Alan Keyes' daughter comes out

Remember Alan Keyes? You know, our Illinois senate candidate, who claimed homosexuality was ‘‘selfish hedonism’’ and that Vice President Dick Cheney’s lesbian daughter was a sinner?

Well, his daughter came out yesterday as a lesbian.

Good for you, Maya. Maybe your father will see the light (but I doubt it).

For the non-Pitally inclined we’re taking an on-again off-again lighthearted look at the issue in MPSIMS.

We’re down to Stan Lee being a biblical prophet. I warn you.

Dick Cheney, for all his faults, at least has the human decency to stand up next to his daughter, support her, and express his love for her. Alan Keyes apparently cut off college money to his daughter after this admission.

Congratulations, Mr. Keyes, you have made Dick Cheney–the man who said “Go fuck yourself” to a U.S. Senator on the Senate floor–look compassionate by comparison.

As long as she’s not on stage with him - or even in the family portrait - at the Republican Convention. He doesn’t love her enough to risk offending the tiny minded bigots who infest his own party.

Look at it the other way around. At least Alan Keyes is consistent. Someone who constantly talks about how terrible homosexuality is who then kicks a grown son or daughter out of his household when he or she comes out is at least more consistent than one who rages about homosexuality and then continues to welcome his openly gay son or daughter into his house and refuses to talk to the press about them because he considers it a personal matter. Similarly, it’s not consistent to defend long prison sentences for drug addicts and then send your own son or daughter to drug treatment when they become a drug addict or to advocate making abortion illegal and then sending your own pregnant, unmarried daughter off to get an abortion somewhere far away or to rage against draft dodgers and then use your influence to get your son a deferment. Alan Keyes’s principles may be stupid and/or despicable, but at least they’re consistent, which is more than you can say about many people’s principles.

Being consistantly a fuckhead is worse than inconsistancy, IMHO.

I understand that members of the GLBT community have arranged for her to be housed and her tuition to be paid:

Oh, those selfish homosexuals.

I guess you can see who really takes care of family.

Well, except for that “family values” thing, as I believe I’ve pointed out. Apparently, he doesn’t value his family very much.

I think we’ve finally located one possible cause of homosexuality: being the offspring of some rightwing dickhead certainly seems to be at least a contributing factor.

Agreed. Thank heavens the good folks at The Point Foundation are giving her a helping hand, and setting her up with a place to stay, and school financing. She is very brave for doing what she has done.

WW: *Similarly, it’s not consistent to defend long prison sentences for drug addicts and then send your own son or daughter to drug treatment when they become a drug addict *

Which is where Jeb Bush comes in, I guess:

Gov. Jeb Bush calls for jail time for nonviolent drug offenders as his daughter gets sent to rehab.

There are far, far worse sins than hypocrisy.

The fact that Keyes’ treatment of his daughter is consistent with his stated principles is not proof that he acted the way he did because of principle.

He may be simply acting pragmatically: i.e., doing what’s necessary to not damage his career as a paid speaker to audiences that don’t like gay people.

It sure kinda seems like it.

I tell you, if somebody were to prove that ant-gay conservatives consistantly have more gay kids than average, I might start reconsidering my atheism.

Fuck Alan Keyes. He’s the living breathing example of the oft quoted line about foolish consistency.

I only hope his daughter finds someway to heal from his rejection.

Nah-they’re both bad.

“Why would anyone not want to have a gay child?! I would rather have a gay child! You know they won’t be shooting up their classroom – that would get in the way of yearbook. …And I would go down to the Motherlode, heavy with child, and the Three Wise Drag Queens would come bearing gifts of 1000-thread count sheets, hair products by Frederic Fekkai, and a copy of the Immaculate Collection.” - Margaret Cho

They’re both bad, but I’d prefer the inconsistant person who is at least occasionally not an utter prick.

I’ve seen Mary Cheney (I think that’s the gay one) on stage with Dick cheney at least a few times. At their convention in 2004, when they all took the stage to claim victory Wednesday afternoon after election day, and at this year’s inaugural.

Mary was not on stage at the 2004 RNC. Her sister was there but not her. Mary and her partner were in the audience but were kept off the stage.
