American Dad S08 E18 "Lost In Space"

I’m a little late seeing this most recent episode of American Dad, but wow I’m so glad I did. Easily one of the best episodes of the show, period, and frankly I think it might even deserve to win an Emmy.

Am I alone in thinking that this episode was one of the best things on TV in recent memory?

And god DAMN that song Majestic is so catchy. I immediately had to go out and download it and I currently have it on repeat.

I’m so glad American Dad has continued to go on and be strong and amazing for 8 years. Not many TV shows manage that.

I really liked Majestic by Wax Fang as well.

Haha well glad I’m not alone! Any other American Dad fans around?

I appreciate American Dad more than I like them (which I do like). That said, I watch the show because there is funny in there but the major draw is for gems like this episode, the golden turd, and other “high concept” ideas that other shows couldn’t pull off. Plus the characters they’ve created are all very fun, unique characters: guys like the principal, Bullock, Stelios Kontos…

Yea, I don’t particularly like the show when they’re just another animated family sit-com, but its great when they do episodes like this that double or triple down on the weirdness.

Yeah weirdness is great on American Dad, more than on any other show I think.

The more I think about it, the more I feel that this show is severely underrated. Almost nobody I know watches this show even semi-regularly. Even on the quirk-fest that is the SDMB it gets a minimum level of love.

A shame…

I loved it. Majestic is definably hard to get out of your head. Finally after 8 yrs we get to see other members of Roger’s species. It’s like the entire species consists of gay men (they’re really hermaphrodites). I was a little surprised that Roger’s real name is Roger; I always assumed it was just something he adopted after he crashed at Roswell.

I watch it religiously, I’ve seen every episode, and I think it really is one of the best cartoons on TV overall. It’s leagues better than Family Guy when it’s at its best. Perhaps never quite as poignant as South Park or witty as Futurama, overall it just has a quality that is hard to beat.

This episode was just frankly one of the best of a very good series. I too was glad to see the rest of Roger’s species finally. And the fact that they were able to take Jeff (a basically one joke character) and make one of the finest episodes out of him and his love for Haley is really quite brilliant.

In my market some stupid NASCAR race pushed all the Fox animated shows ahead like 45 minutes so my TiVo didn’t get American Dad (the last one on after Simpsons, Bob’s Burgers, FG). Waiting for Cartoon Network to rerun it soon…

New episodes are free on Hulu a couple days after they air.

Adult Swim also airs the episode the 2nd Monday at 10:30p after it premieres on Fox.

I have just started this episode. I haven’t watched American Dad in many years. Is this show explicable independently of the series? Is it making some reference to some movie or show or something I don’t recognize? Or something? Because what the hell is going on? What is it that makes the episode seem so awesome to you guys?

Also, having read the thread in more detail now, I have to ask when was South Park ever poignant? I doubt it has ever been poignant, even a single time!

Last season or the season before, Jeff the stoner married Haley, and moved in with the Smith family. They still maintained the fiction that Roger was a distant cousin who just happened to live in the attic, which was helped by the fact that Jeff is a stoner, and not very bright anyway. Earlier this season Jeff found out that Roger is an alien. They realized that there’s no way that Jeff could keep the secret (stoner, not bright), and if the CIA found out that the Smiths had been hiding Roger for years, they’d kill them all horribly (Bulloch from a previous episode: “Bad things. Butt things.”) so Stan decided that either Jeff or Roger had to die. Roger decided that instead, he’d return to his planet, and the ship came to pick him up, but at the last second, Roger shoved Jeff into the transporter beam, because Roger is an asshole. This episode showed what happened next.

That’s the backstory. But it’s an awesome episode just because it’s awesome.

“Sinbad! So this is where you’ve been for the past 15 years!”

“I’ve only been on the ship for two months!”

As the episode progresses I’m understanding better what you guys were getting out of it. You know if I hadn’t seen the raves here I would have switched it off in the first three minutes.

I can’t wait for this thread to stop being bumped. Every time I see it I get “The Majestic” re-stuck in my head.
