A Stormy MMP

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN 'Tis 61 Amurrkin out and cloudy with a predicted high of 76 with rain/tstorms/apocalypse at some point. Fine by us 'cause we have no where we want or need to be, thus we shall remain inside and dry. Sloth is high on today’s agenda. Sup shall be chikin nachos. YUM!

Chikins, in addition to bein’ some of the stoopidest creatures on Earth can also be very mean. A chikin will walk up to you and peck you out of spite.

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah.

Happy Thursday Y’all!

Good morning.

doggio, I’m so sorry about Alex Catt.

It’s currently 48 degrees with rainfall. The expected high is around 55 degrees, and rain is supposed to fall most of the day. Another atmospheric river has arrived so that rivers will flood; there is a much higher risk of landslides since the soil is already completely waterlogged and unstable, and the mountain passes will see a little snow accumulation.

I worked at the office yesterday but spent most of the day cleaning, reorganizing, and tossing more crap into the dumpster there. I had a couple of meetings and met my son for lunch at Hash, a restaurant less than two miles from the office. They serve hash and other breakfast foods.

The commute home was relatively smooth, for once.

All the same, I have just been feeling exhausted and can’t seem to catch up on my rest. I went to bed at 7:30 last night. I woke up numerous times during the night. Surprisingly, it was not because of my husband. I finally gave up and got out of bed at 3:15 this morning.

I work today and then have a four-day weekend.

MIL’s nickname is Chick - when she was a little girl, a baby chick bit her, and she smashed it! :open_mouth: It’s especially funny because she’s such an animal lover - she rescued and raised a baby squirrel that she’d found on the ground. But in the early days, she was a killer!!!

my foster parents raised chickens and rabbits for eating and pets, the first experience I had there was it was my and my brother’s job to feed water and gather the eggs which we liked to do … . but there was this one chicken that was mean as hell chased clawed and bit us to the point my younger brother became too scared to go in … and I knew she was eating the eggs too.

well one Saturday when foster mom was gone for the evening we were sort of playing with the separated baby chicks and FD comes over and said hey boys how about fried chicken for dinner I was like …heck yeah and he said what about that one I’m like well that one ok but what about fatty over there he smiled and said knew you were going to pick that one …

he grabs her by the neck takes 5 steps to a stump and axe … and lops the head off without warning or anything …little bros had a fit as we learned that chickens do run with their heads off…

he gives us some gloves and some pliers and puts the bird thing in a pan boiling water and that’s how I learned chicken plucking sucks lol that and a few other experiences cured me of being sentimental about poultry

Keep the chicken stories coming! The only one I’ve got is from my mom, who used to watch her neighbor swing them around by their necks to break them, then smack them down on the stump with a cleaver. I’m glad I didn’t see that. Apparently the results were delicious.

I’m inordinately proud of myself for having both done my laundry AND folded it yesterday, all in the same day! I didn’t know what to do with myself afterward.

Overlyboy is finishing his finals today and both overlyboy and overlygirl have a half day, then another four and a half day weekend. MLK Day I get. The remaining day and a half so soon after winter break makes me wonder if they’re actually taking them to school or if maybe they’re just hanging out at the Y for a while. They seem to be learning things.

Next week is the big 8-week scan with mom. My sister was joking earlier about “scanxiety,” and she’s 100% right. It’s a thing. The bloodwork isn’t terribly scary (until it is), but the scan portion of cancer care is what makes us all want to vomit from fear because you can actually see what it’s doing, which is even more alarming now that we all know the intent of her chemo is to slow it down, not make it go away. Anyway, we shall see. I’ve got until next week to think about it.

In the meantime, I’ve been a good girl and set up my own doctors’ appointments. I’ve avoided a LOT of medical care to the point where it’s a little embarrassing, so gotta take care of that now. I’ve also shocked myself by calling various contractors to see what type of money we’ll need to shell out to fix up a few rooms. Given the amount and nature of the work, I imagine it will be considerable, though definitely worth it.

Morning all. Slept in until 8am, got up in time for the thunder, lightning and tornado warnings (the cities siren alert went off about 40 minutes ago. So far no word of anything touching down and I still have power, so it’s so far so good. We are getting a bunch of rain and temperatures are going from 62F to around 35F today,so glad I did most of my shopping yesterday. Forecast says the rain will clear our area around 11am, so another couple of hours. On the good side, I think the trash guys will probably start late, so I might be able to redeem my sloth from yesterday and get it out once the rain stops.

Don’t have any chicken stories, was pretty much a town/suburb raised kid, so limited contact with our fowl friends. But enjoying the ones I’m reading.

talkie, hoping the scan is good news. And yeah, house renovation ain’t cheap, but it’s often worth it, especially in older houses. IMHO.

Taters, enjoy the 4-day weekend.

FCM,had to look up the hammer dulcimer (I knew it was a musical instrument but that’s all). Looks neat and hope restoration isn’t to much of a bother.

JtC, I’m planning on another 20 years too, but chickens are not part of those plans. But hope it maybe works out for you.

nellie, a nice story now and then about customers is good to hear. Thanks.

OK, need to do a few little things then onward into the day. All y’all take care.

I must be California Dreaming because all the leaves are brown
all the leaves are brown…
and the sky is grey
and the sky is grey…
I’m done with work
I’m done with work…
And the heaving was OK
And the heaving was OK…
Package cars are leaving
Package cars are leaving…
On such a winter’s day…

So you’re getting hammered?

I bought a ticket. Maybe I’ve used up my bad luck

And then some…(And Ol’ Mike was still smarter than some present day Congresscritters)

Why did I read this as “tomato warnings?”

Stay safe!

It could happen

Afternoon, mumpers! It’s currently 7c/44f with a predicted high of 11c/53f and partly cloudy. Weather app says “This weather is like a fucking 2001 Ford Taurus. It’s really not that interesting.” It’s actually been a bit mixed today, we’ve had gloomy skies, heavy rain and sun. Can’t say much about temperatures because I only went outside for a couple of minutes to put a bag of rubbish in the bin.

It’s been a grotty day all round, work issues are piling up and I am finding it very hard to get motivated to fix any of them. I have two minions with relatives who are needing care at home after falls, one person has an elderly relative in hospital quite a long way from where they live, and I’ve just heard that a member of our team has put in a request to work from home for some time later this year so she can have her eggs harvested. She must have been reading all the conversations about chickens!

Anyway, I have logged out of irk for the day and it will all have to wait until tomorrow. I asked the boss for a catch-up chat tomorrow so we can plan for next week, my colleague who manages the other half of the team has been off for a couple of days and will be off tomorrow too, I fully expect her to be off next week as well since it sounds like she’s got something serious going on.

On the plus side, I have a to-do list (it actually says “Shit I need to get done but probably won’t” in big red letters at the top) and I have ticked off everything on it! Doesn’t mean I’ve done everything by any stretch, just means I need to write another list.

Wordy is there any reason we should be warned about tomatoes? Are they dangerous? Also, add me to the list of wellwishers for the scan.

Taters enjoy the long weekend, you have earned it!

I should do laundry today too, I thought about it a couple of days ago and then forgot again, but now I do need to get a load done. Also need to put some dye on my hair which I plan to do first thing in the morning, and after irk tomorrow I must push the roll-suck around the floors since we are having polite company visiting on Saturday.

First things first though, I have a cup of tea to finish!

Just got the toddler tornado down to a nap. The $64,000 Question is “How long will he sleep?” I plan to assume the recline position and read till he does.

Just remembered something that happened the other day - I saw a woman walking along the road, and I thought “What a pretty shade of blue her hair is!” Nope, it was a hat. I think I’m due for an eye exam…

My father bought a duckling for me for my first Easter. I was 2 months old. Peppe decided that she needed to accompany me in my pram. She attacked anyone who tried to look in.

Her egg was one of my first solid food.

Oh boo! Be happy I don’t have homing geese

Good luck with that, be sure to not try around lunch time.

Oh, I can’t imagine they cost much more than the “free” tomatoes I hand out every year.

So far, my pomegranate tree has cost around 400 bucks. It’s going to take a whole bunch of pomegranates to make up for that and they won’t start happening for at least another year.

Oh, that would be so great for you and for Tobias. Kids do better when they are socialized within their age groups early.

You’ve never met a quail, have you?

I don’t raise mean pets. My pets get spoiled and learn early that people mean pettings and treats.

There will be no killin’ and pluckin’ of chickens here at Casa Doe either. Chances are fair that I will stop eating chicken altogether, but I’ll deal with that if it happens.

Stress kills. It is never on the death certificate, but the physical problems it causes can push one to death. Please take care of yourself and take a day to just do you things. You deserve it.

I will outlive chickens if I get them now. Part of my plans going forward is to not get any pets that will outlive me. We have plans in place for the cats but I’m fairly sure we will not need them because GG is the last cat we will be bringing into our home.

Howdy Y’all! Major sloth has been the theme of the day. Lovely! Nappage has been achieved and we still await the rain. 'Tis quite windy out, however.

I have wrung chikin necks, but not in a very long time. I liked hangin’ at my aunt’s and uncle’s farm with the only cousin I had that was (Larry has since gone to the great beyond) my age. I also learned a valuable lesson Don’t name the animals, it makes it harder to eat the poke chops.

I’m off for a long walk. After that, I’ll take a shorter walk to the grocery store. I saw yesterday they have 12-packs of diet ginger ale 4 for the price of two, so I’ll need the babushka cart.

We never butchered our chickens. I’m a wimp and must pretend meat is born in styrofoam trays.

MetalMouse, stay safe in the storms, bud.

wordy, it may be for a teachers inservice. In WY, state law required 10 days per year. My district knocked out 5 of 'em by having us come in a week before the first day of school, but that still left 5 that had to happen during the school year. Blech. Waste of time. I hope your mom’s scan is better than expected and that your “scanxiety” isn’t too bad.

Taters, do you suppose you’re not sleeping well because of all that stress at work?

My daughter just texted me asking for prayers for her husband’s 3-year-old cousin is hospitalized with bacterial meningitis. He’s a sweet, smart little guy. It’s hard not to worry.

It’s bright out there, and the sky is a weird color: blue. Well, in part, we do have some clouds, but there’s actual sky visible.

Guessers are saying we’ll get more rain starting tonight, and the next day without a better than even chance of rain is Tuesday. Getting to be about time to put away the emergency gear, it looks like.

Got a job interview tomorrow, so a trip to the mall to see if I can find better interview clothes than I already have awaits me.

When I was a little’n, my aunt, who lived just down the street from us, kept chickens. The extended family would have a fried chicken dinner at her house every sunday. The kids weren’t allowed to chop heads off, but we sure learned how to pluck their feathers.
I still eat chickens.

Garlic N.O.T.s and eggs for breakfast.

Not much going on the rest of the day. I might walk down to the library later. Or not.

Later.

The lobster dinner was very good, especially the ravioli with a sauce made from lobster bisque. Very rich dinner, though, and then we made the mistake of having coffee afterward, so both of us had trouble getting to sleep. Ah the tribulations of the idle rich.

Went to the dentist today. Clean bill of health for me, but the wife has a cavity. Exam and cleaning for the two of us and x-rays for the Mrs: $840 (!).

Went to therapy this morning. I’ve lived alone for so long that I’d forgotten how helpful it can be to talk to someone. Not even necessarily solving stuff; just simply saying things out loud, and having a regular outlet. I mean, I have good/close friends, but it’s not the same. Sometimes it’s nice to just be able to ramble for 50 minutes.

On the way home I was at a stop light in a turn lane, and a woman was in the median asking for money. Folks like that are a common sight around here, and for the past few years whenever I’ve had cash on me – and have been stopped for long enough – I’ve usually given them something. Often a folded $20 bill, actually, just because I can. As I did today. I always love the moment when the person’s face goes from “grateful” (to be getting anything) to “astonished” (when they see the denomination). I hadn’t been able to do that in a while. I’ve never told/I never tell anyone – except y’all, just now – but it helps me feel like a good human.

Most of the apartment management companies I dealt with were alright (except the last one, but that was largely because the companies kept changing), it’s the townhouse/single family home property managers who have been PITAs – everything from mild incompetence to downright nastiness. The PM I have right now (where I’ve lived for 8+ years) can be hard to reach/slow to act, but is otherwise pretty good. So far, anyway: true colors tend to emerge after you provide notice that you’re moving out. I plan to stay here for as long as Bailey is with me, so hopefully I have another year or two.

Renters often get a bad rap, for lots of legitimate reasons, but there are just as many bad PMs out there.

I’ve never tried the BK ones: whenever I go there I’m all about getting an original chicken sandwich and some onion rings. I haven’t been to a BK since my surgery. I miss it! There isn’t one near my house, but there’s one near the office…I bet I could tolerate a chikin sammich just fine at this point, and prolly at least a few onion rings…hmm…

Their crossword is usually too tough for me (I feel way too stupid way too often), but I enjoy playing the NY Times Spelling Bee. Not that I’m so great at that, but at least most of the time I don’t wind up feeling like my M.A. in English came from a Cracker Jack box.

Showoff!! :stuck_out_tongue:

:crossed_fingers:

More :crossed_fingers: !

Afternoon all. The tunder-boomers have relocated eastward, we still have rain on and off for a little while but in general not too bad outside. Did get garbage picked up and the can is back in the garage, and I took a drive up to Tennessee to buy $20 of unlikely hope for Friday’s drawing.

Also shopping for a newer, smaller-screen laptop that’s lightweight that I can take on my travels without busting the weight limitations or my arm/back. Wal-Mart might have the best deal, will do a little more shopping tomorrow and get around to it. Also got #1 of 3 Amazon shipments due by Saturday (microfiber wipes and travel adapter for electricity).

Oopsie, I only do the Wednesday one that appears in the paper; the Sunday NY Times is a puzzle to far. And good on therapy; you know of course you can ramble anytime with this crew…

Cookie, Ouch! Do you have a dental plan? I pay for one that lets me get two cleanings and inspections (and annual x-rays) that don’t come out of my pocket. Never knew it was so expensive.

Well, at least you’re didn’t have to pluck pheasants…
Just in case:
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/558094578801437692/
boo fae, sounds like old folks are having their problems over in Britannia too; and I’m happy for the lady donating her eggs to help someone else out.

And now…
