I’m not muslim but I was grooving on the idea of having friends over in the evening to have dinner, like the Ramadan celebrants around these parts so often do.
So I’m doing it. A potluck at my house this weekend, Saturday 11/23. If you’re close enough to drive (or fly, what the hell), you’re invited. At least a handful of Michigan Dopers will be in attendance. And one Pennsylvania Doper. And two people who aren’t Dopers but know another Doper we have in common (who won’t be there).
You can email me if you need details, directions, etc. It’s not gonna be a wild party (Cranky Fests never are) but I suspect we’ll have fun nonetheless.
And yes, see the sticky above about the fact that the SDMB is NOT responsible for gatherings, face-to-face meetings, etc.
Kyla (or was it Juniper?) dubbed it “A Very Cranky Ramadan” and I dig that name. Zappo has also suggested it be like Festivus, only he calls it Crankymas. So after the feats of strength, I’ll tell you how you’ve disappointed me this year. Whichever it is, I am looking forward to seeing SDMB friends.

Well, it’s iftar if it’s at sunset (around 5.30 pm currently here) and everyone is breaking their fast, usually with lentil soup and dates, a strange tamarind or dried apricot drink, and then a goat or lamb roast with all this rice stuff. Plus kibbeh and hummous and moutabel and the whole Arabic buffet shebang.
Later on I believe it’s called suhour. Though recently someone told me that supposed to be in the morning (it may be my pronunciation was wrong). Anyway I’ve been invited to a couple of suhours, and they’re all 8.30pm/9.30pm even 10pm ish.
I really wanted to make it and meet some board people, but alas, it’s not going to happen.
