A response to Scylla that I can't make in MPSIMS

Wussies. I had a MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. lunchbox. The images were drawn by Mort Drucker, of MAD magazine fame.

You know it!

Well, I had (and still have) a 1967 Lost in Space lunchbox. It’s apparently got some value, but would be worth more if I still had the Thermos.

in that case the kid would probably be moping around, not raising hell. Meltdowns are far more likely due to sugar-induced frenzy, from an indulgent parent filling its lunchbox with Pop-Tarts and Kiddylicious Apple Fruit Wriggles*.

What Scylla should’ve done was calmly lecture the mom on how she needed to put only healthy treats in the little brat’s lunchbox and not subject him to elevated lifetime risks of obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

*an actual product, containing two teaspoons of sugar per package.

I love you, too. C’mere for huggles.

When was the last time you were around a hungry child?

So, Loach closed the original thread because I called myself a shithead and other people could not respond in kind. That’s unexpected, but I guess that’s fair and reasonable.

What’s not reasonable is that he Said that I was celebrating being a shithead.
That’s not true. I was just using some rhetorical judo. It’s hard to defend yourself when people are basically telling you you are a piece of shit. It’s also tiresome. When people take that route, I just generally agree with them and say “sure, I’m a total piece of shit, whatever.” It sort of takes the power away, shows that I am aware that I am flawed (when did it become anathema to present yourself in a less than favorable light on the internet, and why must we all pretend we are blameless saints?)

Anyway, I mildly disagree with the decision and wish it was still open.

Perhaps you are confusing wanting a snack with symptoms of low blood sugar, which include:

extreme hunger (some kids complain of a gnawing stomachache or “hunger pain”)
shakiness or tremors.
rapid heart rate.
cold sweat.
a pale, gray skin color.
headache.
moodiness or crankiness/irritability.
drowsiness.

Some little ass pains in a Target loudly demanding lunch boxes from random strangers might be clinically hypoglycemic, but they are likely in the minority.

My son used to have full on melt downs if he didn’t have breakfast first thing when he was a preschooler. The trigger was irrelevant. The lack of food, leading to low blood sugar made him unable to regulate his emotions. But if he had breakfast when he got up he was fine. Took us way too long to figure out what was going on and once we did we were able to manage the situation much better.

And sugar high hyperactivity is a myth.

It was funny you should ask, I was at the Orphanage last week, preparing meals for the poor children because, you know, they always have really good donations at the orphanage. If you are preparing the food, than you get first pick and can either eat it yourself, or take it home for later, or sell it. It’s a really good deal and you feel good because you are helping out.

Anyhow, after we were done taking what we wanted we made this thin gruel over what was left and every orphan got one generous serving. We don’t want them to get fat, and if you feed them too much they have excess energy and are difficult to control. It’s always best when they are in this mild hunger stupor. Makes things run smooth.

So, i’m Working my ass off for these ungrateful kids, and just got finished and this one brat walks up and he’s like “Please Sir, I want some more?”
I was stupefied! I hit him with the ladle and we held a conference over what to do. We could not tolerate somebody like that so what we did was put a bill on the door and offered $50 incentive to anyone who would take the brat off our hands.

When was the last time you dealt with a hungry child?

I don’t remember what was on the lunchbox. It had orange borders.

I think it was this one:

You are tiresome.

Exactly. Jackmanii’s supercilious quoting of the definition of hypoglycemia, not apparently noticing that it includes moodiness, or that it’s not the only way that food can affect mood, or realizing that I listed low blood sugar as one of several possible causes of childhood meltdowns, is pretty clear evidence that he doesn’t actually spend any time around hungry kids. But hey, it’s good to hear from everyone–everyone’s opinion, no matter how pig-ignorant, is valuable!

Scylla’s attempt at humor–good lord.

For reals.

I had this lunchbox as a kid:

I have fond memories of that metal lunchbox because I recall once my neighborhood bully (who was twice my size) demanded I give it to him, and I hit him in the face with it and made him cry.

I’m sure he kicked my ass later but making him cry for once felt good at the time. (I wasn’t generally a violent kid and I’m definitely not as an adult but I did stand up for myself on rare occasions.)

If you are going to smack somebody with a lunchbox that’s the one to do it with.

Wait, so you’re saying low blood sugar can cause moodiness or crankiness/irritability, and thus isn’t the reason for a meltdown in public?

I THINK he’s saying that when I use “low blood sugar” as a shorthand for “hasn’t eaten recently and it’s affecting the mood in a negative way,” I’m missing the fact that IT’S A MEDICAL TERM FOR PEOPLE WITH DIABETES, or at least “hypoglycemia” is, and that a minority of children having a meltdown in public are diabetic, so I’m a dummy. So there’s that.

I used to me my son’s school bus when he was in kindergarten with a can of pediasure because he’d be shaking from low blood sugar. He wasn’t a big eater and struggled in kindergarten with distractions during their way too short lunch period. Otherwise he would have a really awful afternoon. Thank goodness we didn’t just decide he was a brat and scare him into a meltdown but realized that something physiological was going on.

Took a couple months but he settled into a routine in school and was fine. He was 5. He just needed our help.

Getting hangry is a real thing. I’ve experienced it before. It’s even in Merriam-Webster now:

It happens to kids and adults alike. Here’s a study on the mechanism behind being hangry:

I found it interesting that the stressed rats with low blood sugar responded positively to an antidepressant.

Feel free to keep pretending you didn’t post this anti-semitic pile of bullshit.
