Morning, everyone. 'Tis sunny and the day plans to be gorgeous; I hope I will get a solid waddle in this afternoon during lunch.
Other than working, today’s assignment is to find a GP and also make various and sundry other preventive-type appointments, which I’ve been avoiding for about two years. Well, last year doesn’t count, but still. Given the many lifestyle-related illnesses cropping up among my circle of friends, I’d be happy to hear the usual: “Overly, your blood looks great, diet looks ok-ish and your activity levels are pretty decent. However, have you thought of losing a few pounds?” That used to irritate the bejeezus out of me (“Why no, doctor, that never, ever would’ve occurred to me!”), but a clean(ish) bill of health would be reassuring.
Anyway, guess I’d better get food in before the first meeting of the day begins. One crappy thing about working from home has been that my meetings begin earlier and earlier, some around 7 a.m. Luckily today is not such a day.
Afternoon, mumpers! It’s cold and grey out today, I know 'cos I’ve been out there! Weather app says “Stratus clouds are definitely the shitbags of the meteorology. Trust me. I know my fucking shit” and promises me 5C/41F up to 6C/44F and cloudy. Seems fair to me.
The reason I have been out and about? I has a foster kitty! Due to a complicated set of circumstances, my friend (who runs Little Paws Cat Haven) had to shuffle some cats around to accommodate three that needed to come in to her. She was desperate for someone to have Whisper, he’s a 10 year old tabby and a total sweetie. Anyway, we decided he could come here as he’s old enough to behave himself and should settle in with the two resident old nanners (mine are 16+). Yesterday I went to fetch him, and today I had to go to the pet shop for an extra litter tray and some specific food that I know he will eat.
gotti yikes! Glad to hear you got hospitalised in time, and treated quickly. Here’s to a speedy recovery!
And it’s time to scoot off again, I have a presentation to do in 10 minutes’ time. Better get myself together!
boo fae, good on you for fostering Whisper; hope all works out in the feline dynamics…
Jim, Preach It!!
VanGo, good news on the parents; Wal-Marts around here just started taking vaccination appointments and they’re already booked up–I’m getting a bit frustrated.
FCM, probably a good move on the cruise; I’m hoping the vaccine coverage is enough so I can get a Western USA vacation in this year, but it looks like 2022 will be my blowout year for travel.
hippie, glad all is well, both physically and electronically.
Up at 7:30am and it’s another nice day with temperatures in the 60’sF with no rain, so may have to try and get out some, albeit I’m still a little sore from chasing around the kids soccer yesterday. Need to do some more work on that, I have a guy who promised to be a coach but still hasn’t registered, and that’s messing up everyone else. We’ll see.
Anyway, need to do some things and then forage for sustenance. All y’all have a good Thorsday.
Groceries have been procured and stowed. I scored some country style poke ribs (supposedly boneless, but I found 2 bone hunks.) After trimming away a lot of excess fat (yes, I left some for flavor) I dumped it all in the slow cooker with chopped onions and BBQ sauce. Eventually, it will become pulled poke!
BooFae - kitteh pics, woman!!! Sheesh!!!
FCD just got back from the doc - apart from gaining a little weight, his numbers are decent. He’s really down, tho, knowing he’s pretty much on a death watch for his parents. His dad turns 91 later this month and his mom will be 90 in June. His logical mind knows they’re close to the end of their lives, but logic doesn’t make it any easier. And there’s nothing I can do but be here for him and help him deal as well as I can.
Assuming his mom lives till April, she’s scheduled for a second shoulder replacement (did I mention this already) and I’ll be going with him to help take care of her when she’s released from the hospital. Leading up till then, I intend to cook up a bunch of heat-and-eat meals for them, with a plan to stock their freezer. I’ve found some recipes on line that look promising, but if any of you have dishes that fit the bill, please share! Cheap and easy, please!
OK, time to attack the laundry and tread the mill.
Up early this morning due to hydraulic pressure. Broke fast, cleaned the litter boxes and fed the cats, both indoors and out. Amusement of the morning was watching one of the outdoor cats get Tilt-A-Whirled by one of the pots on the stage*. Those of you that like spicy things need to get a bottle of Secret Aardvark Serrabanero green sauce. Wonderful stuff! We get a few days of sun through the weekend and then a week of rain is predicted. Just enough of a window to get the first plants of the season potted.
Stay masked, everyone! Abbot’s a moron and so are the rest of the 100% openers.
My yard backs into a steep hill. The previous owner cut away at the slope and built a concrete and brick “stage” about 3’ high and 4’ deep running along the back of the lot. At the back of the stage is a 4’ brick retaining wall topped by a planting strip and a 6’ wooden fence which separates my yard from the very steep back of the lot above me. On this stage are a number of large pots wherein I display my gardening prowess. They are currently empty and awaiting fresh potting soil. One of the greys jumped into a pot to see what it was all about. Since it was a 24" half barrel made of resin, when the cat leapt onto the edge to get out, the barrel twisted and rocked sending the cats flying across the stage. It took off for parts unknown while the pot sat there rocking gently until it settled back into place. Was amusing to watch while sipping cocoa.
Woo-hoo! You won the lottery on this one! You worked hard on the recovery and showed us all how it should be done. Nothing left to do now but enjoy retirement and you are the man for the job.
Sounds like you found an even better one. I’d love an East Coast one myself and I’d round it off with a San Francisco-Alaska one for good measure, with a long train thrown in. I think nellie would be a fun cabin mate for that one. We could walk laps on the deck and she could tell teacher stories.
Great news! As soon as my little sister and I get 3 weeks past our 2nd jab I’m jumping in my trusty Honda and heading to Iowa to hang out at her house and break in her new couch, drinking coffee and reading in between chatting with her and just being together. She’ll read interspersed with knitting. I think not seeing her for for than a year when we usually visit at least 3 times a year (it’s an easy jaunt 5 hours east in I80) has been the hardest thing about all of this to me.
Sounds like a good match. I’ve enjoyed some great foster kitties over the years-it was always a ‘who rescued who?’ situation with me.
First load of laundry is done, second is in the dryer, mill has been tread, and I’m lunching. In case anyone is interested, the Progresso Light Italian style wedding soup is pretty good. In fact, it’s one of my favorites. And I’ve decided that supper will be steamed shrimp with a side of salad. And maybe rice, maybe not.
The poke is cooking along but it needs a few more hours till it’s pullable. In the interim, I’ve been watching yet another documentary on the foibles of royal-type folk. In general, they don’t seem to be very nice people - always killing off rivals or marrying for power or intermarrying themselves into oblivion or wasting money on frivolous crap.
It’s warming above 50, so I may go out and start prepping my greenhouse. I’ve ordered some seeds and starter planters, and I plan to move some flowers to make a veggie bed. Next week promises to have better weather and I’m hoping to get the raised bed built then. We shall see.
Fun times at the big hospital in the big city. Someone had the idea they could smoke in a restroom, which resulted in “Code red. Third floor. Patient restroom. Room xxx” booming out through the building. No idea what happened but they’re probably SFPD’s problem now.
Had another visit from Trudy, the ultraviolet sterilizer robot. Dangerous to look at, but she’s at least polite.
I woke up to the ol’ joint pain in my hands. I’m going to count my blessings in having had several months of minimal such instead of cussing nonstop, which was my plan before I got out of bed. I took naproxen and am now able to type. My other joint pain is in my feet and ankles, but I’m planning to soldier through a walk.
Yesterday I was looking for something in my desk and ended up starting a massive reorganization. I need to finish that today.
Aw, that sounds like fun. I bet you have some fascinating nursing stories. Except I don’t know if I’m a commercial cruise kind of a gal. A friend of mine who went expecting it to be like the ads said it was crowded and “like Disneyland without the rides.” I’d love to go on a cargo ship, though.
hippie, cause for celebration. Isn’t normal a beautiful place?
gotti, how are you feeling today? Were you able to talk to the hospitalist? Bet that smoker was pretty embarrassed. At least, I hope so.
sunny, so sorry about the migraine. I’m glad to hear your sister’s heart is behaving itself, though.
Hoping the naproxen helps your feet and ankles soldier through the walk. I think naproxen is a very useful drug to have around. My NFL-career-ending torn up knee requires it on some days and I am happy to have been able to use it to avoid surgery.
Sold. If I have a bed, meals and drink put in front of me and a deck to walk on, I’d be happy. Don’t even need a pool. Oh, and someone to trade novels with when I finished reading it.
Timing is everything on a cruise, as is the cruise line. Carnival caters to a younger crowd, Holland-America tends to be older. Longer cruises have older crowds than shorter ones. And you need to avoid times when school is out of session to avoid too many kids.
We avoid Carnival and we avoid the Caribbean beach cruises for the most part. I’d never take a Disney cruise ($$$$) We’ve had good luck on Royal Caribbean, and the cruise I took on Princess with my mom was great, but it was almost 4 weeks, so very few kids aboard. So don’t write off traditional cruise ships - they can be wonderful.
Plus when I hit the big jackpot, I’m taking all of you on a cruise. I suppose I should buy a couple of tickets towards that end…
I’ve cleared out the dead stuff from my greenhouse. Next step is to transplant the stuff where I plan to put in the raised bed. I’m already seeing lots of spring bulbs emerging - at least 4 tulips have popped up by FCD’s shop! So it’s time to get out there with a rake and start feeding the new growth. I foresee lots of yard time in the next couple of weeks.
Fatigue hit me like a ton of bricks. I’m propped up to type this, but this as much as I can do. Maybe later I can finish reorganizing the desk, since I can sit down for the whole thing. My mind wants to walk. Or go on a cruise.
I took another sick day. My sinuses are driving me crazy and no amount of antihistamines help. Now I’m all wheezy in my lungs. Anyway I did manage to clean out and get that freezer cleaned and a couple hundred pounds of who know what into the trash. I just hope the deer don’t get into it. They would have a field day and I’d have a mess to clean up. It in a can with a cover. Wish I had a block to put on it.
Back to irk tomorrow. I just hate to go there anymore but as long as I’m here may as well take their money every two weeks. My stepdaughter is trying to get me to buy in NC and move close to them or even in with them. I gotta have my own space. She sent me pictures of a half million dollar home with an extra lot to build a house for me. She is a resale estate agent. I don’t know that I can take the cold. It’s nice of her to want me around. I know her end game and it’s the half million dollar house I own most of in the Keys. Money is the root of all evil.
Hang on that house in the Keys if you love it. Especially if “the cold” in NC is too much. I could never survive the heat index in Florida at least6 months out of the year. I had to smile since two weeks ago it was 35 degrees below zero windchill for days at a time where I live.
Prettiest place I ever was was a week on Sanibel, so I think I understand the appeal of your place.
