I remember when Erik, the lads, and I would do something very similar. We couldn’t be blamed for our high-spiritedness. Of course there was no video cameras involved, but we’d happen upon a fair maiden, have our way and move on to the next. It wasn’t necessarily that we meant harm, even as we put the village to the torch, we were just in need of some excitement. Life back at the fjords was as bleak as the women, you see. Of course a couple folk always ended up getting run through with a sword or two, but accidents happen.
I blame the media here. I can’t excuse, but I can understand, friends and family of the boys lending support despite the repugnant nature of of what they did. But a comment as vile as the one given need not be reported. It’s a sick form of rationalization, because the alternitive (your son is a fiend, for example) is beyond comprehension. Sadly, it will not be the last time the girl is accused of causing her own rape. I can imagine what will be said at the trial.

Naperville is VERY large - over 100,000. Burr Ridge is an ultra swanky burb a couple of town to the east of Naperville. Kind of an upscale enclave S of Hinsdale, which pretty hoity toity in itself. Popular among a certain segment of professional athletes, local celebrities, etc. Not as pricey as the N shore, but just about as expensive as you can get to the S and W of the city. (If you are bored, go to any of the on-line RE listings and see what is listed. I would assume the average to be around 1 million - if not more.)*
The men went to LT - Lyons Township - which serves a number of communities in the area. My nephew goes there. I’ll see if they have any poop, but I doubt it. He is a sophomore, and I think they have different campuses for the 1st 2 and 2d 2 years. The perps may well be of different income levels. For example, one is from Lyons, where there are precious few - if any - mansions.
Among my first thoughts were, “Where were the parents?” This seems to have been quite the bash, drawing kids from several area communities. Tho the rapists all went to the same HS. The victim would not have - being from Naperville.
The victim is passed out half naked in the home til 1 the next afternoon. The paper this a.m. said the parents where the party was held would not say whether or not they were home at the time. Let’s hope not. I mean, I can understand their house is big. But I would hope I would notice a half naked non-family member in my house sooner than 1 p.m.!
I agree - I would like to see them serve some serious jail time, and a healthy civil award for the vic. But just curious - what do you consider an appropriate sentence?

Now it is possible that this could get some traction in a slow news cycle and then STAND BACK! Media circus coming through!
But on the face of it…it’s not worthy of the evening news or the front page of any national newspaper.

It IS possible that media interest was naturally triggered by scheduled court proceedings. I do not know when the men were arrested, or any other chronology. Surely you do not mean to suggest that the news organizations hold a pool of provocative violent crime stories, to whip out for use on slow news days.
Moreover, this is news in the “Oh my god is this really happening in our society” category! Yes, there may be many many rapes in the US. But I have no difficulty seeing a number of exacerbating factors in this case.
I do not watch the local evening news. But this strikes me as a little more newsworthy than the other teaser I saw last night -“IT’S COLD!”

I tend to agree with Dinsdale, the specifics here make it plenty sensational enough for the national news. It’s ‘good’ suburban teens, an underage girl, a videotape, and the added degradation of writing on her.
The community support that you speak of was by race not by location. It’s true rapist don’t have a color, but all too often you find that when the victim is White and the alleged rapist is a person of color, the media coverage amongst other things are different.
I kind of agree, it’s not sensational enough and doesn’t have the button pressing power of say a scenario where the men in question were of color and the woman white. That would have gotten nationwide coverage during the arrest. I’m suprised they were even able to get statements from the teens.

If the boys were YOUR boys, then they’re a pack of filthy animals who deserve to be taken out and shot, or at least sent to adult prison for ten or twenty years to be punished for this hideous, vicious, soulless crime.
If they were MY boys, then they’re good kids, nice kids, kids who didn’t really mean any harm. Things just got out of hand, that’s all. Probation, at best.
By the same token, if the girl involved was MY little girl, then the boys must be taken out and castrated. Immediately. Preferably after torture.
