pics of da bear as a cub onto mom’s computer with the idea of sending ‘em to my email so’s I could show y’all. I cannot get mom’s ISP to cooperate. I keep gettin’ error messages. BIL and I are goin’ to see if we can figure it out this afternoon… grrrrrrr…
Ok, time to get back to mom’s cause soon it will be time to feast. I should squeeze in a nap before tonight’s [del]drunken brawl[/del] party too.
Driving by to say that I’m glad y’all had great holidays and to say I did too, dammit.
Our T-Day tradition is Thanksgiving at Disney with my whole family. Of course, that’s just three of us, but there you go. Went to MGM Studios, stuffed ourselves silly at a Disney buffet, and waddled around the park for a while.
We came home, but I had to miss one of my personal Thanksgiving traditions – the bar crawl in the evening. All of my friends (after having had enough of their families) go out to get absolutely trashed, but this year I had to be at work at 6a yesterday, so I bedded early. So we all went out last night instead.
Now I have a headache and a 10-hour shift ahead of me today and tomorrow, but that’s OK. This is one of our slowest weekends of the year. Everyone’s at the mall and no one wants to think about buying or cooking food.
Two weeks of calmness, then we swing back up for Christmas. The best thing about Christmas is that when it’s over, so are the 24/7 holiday songs at work. If I have to listen to selections from the Jackson 5 Christmas album much longer, I may kill somebody.
I am up as Libby woke me up at 5AM by walking across my face so I snoozed for a bit and I am still in my jammies. I had a busy day yesterday. I made the foolish decision to go to Best Buy to look at laptops for my Dad’s Christmas present. There was pushing an shoving and mile long queues! I did a quick U-turn and ran away quickly. So I still have that to do.
I did go to the maul and got a load of new clothes on buy-one-get-one-free!! And I got a couple of ideas for my sisters present. I then came home and cleaned half my house - I only have my bedroom and bathroom to clean today. I then put up the Christmas tree and decorations. I am going to head out in a bit once I have breakfasted and showered to run some errands then I may try to put up outside lights…or not
Dinner with either be pizza or if I can be bothered I might make lasagne…
I managed to get my daughter an appointment for a haircut, but her usual stylist wasn’t working today; so my daughter agreed to use someone else. I hope she does a good job.
We’re leaving in about 30 minutes. It’s not nearly as cold today as it was yesterday, but it’s definitely grey outside. At least I won’t need to scrape frost from my car windows.
More turkey leftovers for chop-chop tonight. We’ll have to have something else tomorrow night because I’m more than sick of it.
I feel so accomplished! Also, I want to buy a laptop to replace my desktop. Reading your post, ems, I’m thinking I’ll order something from Dell. But I’ll start by making sure that everything I have in media that won’t work after I dump my desktop is saved to the external hard drive. And maybe I’ll clean up my documents folder and take inventory of the stuff I have on the desktop too. That’ll probably slow me down.
Hope the daughter’s haircut works out well, Taters. swampy do you have a flash drive that you could save the pictures down to so that you can take them home and upload from there? The other trick I’ve used is to attach a picture(s) to a draft of an e-mail then download from there. (Probably won’t work in your case if you’re having trouble uploading to a photo site.
Did I mention I really liked your kid pic, MBG? (I’m pretty sure I didn’t.) Also, how was Thanksgiving with BusKid?
I was planning to go shopping in the arts district near downtown Columbus, but I’m getting so much done that I think I’ll put that off and go to our local art hop tonight.
I’ve got some pics to share, but no peoples are featured in any of them. It’s the latest batch that my kiln spewed forth, plus 10 old pieces that my mom and I adorned with holiday arrangements. I just finished sorting and packing for the show next week - there are 5 boxes, plus a tote, plus a basket holding the arrangements. That’s a lot of stuff for an 8’ table, but I’m sure I’ll figure something out.
**FCD ** fixed the mount for our mailbox - I’m going to put a planter around its base and stick some bulbs in there. I should probably get that done right away.
Time to feed the critters, then feed myself. And stoke a fire. Off I go!
Wow, FCM! Those are awesome! The penguin made me smile!
I’ve been so lazy today. A couple of loads of clothes, and a trip to the grocery store, cleaners, and drugstore. Puttering on the 'puter, mostly. And the damn idiots went on an unauthorized jaunt around the neighborhood - Mr Rebo caught up with them down the street. I couldn’t find them!
We’re having pepper steak, rice, and salad for din-din tonight. I’m all turkeyed out.
Your pottery just gets better and better, FCM! You clearly have a talent. Whether you believe it or not.
I hate, hate, HATE people who make up words. Like “calendarize.” You don’t “calendarize” something, you put it on the (*&@# calendar. Stupid people who make up words. Argh!
Thanks - I’m really proud of that penguin. I bought a crappy little votive holder shaped like a penguin and used it as a reference. He was a lot of fun to make. So were the snowfolk, although the 3 without scarves had them - unfortunately, the scarves cracked as they dried, so I had to remove them. I’m trying to decide whether to use knitted/crocheted scarves or just leave them with nekkid necks.
Got a fire going - as I cleaned out last night’s ashes, I noticed the firebrick in the insert were still warm. Can’t wait till we can get a newer, more efficient insert - my mom’s insert kept most of the house warm - when it was going full blast, you couldn’t sit in the living room without sweating!
Plans for tomorrow - without a doubt - gotta get the leaves up! It shouldn’t take but a couple of hours with the 2 of us attacking it. Maybe I’ll even build my little planter and get some bulbs. Maybe…
