A Tad Late, but Still the MMP....

We’ve actually done a bit of layering in class, but yeah, it’s nowhere near what you’re describing. I really should look for another class - the trouble is that my school is in a rather secluded area, so there’s not much available unless one is willing to go all the way downtown. Ah well.

I actually have to skip belly-dance today, because I have a meeting with a potential thesis advisor (and plus I haven’t finished all my readings for my 3pm class). Please keep your fingers crossed for me - hopefully she’ll say yes and I’ll have one less thing to worry about!

I want a tangerine!

I just warmed up and ate leftover chicken 'n dumplin’s. MMMMMMMMM… my tummy is all full and warm right now. It should be nap time.

I’m tired. Emotionally tired. Did I mention I’ve been working with the girl who decided she wasn’t interested? Yeah. But press on I shall. Today I will be aided by the Kahlua Mudslide I packaged into my lunch instead of the usual yogurt drink.

Drae, good luck!

LiLi yay for Mr. Lissar with the good work review, bonus and raise. He should definitely take you out to dinner. Just the two of you. No group dating.

spats…just…groan. :stuck_out_tongue:

The funeral mass is set for February 2 at 10:00 am. I’m going to take some old pics taken of Dad when he was in his early 20s and see if I can get somebody in my creative department to blow them up and print them on good paper for me. I thought it would be nice to have that at the church.

I’m sitting here waiting for round 2 of the shower door installation. Feeling very restless today. At least tomorrow I can get out of the house and go pay my traffic ticket. Envy me my exciting existence. :stuck_out_tongue:

li-li, OW!

ali, vrooom!!

fcm, I think your new lil doggie is Precious (which is a much better name than Scruffy…do you want to give her a complex?).

Off to nuke something for lunch.

Tupug

It’s snowing! Not much, but actual flakes are falling from the sky. I’m like a little kid about snow, probably because I haven’t seen much of it since I *was[/] a little kid. But whatever, it makes me happy!

Woo hoo! My final paycheck was deposited in my account this morning. Actually, it’s a lot smaller than I thought it would be, so they must have taxed the daylights out of it. Or they shorted me big time. I guess I have to wait for the check stub to arrive before I need to decide if I need to yell at payroll or not. Ooh, AC just emailed me that I left a box of pennies at my desk. So there’s some extra $$$ right there. Actually, that’s fascinating. The woman who doesn’t hesitate to steal food or anything else that isn’t nailed down, actually had concerns about pocketing $1.50 in pennies? Whenever I cleaned out somebody’s desk, I figured anything less than $5 was my tip.

Good morning, almost afternoon, everyone.

It has been another day of craziness. Two more short fuse, COB data calls today. I STILL haven’t been able to do the stuff I have been PLANNING to do since Tuesday. Arrrrrgh. I told one branch head in my div they were all driving me crazy. He responded that it was a short putt for me anyway. Ha-ha…yeah.

Congrats and woo-hoo to Mr. Lissar!

Bobbio, I’m sorry I got you all grumpified. You can join me.
As to the WoW addiction. You all must know and understand this is our wintertime activity. Come spring and summer, we will be too busy playing on the water with the boat and stuff to mess with WoW. So, I can walk away from it.

Need to go to a meeting now. Envy me my data mining/database/meeting hell.

It apparently snowed here. When I took the critters out for their afternoon poo, I noticed a couple of teeny-tiny patches of white. Supposedly, it’s going to rain/snow all night long - tomorrow could be a real joy, I tell ya!

**FCD ** is taking tomorrow off to tend to a lot of errands, most dog-related. He’s overdue for an oil change in the Jetta, so that’s scheduled at 8:30. Vet at 1:30. Groomer at 3. I probably won’t see him till suppertime. I considered taking the day off, too, but my report is in the review stage and I fully expect someone to make me change parts of it, so I need to be in the office. Plus we have a branch meeting at 12 or 1 - I can’t recall which. Anyway, if I’ve got to be there till 1, I may as well stay till 2. So no day off for me.

Polish sausage and sauerkraut for supper - yummy and burpalicious!! Salad, too. Overall, an easy meal to prepare, which is good. I need easy. Today was a busy day in cubicleland and I need to chill.

It’s been more than 2 weeks without caffeine. I’m sleeping better, but I still feel draggy about this time of day. Too bad I’m not a napper.

Off to plop the sausage in a pot of water to thaw…

Yay for Mr. Lissar! Recognition is always nice, especially in the form of $$!

Papa Tigs is feeling a little less peeved about not being able to log in to sign up for insurance – he was informed that he won’t be in the system until Tuesday. It would have been nice if they told him that yesterday when they gave him his login, but from what I’ve seen thus far about the civilian personnel folks at his installation, helpful is just not in their vocabulary.

I was a good girl and just cleaned up the kitchen and bedroom. Well, part of the bedroom, anyway; it still needs another session. But I’m getting there. Yay me! (Where’s the patting oneself on the back smiley when we need it?)

Well, I just finished downloading a file for a super-rush job, so I guess I’d better go see if the patch I downloaded in order to be able to play it actually works.

AHHHHHHH today has been such a frazzling day. The prof I met basically tore down my thesis topic and suggested a new one, which is not totally unrelated to my original but still invalidates half my bibliography and may make it necessary for me to change my primary texts. Not to mention it requires I read Korean texts as well. I HATE READING KOREAN TEXTS. To top it off I don’t even know if she’s going to agree to be my thesis advisor. After putting me through this trauma she bloody well help see me through it.

Now, please excuse me while I go melt into a little puddle on the floor.

Sounds like no fun, Hank. Chances are she wouldn’t have spent that much time with you if she wasn’t planning to be your thesis advisor. It’s not unusual to have your original topic thrown out or modified radically. Sometimes it’s because they want to mold you in their likeness. Other times their re-do of your topic is kind of self-serving because it’s an area that they want to more about and research more in-depth later.

Good idea, though, on making sure you’re getting some practical background. I was in a doctoral program for about a million years and saw quite a few people come into the program for a PhD and then decide that it wasn’t for them. It makes a lot of sense to start working on a back-up plan while you’re still early in your career.

Yay on Mr. Lissar’s good work news! Bonuses and raises are always nice. And thank you ever so much for doing all that exercise on my behalf. It really does sound tiring!

The picture idea sounds good, Puggy. One of my friends lost her mother recently (I think I mentioned it); my friend had a video and albums at the viewing. I thought it was really neat to get an idea of her life. The pictures seemed to bring back a lot of good memories for the people who knew her as well.

Hang in there, Spats. You can make it through the stress.

Drae, we can give you references if you like. Maybe they’ll accept them in lieu of an interview.

Hooray for the car news, Al!

Vaporizer sounds interesting, Mindy. Hope you stay healthy.

Don’t envy me my good night’s sleep, rigs. I woke up at 4 and couldn’t sleep for quite a while, then fell asleep and had a tortured dream about not being able to find the right shoes for work. I kept finding brown shoes when I needed black ones. It really stressed me out.

Long day, although I actually got a few things done that fit into my plan. Minor miracle.

Just relaxing now and thinking about crawling into bed early again. Maybe I can sleep the whole night through this time.

It’s almost Friday!!! (How’d that happen?)

GT

So far a mildly sucky week. My back hurts, the hockey team lost, and I have to cut most of the hours for the rest of the week. Big truck tomorrow, off to bed.

At my dad’s memorial service, we had a whole bunch of pictures and mementos from various periods in his life. Since there were people there who’d known him at one period or another but didn’t know much about other periods, a lot of people found it really interesting to see what he’d done in his life and learn about him. Plus it gave them a great opportunity for reminiscing in a positive way. I’d recommend it if you have the time to dig out a few photos, Puggy**; it really gave us all a lot of nice warm fuzzies at an otherwise stressful time.

I was able to open that super-rush job. I’m still not sure who at the office figured out the workaround to be able to play the file in my audio file transcribing software, which normally can’t handle this type of file, but kudos to whoever did – I had to download and decompress a patch, then open the file in Windows Media Player, and then open my transcribing software, which somehow magically knew to import the file without me even telling it to. Definitely a weird setup, but hey, whatever works, right?

Palebunny is now working hard on that Stupid Dog Trick of teaching Isaac the yellow lab to balance his dog treats on his nose before eating them. She actually got him to let her put a small treat on his nose and move her hand away this afternoon, so definite progress is being made. Next step is to only eat it on command, but it takes time. I’ll take photographic evidence when she finally succeeds, this will be a definite keeper!

Well, the Sick finally made its evil way to Columbus. I was fine this morning - went to my doctor’s appointment and got my next week’s meds. Came home and puttered around for a bit, then laid down for a nap. When I woke up at 3, I started sneezing. Mr. SCL counted - I sneezed 47 times in about half an hour. I have been sneezing ever since, although not quite as often. I am miserable; my eyes and nose are running and my head is pounding. I can’t even sleep in tomorrow as I have a cat-sitting job and those monsters are used to being fed by 7am. Just grrrrrrrrr. HaaaaaaaaChoooooooooooooo!

GAAAAAH! I FREAKin miss being able to post during the day! grrrrrrrr :frowning:

<sigh>

ok -
IrishStringMan - yay for the new wheels - what make is it? color? ammenities?

Tigs - you suddenly reminded me of a “bit” my folks would do (they both had wicked arthritis but tried to stayed good humored about it):

Mom: I hurt.
Dad: Where?
Mom: In the joints.
Dad: I told you, stay outta dose joints, lady!

eh, I guess you had to be there - it made them laugh, which was the whole point.

I am agonizing over what to do about Smokey during my extended hospital stay for knee replacement and rehab this spring. I’ve already asked my tenant if he’d take in my mail and check on the cat every day, he said yes. But now an out of town* friend I trust implicitly has told me that’s a waaay bad idea. I could ask my neighbor, who took care of things when I went to Vegas in '04, but I don’t know what her schedule is like. My one friend, who helps me out from time to time lives several towns over so it would not be easy for her, and she has enough on her plate. A coworker lives a few blocks away and did it when I had my hip surgeries in '01 - I suppose I could ask her. OY.
Yes, it’s not until the end of April, but I have to think about it now so I do not get too overwhelmed. My brother and older nephew (with his wife and son) will spend a few days each with me - I might be able to get my bro to come down twice - once when I first go in and then when I come out. I have to keep telling myself how much better everything will be once this is done and I’m past the initial recovery period.
I can remember about a month after I’d gone back to work after the hips I was in a store shopping, waiting for beig waited on, standing at the register, etc. When I got back to my car, I looked at my watch - I’d been on my feet about 40 minutes and I barely noticed it - I long for that again. (I was also about 70 lbs lighter but that’s another story)

We got a new song tonight - a happy little arrangement of “Dream a Little Dream of Me” - Songs like that make being a Bass fun!
*otherwise I’d ask her to do it

did you know JigZone lets you upload your own photos for puzzles?
I don’t know if this link will lead you to my pics, but if it does, let me know what you think of my original art… (heh heh heh)

I’m sorry I’m not closer, rosie – or at least I assume I’m not nearby, wherever you may be; we could have a New Knees club! I hope you can find a reliable catsitter. Have you considered hiring a professional animal sitter to come in every few days? That way even if the neighbor or whoever let you down, there would be backup. Boarding gets insanely expensive, I realize, for more than a couple of days. That’s one reason we’re so pleased to have palebunny around – we’re taking it out in trade, so to speak, only the trade is petsitting!

Finished the super-rush job, finished another job, and the beddy-bye is calling me. So I’ll say goodnight to you all, and here’s hoping we all have sound sleep and pleasant dreams!

you’re a few states away - but at least we’re on the same side of the country

Pugs, in Catalonia they make these things called “aucas”, my cousin made one for Grandpa when he turned 90.

It’s a series of pictures of someone telling their life in “pareados” below. A pareado is a poem with only two verses, in “rima consonante” (which is a term that doesn’t make sense in English but sort of means “a rigid rhyme, no soundalikes”), all the verses in the auca are the same length. I imagine there’s some sort of equivalent for pareados in English but I don’t know anything about English poetry other than it’s measured in feet. An English sonnet and a Spanish soneto are completely different animals, must drive Chéspir’s translators nuts.

So Grampa’s auca was 12 pictures, starting with one where he is months old, one holding his baby sister, one from when he and great-grandpa were in the same course in school…

In the rest of Spain that same format is called historias de ciego, blind man’s tales, because blind men would make a living traveling from town to town, carrying banners with those stories painted on and telling them. Sometimes they were the life of a well-known person, sometimes a fairy tale, a humorous story, or a scary one. They were the forefathers of the “yellow press”: any horrible murder would make its way through the country on the arms of the blind men’s guideboys…
