Most porn is crap - even with the sex they are boring as hell. The thing is, I always expect that someone will come along (no pun intended) and make a really good one. Any time I go into the “naughty” section of a movie store, I see hundreds of movies lining the walls. Most of the ones I have seen are a waste of time - I mean, if the actor isn’t excited, why should the viewer be?
What I am looking for here is some suggestions for adult movies that you thought were really good for whatever reason. They don’t have to be XXX, just adult oriented in nature. And I know that “good” is a reletive term, that each person’s opinion will vary with regards to a certain film. Thing is, I’ll take the opions of this board over the general public’s any day.
BTW - all I am looking for is titles and general descriptions. No need to include anything that is overly graphic…
Dixie Ray: Hollywood Star.
Set during The War (WWII) it had a plot, caricture develepment, good lighting, proper props (old style phones) all in all a good movie. There was even a real movie star in it (NO NUDE SCENES) but I forget who he was.

Insatitable starring Marylin Chambers and Johnny Wad. What’s it about? Fucking mostly, but it’s pretty artsy-fartsy.
This one has a special place in my heart. Back when I was in college, the football team decided to rent our the main auditorium (which sat about a thousand) and show this film as a fund raiser. And they made a friggin’ killing.
It all depends on what the OP is looking for. If you want multi-faceted portrayals of human sexuality, you’ll have to forego Hollywood fare and look elsewhere. On the other hand, if you’re looking for softcore/hardcore turn-on flicks then they’re all pretty much the same. Here are some examples of the former:
Cafe Flesh is a '70’s porn flick with with a post-apocalyptic theme. After a world war most of the population is unable to conceive or even get it up. The lucky few that are able to perform sexually have been reduced to performing sex acts for a frustrated audience. Neither the performers nor the audience are able to complete the act. For a more mainstream treatment of similar material try A Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood.
Belle de Jour by Louis Bunuel is about a middle class housewife (tasty Catherine DeNeuve) who moonlights as a high-class prostitute during the day while her husband is at work. She uses her sexuality to rebel against constrictive societal norms.
If you’re feeling brave, try David Cronenberg’s Crash. It’s a very cold, distanced examination of alienated sexuality. The movie is very explicit and doesn’t have a conventional plot but it makes larger statements about the human condition by thoroughly examining its character’s fetishes. Fair warning: their turn-ons include bruises, scars and car crashes. This movie is defininately NOT for everyone.
The best one, in terms of content, has to be Chameleons. I don’t know the director, the distributer, or anything else outside of the title. It’s fairly recent, late 1990’s, I think.
That was the first and only porno that I’ve actually not had to fast-forward through the dialogue. This one actually had me interested.
O.K., O.K., it’s not ‘Wages of Fear’, but in terms of porno it was pretty damn interesting.

I’ll second the recommendation for Cafe Flesh. It’s one of the few explicit sex movies that has a story beyond the sex.
You might check out the work of filmmaker Candida Royalle. She’s a former x-rated actress who now produces and directs. Her films place a much higher emphasis on a storyline and a female viewpoint.
Some people enjoy the genre of amateur porn. The performers in these movies are often more enthusiastic than the professionals.
And, CnoteChris, I believe the star of Chameleons was Tori Welles.
If you’re looking for hardcore porn with some modicum of artfulness, look into the films of Andrew Blake, House of Dreams and Secrets in particular. They’re artfully photographed, and though there’s no dialogue, there’s definitely a story.

As to the OP, Irresistable was a movie that would have worked w/o the sex scenes. It would have been short, but it would have worked. It had a definite plot, and MHO is one of the best porn films ever. Ribald Tales of Canterbury gets a nod because it has some sense of humor and again, the sex logically fits in with the plot. Behind the Green Door is also interesting, although the cum shot photagraphy gets waaaaaaaayyyy to cute about itself- slow motion, mirror split screnes, psychodelic colors, etc…It’s interesting because the audience is made up of “real” people, young, old, fat skinny, ugly, atractive, etc… A nice change from buff 18 year olds screaming “oh, fuck me” in an unconvincing manner. They look like they actually enjoyed their orgy.
Well, I would go get the movie Romance. It’s very odd, and has a strange plot, but it’s kind of notable because it’s a mainstream movie, that was shown in mainstream art houses, but features actual penetration and the rare screen appearance of a blow job (on a sad, droop little penis, in my opinion). It also marks Rocco Sifredi’s cross over from porn to mainstream film.
Don’t expect any perfect bodies and well manicured body hair like the pornos though, these are supposed to be real people, the story of a woman who can’t find erotic fulfillment and ends up going to extremes.
HOWEVER, don’t rent it at Blockbuster. As many of us know, Blockbuster edits NC-17 films to fit their needs and the Blockbuster version of Romance has one sex scene COMPLETELY cut out, not even just edited. those pricks.

I’m a founding member (heh heh) of the Tallahassee Porn On Demand Club. Yes, we sit around and watch porn. For the very reason stated in the OP: We wanted to know if there was any decent porn movies out there. We’ve been watching 1-2 movies a month for almost 2 years.
I’ll e-mail you later with a complete list, including our (averaged) ratings for each. There’s no real criteria, besides, was it titillating? Sometimes we give points for the “Eeeeyyyyyeeeewww” factor. To each his or her own.
But, for the purpose of this post being remotely useful to anyone else in search of decent porn, I have two recommendations, which I’ll give with the caveat that I have a soft spot (er, should I say a wet spot?) for 70’s porn. That said:
Behind the Green Door. It’s a classic, very well done for its era and very titillating in parts. You have a fast forward button, right?
Alice in Wonderland XXX. It’s just darn tootin’ funny!
I’d also recommend vintage (1930’s and 40’s) pornographic cartoons, if you can find them. Oh yeeaaahhhh, baby…
Any porn made after 1986 is mostly going to be lousy. First of all, all the smut since then has been shot on video instead of film. This does something to the actual look of the production. Search the web (like E-bay,or excalibur films) for pre 1986 adult films. Might I suggest: “On Golden Blonde”, “Insatiable”, “Insatiable 2”, “On White Satin”. “Debbie does Dallas” is nowhere near as good as one would think, but it’s better than most of the shit I presume is out there today.
If you really want to get down in dirty, try “Little Girl Blue”, which is still available under the re-title “Girls in Blue”. The absolute worst titles for an ADULT film, if you ask me.
Just about anything that Andrew Blake directs is going to be highly erotic, well shot (on film, not video), and will have a minimum of poorly delivered dialogue. Night Trips is actually a pretty good film, with an interesting plot, passable acting, and very torrid sex.
I think The Devil and Miss Jones had a passable plot, though looking back now I couldn’t tell you what it was. I just remember that there was actual dialog and the final scene of the movie where she is all hot and bothered and trying to talk a crazy guy into sex, and all he cares about is counting the tiles in the wall.
